Description: Of the once mighty Hohenegg Castle in the Dunkelsteinerwald, first mentioned in 1140, only white wall remnants remain today. From 1787, due to the "roof tax," the outer bailey was demolished and later the castle's roof tiles were sold. The uninhabited castle was left to decay. Wind and weather did the rest, and one of Austria's most beautiful castles thus became a ruin.
