The parish and church of St. Nicholas in Bohinjska Bistrica was established in 1788. Previously, it belonged as a branch to the old parish of Srednja vas. Since the old church was too small, they began early to think about building a new one. But only the parish priest Janez Mesar succeeded in carrying out this idea. For many years they collected voluntary contributions for the construction, for a long time prepared stone, bricks and wood. Finally, the joyful day arrived when the foundation stone was solemnly blessed.
