Ainos (Kefalonia)

Description of mountain:
Ainos (Gr. Αίνος) is, at 1628 meters, the highest mountain on the island of Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea, Greece. Being located on an island, it automatically fulfills all the necessary conditions to be included on the list of ultra peaks (i.e., a required drop of at least 1500 meters to any next higher peak).

On a fine day, the view encompasses the surrounding islands, Zakynthos to the south and Ithaca, Lefkada, Meganisi to the north, as well as mainland Greece to the east.

The summit area of the mountain falls within a national park.

Particularly the northern slopes of Mount Ainos are covered with the Kefalonian or Greek fir, which has very high-quality wood that was used for shipbuilding from ancient Greece, the Romans to the Venetians (Gr. Abies cephalonica). (Source: Archaeological Museum in Sami, June 2023).
