Description:
A wonderful and rewarding hike leads to the ruins of the former fortress Federaun. The castle was built on a western spur of the Graschelitzen on steep rock faces.
The oldest documented mention of Federaun dates from 1311. The castle complex was repeatedly expanded eastward. The result of these extensions is an unusually large facility with two large outer baileys. In the mid-13th century, Rudolf von Ras (from Rosegg in Rosental) conquered the castle and used it as a base for his raids on passing trade convoys to and from Italy.
