Snow conditions 14. 2. 2026

14.02.2026
Avalanche forecast
Saturday, 14. 2. 2026

Avalanche danger level Saturday, 14. 2. 2026

Avalanche danger level 3 – considerable

Južne Julijske Alpe, Osrednje Julijske Alpe, Vzhodne Julijske Alpe, Zahodne Julijske Alpe

New and wind-drifted snow in high mountain areas, weak layers persist.
Even with small additional load, small slab avalanches can be triggered on wind-drifted snow drifts. A triggered slab avalanche or large additional load can exceed the strength of deep persistent weak layers, triggering a deep and extensive (large) slab avalanche. There are many such weak layers especially on shaded slopes above the forest, but they are not excluded elsewhere. Loose snow avalanches also occur on steep smooth slopes.

Snowpack
Danger patterns
dp.1: deep persistent weak layer
dp.4: cooling after warmth / warming after cold
In recent days, snow on sunny slopes became wet up to the highest peaks, a crust formed upon cooling. Snow remained dry only on shaded slopes in high mountains. On this base, from Tuesday afternoon, up to 10 cm of new snow fell, in Južne Julijske Alpe up to 30 cm. The freezing level was mostly around 1300 m, towards the end of precipitation it rose to 1700 m. The snowpack surface is wet due to rain up to around 1700 m, a crust formed upon cooling, which in places supports a skier's weight, elsewhere not.
The old snowpack consists of layers of somewhat settled snow, mostly well bonded together. Bonding is poorer in wind-drifted snow layers in drifts formed by south wind during snowfall. In the old snowpack, deep below the surface, there are several weak layers of depth hoar and faceted grains.

Weather
In the night to Saturday, clouds will cover everywhere, Saturday cloudy and foggy with light precipitation, south wind. Snow above approx. 1500 m. Up to 10 cm of snow.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will slightly increase with new precipitation and stronger wind after precipitation ends, especially near ridges. In the night to Sunday, northeast wind will start, morning clearing from northwest. Sunday sunny and colder, freezing level around 1000 m, at 1500 m about -4 °C, at 2000 m about -8 °C.

Avalanche danger level Saturday, 14. 2. 2026

Avalanche danger level 2 – moderate

Južno predgorje Julijskih Alp, Vzhodno predgorje Julijskih Alp, Javorniki in Snežnik

Wind-drifted snow, loose snow avalanches.
Even with small additional load, small slab avalanches can be triggered on wind-drifted snow drifts. Loose snow avalanches also occur on steep smooth slopes.

Snowpack
Above 1200 m, up to 30 cm of new snow fell. New snow fell on crusty base. The old snowpack consists of layers of somewhat settled snow, mostly well bonded together. Depth hoar formed at the snowpack-ground interface.

Weather
In the night to Saturday, clouds will cover everywhere, Saturday cloudy and foggy with light precipitation, south wind. Snow above approx. 1500 m. Up to 15 cm of snow.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will slightly increase with new precipitation and stronger wind after precipitation ends, especially near ridges. In the night to Sunday, northeast wind will start, morning clearing from northwest. Sunday sunny and colder, freezing level below 1000 m, at 1500 m about -6 °C, at 2000 m about -10 °C.
