Description: Lhotse South Wall – Crossing the Boundaries
Since 1970, the south wall of Lhotse has been the greatest alpinistic challenge in the world. It became the proving ground for the world alpine elite and received ratings: "monster", "problem for the year 2000", "avalanche wall". The Lhotse wall is notorious mainly because of avalanches. Our expedition had only four snow-free days in 64 days. Aleš prepared the ascent of the south wall of Lhotse for almost twenty years. From 1962, when he first saw the Lhotse wall, he studied the possibilities of crossing this unusual wall. He drew a route with three exit variants. Two led to the summit, the third to the edge of the wall. In the direction towards the summit, the expedition reached 8250 m, and via the third planned ascent variant, they reached the edge of the wall (team Franček Knez – Vanja Matijevec). The alpinistic world received this news with enthusiastic ratings – "fantastic, grossartig, incredibile, superato, step across the boundaries of old alpinism…."
