Description: The place Malta appears to be mentioned in documents as early as the 10th century. However, the castle was probably not built until the 11th century. It is the ancestral seat of the Mallenteiners, whose Carinthian line did not die out until 1786. The Mallenteiners immigrated from Bavaria around 1000 and became a large, influential family. In 1029, Engelbert Mallentinus is mentioned first. The Mallenteiners were originally ministeriales of the Counts of Lurn.
