In a document from 1364, Duke Rudolf IV authorized Eberhard von Wallsee to build a castle on the Klausberg and name it Wallsee. Construction began immediately and was completed around 1386. In contrast to the Niederwallsee fortress already built in 1362 on the Lower Austrian Danube, it was soon called Oberwallsee.
