Description: The Anhalt castle ruins, preserved only in a few remnants, are among the most important medieval castle complexes, as they count among the three ancestral castles of the German high nobility of the Askanier. Built in 1123 by Ott the Rich, the castle was destroyed just a few years later in a war between the Welfs and Askanier. But shortly afterwards, Adalbert III, better known as Albert the Bear, rebuilt the castle, which then became the seat of a line of the old noble family until it was moved to nearby Harzgerode.
