Description: © CLAUDIO MORTINI™◊ The castle, in the municipality of Corciano PG, rises on a rocky hill and together with its village is a typical highland settlement born for defensive and health needs. It is located between the two roads that from Perugia lead one to Cortona and the other to Città della Pieve, and between the Caina and Genna streams. Area inhabited since antiquity as attested by some finds related to a bronze Etruscan chariot (6th century BC) and a large sepulchral area (2nd-1st century BC). Excavations conducted in the last decade in the Strozzacapponi area have yielded about 60 chamber tombs made in the local travertine bank. In the Middle Ages, it changed its name to Castel San Mariano.
