Description:
#Ferrata #Lagazuoi #WWI

We are in the Ampezzo Dolomites for the annual ferrata along the Great War paths. Starting from Passo Falzarego we climb the galleries leading to the top of Lagazuoi. Long galleries winding inside the mountain, built both as supply routes and as mine galleries. From Rifugio Lagazuoi we descend towards Forcella Col di Bos to climb the scree under Tofana di Rozes from where the Lipella Ferrata begins. The first part of the ferrata is the so-called Castelletto, a sort of natural fortification. We proceed attached to the cable, sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical, until we reach the Tre Dita plateau with a wide view over Valle di Travenazes. We refuel and overnight at Rifugio Giussani from where the next morning we tackle the last section of Lipella Ferrata. We are at the beginning of September in the classic weekend when summer ends and cold currents from the Atlantic cause heavy rains. Towards late morning the sky clouds over and we finish the ferrata inside the clouds. Tiredness, low visibility and the prospect of rain make us give up the final attack on the summit of Tofana di Rozes. We prefer not to risk it this time and spend the next 4-5 hours descending before getting caught in the rain.
