The Katzenstein castle ruins, a medieval defensive tower, are hidden in the forest on the German border in the Tyrolean municipality of Erl, known for its passion plays.

The shortest but partly pathless route leads from the 'Heilig Kreuz' church on the German side in about 5-10 minutes via a moat of the former Tyrolean state fortification to the ruins.
