Julius Kugy was born on July 19, 1858, in Gorizia; he attended high school in Trieste and studied law in Vienna.
He spoke Slovenian, Italian, and German fluently, and in his free time he engaged in music, writing, and mountaineering. By profession, he was a merchant.
In Slovenia, he is known primarily as a great lover and expert of mountains. In Trenta (along the Vršič road), a monument was erected in his memory by the Alpine Association of Slovenia. In addition to his love for mountains, especially the Julian Alps, he also studied alpine flora.
