These two majestic forts above the Koritnica gorge are among the most visited cultural sights in the Soča valley. It is an important monument to the attacks during World War I.
Fort Kluže obtained its modern view in the 19th century, while in the 20th century, it played an essential role on the Isonzo Front. Fort Hermann was built to support Fort Kluže between 1897 and 1900 in Austria-Hungary. In comparison with the lower fortress, this was more modern for the time. Their task was to control the Bovec basin and to ensure artillery surveillance. Right at the beginning of the fighting on the Isonzo front in May 1915, the Italian artillery shelled the fortress and later completely destroyed it. Therefore, the Austro-Hungarian soldiers left in May 1916 the Fort Hermann.
