Old-fashioned owners think a dog belongs on a chain, or what? If it has trained recall, I see no reason why the dog should be on a leash during a walk in nature. The bigger problem than the dogs themselves are uneducated and irresponsible people. Such people usually have uneducated dogs too, and they don't belong anywhere, not just in the hills. The fact is that hiking is very popular now and there are more and more people in the hills. Also because of that, the level of behavior culture has dropped, and that cordiality we hikers cultivated towards "fellow sufferers" in other times is no longer noticeable. Human competitiveness, fueled by mountaineering exhibitionism, is increasingly expressed. I see a much bigger threat to the mountain habitat in that than in a dog expressing its hunting instinct with a few steps towards a herd of roe deer, provided it stops on its owner's command, of course. The mindset that dogs don't belong in the hills no longer holds water. Just peek over the northern border, and we'll quickly find plenty of mountain huts that are dog-friendly. We should think in that direction here too, and encourage caretakers to make their huts dog-friendly. If that happens someday, my Bello (more likely one of her successors) and I could go on multi-day trips in our mountains, not just limited to day hikes.

Vizslas adore water and swimming.

Vizslas are super companions for the hills, bitches are so attached to their owners that there's no fear they'll run off after game. My Bello and I have been intensively hiking mostly Slovenian hill country (also high mountains) for four years and we're having a fantastic time. Once a vizsla, always a vizsla!
