Works on the mountain trail to Slemeno Špica and closure of the Vršič road.
On Slemeno Špica, a popular destination for hikers and tourists, works are underway that will provide visitors with a safer path and better living conditions for the special vegetation thriving in this area. Additionally, from October 15, on weekdays between 7:30 and 17:00, there is a complete closure of the Vršič road due to road reconstruction and arrangement of parking lots. During the complete closure, access to Erjavčeva Koča, Koča na Gozdu, and Mihov Dom is permitted from the Kranjska Gora side.
In the autumn season, hikes among the golden larch trees are very popular, including the mountain trail to Slemeno Špica. Therefore, the Public Institute Triglav National Park provides detailed information about the works on the trail to Slemeno Špica. As they explain, this mountain destination is extremely popular not only among hikers but also among tourists who combine a visit to Vršič with a short hike: "Mass visits naturally also bring negative impacts on nature. Numerous shortcuts and erosion gullies have appeared, which have widened and deepened significantly over the years. In recent years, erosion has been accelerated by abundant and intense short-term downpours. The original path has thus become almost unnoticeable, and hikers have chosen various small paths. In addition to destroying the vegetation (a European-important grassland with wolf's-bane on acidic soil), which is something special there, the path has become dangerous and slippery, especially for less experienced hikers. We have been aware for some time that this path needs rehabilitation, but it requires significant funds. These are provided for this renovation within the Life for Seeds project - Conservation of priority meadow habitat types in Slovenia by establishing a seed bank and in situ restoration. One of the project partners, led by the Slovenian Ornithological Society (DOPPS - BirdLife Slovenia), is also the Public Institute Triglav National Park."
As stated in their press release, the rehabilitation includes overlaying the path to the top and abandoning the section of the path that was most affected by erosion. Currently, path reinforcement, drainage arrangement, and covering of erosion hotspots with sod are underway. Over the next two years, they will grass over the abandoned section of the path, tackle the lower sections, and ensure that visiting Slemeno Špica is a beautiful and safe experience. "We thank all visitors for their patience and adherence to the signs on the ground. We appeal to future visitors to Slemeno Špica to do the same. Every step counts!" they add.
The Municipality of Kranjska Gora announces that from October 15, 2024, on working days between 7:30 and 17:00, there is a complete closure of the Vršič road due to road reconstruction and parking lot arrangement. During the complete closure, a detour for all vehicles is possible via Kranjska Gora-Rateče-Italy-Predel-Bovec. They thank for understanding.
During the complete closure, access to Erjavčeva Koča, Koča na Gozdu, and Mihov Dom is permitted from the Kranjska Gora side. Access to the otherwise already closed Tičarjev Dom and Poštarski Dom is permitted from the Bovec side or via the detour over Predel during the complete closure.
