Vrtovnik is 403 meter high peak. The peak is located 5 km east-northeast of peak Črni vrh. The nearest mountain hut is Planinska koča pri Sv. Ani na Mali gori, located 10km west-northwest. A bit closer is Kocljevi, which is located 4km to the north. Southwest of the summit is the valley Ribniška dolina.
