Regarding equipment intended for greater safety in the mountains, and even in some other areas, the note I read above, i.e. don't buy stuff with made in china labels, needs a bit of adjustment. Although "Chinese goods" is synonymous with proven poor or at least suspicious quality stuff, the fact is that lots of things, including mountain safety gear, are produced right there. So you can find that label on gear from renowned brands. Camp helmets, via ferrata sets, carabiners, quickdraws are all made in China, Black Diamond quickdraws, metulji... likewise. Mammut harnesses in Vietnam. For clothing the list of actual production sites would be far larger. Taiwan, Madagascar, India... Globalization has run us over. And why would a carabiner made in China, from material figured out in Europe, where the design comes from too and (at least occasional) checks, and tested by UIAA and has CE cert, be any worse than one made in Italy?
