Astein is 1419 meter high peak and is part of the Upper Austrian Prealps. The peak is located 6 km east from the center of Rosenau am Hengstpaß and 10 km east from the center of Edlbach. The nearest mountain hut is Hengstpasshütte, located 2km south-southwest. A little further is bivouac Jagdhütte. The peak is located west of the valley Frenzgraben.
