Right next to the Watzmann stands the lesser-known Hochkalter. Its summit offers about 100 m less height than its "big," famous brother. In return, its ascent is somewhat more difficult, and above all, the exposed high-alpine terrain is pristine – fixed ropes like on Watzmann are completely absent at the climbing sections. Anyone embarking on this magnificent mountain tour should have strong nerves, alpine experience, and surefootedness. On the return through the long Ofental, additional fitness is required - but the round is rewarding and the efforts worthwhile.
