Access to starting point:
We leave the Štajerska highway at the Žalec exit, and then we follow the signs for Žalec. Through Žalec we follow the signs for Griže and Migojnice, which we reach soon after the bridge over the Savinja river, and then we follow the signs for Zabukovica, where the described path begins near the Sipex d.o.o. company. We park at a suitable place nearby.
Route description:
From the starting point, we continue on the road ahead, which quickly leads us to a small crossroad, where we proceed straight on the road, alongside which there are traffic signs indicating that driving is not allowed for vehicles heavier than four tons (to the right are signs for Gozdnik and the hostages' graveyard). Further on, we encounter a few more small crossroads, where we continue straight or follow the sparse blazes. Higher up, at the cross, we reach a small saddle and a partially marked junction, where we choose the right road, along which the sparse blazes continue (to the left is Bukovica).
The path ahead leads us along an asphalt road, where there are a few more parking options, and the road transitions into a forest through which we then mostly ascend moderately. At the road sign 6.0 km, we choose the upper left road and begin to ascend a bit more steeply; higher up, we pass by individual homesteads, and upon reaching the saddle at the farm Zgornji Beškovnik, we continue left from the marked crossroad in the direction of Kotečnik (straight to Šmohor, right to Gozdnik).
The path ahead takes us past a house, and behind the house, it continues for some time on a cart track, which later turns into a moderately ascending footpath. The path, which continues along and beside the western ridge of Kotečnik, soon brings us to the western secondary peak of Kotečnik, where the first inscription box is located and from where a beautiful view opens up.
A gentle descent follows, and then we gradually begin to ascend, passing through some indistinct secondary peaks and mostly through the forest, until we reach the second inscription box, located on the main, forest-covered summit.

Discussion about the trip Zabukovica - Kotečnik
baro27. 08. 2009
This description of access from Zabukovica is completely wrong, or rather not precise enough. I followed it and kept getting lost. Asked locals, but no one knows anything, so in the end I got to Liboj and parked at some tourist farm. There, nothing is marked for the hiking path, only for climbing walls, let alone any markings, not even by chance. When you ask a local, everyone tells you half the story. In short, I wandered through the forest until I reached the climbing walls, went back and really barely found the path to the hayrack, which is also in the upper pictures.

Therefore, I would give a lot of criticism here to the markers, I think PD Liboj, who have this path, because there would probably be no problem to add signs for the hiking path under the board for climbing walls and markings on trees. Once you find it, it's no problem at all and not far, but it really is a real maze of paths in the forest and without markings it's really hard to find your way.

To Kotečnik there is only one marked trail, namely the one described above. From your description it's clear to me that you went to Kotečnik past the climbing area. The path to the climbing area was "marked" by climbers and has nothing to do with Knafeljc's markings at all. I won't even mention the aesthetics of such marking. As a marker of PD Liboje, I can assure you that the trail is excellently marked, of course provided you find the right starting point. LP

I was also there, I think last November at Kotečnik. The trail is well marked. I only went to the first logbook box where the Savinja trail stamp is, but I didn't know there's another summit ahead with a box. What stamp is there?
garmont19. 04. 2011
A stamp "Kotečnik 772m" is attached to the pillar.
The first box belongs to PD Zabukovica, the second to PD Liboje.

The path from the first to the second logbook box is newly marked. LP

We were at Kotečnik yesterday (13.8.2013)... The path is very beautiful and excellently marked.

I was there yesterday, the path is well marked. Interesting, very easy path, with little ascent, most of it runs along the ridge, on the south side vertical cliffs. Very uncrowded, we watched a tawny owl for a while. Need to watch smaller children so they don't fall into the abyss. But it makes sense to park higher up, maybe they allow it at that house where the path turns.

Is the path from the eastern side to the summit also marked - from Liboj?
garmont22. 12. 2018
No.

In Austria, at most starting points for tours there is a clearly visible starting sign with the beginning of the path, which is often not the case with us. If I set off off-trail I prepared beforehand and knew where I would start, but if I went on a marked path I was lazy and didn't check it beforehand, I had trouble especially on lower paths where to start.
The unmarked path to Kotečnik from the Liboje side is possible right of the climbing area by the quarry to the ridge or under the climbing area further and left of it up the steep gully to the top.
And also: Kotečnik is the only peak in Slovenia with two stamps, because two PDs want to have their own peak each, and the Zabukovški one is even a meter lower. Lp

As every winter, today I went to the beautiful Kotečnik. The path is excellently marked. True, when I first came, I copied the description photos beforehand to find the starting point more easily! Shame that the path from the 2nd logbook box onwards is not marked... it kind of invites you..... Maybe an idea for PD Liboje? nasmeh

We postponed the originally planned tour in Smrekovško pogorje due to cloudy and windy weather for about a week and instead headed to the hills above Zabukovica. We chose Kotečnik because it's one of the few peaks in this area where I haven't been yet. The path is very well marked, but in places slightly overgrown (like probably many in Slovenia at this time when path markers weren't allowed to maintain the paths). We ended at the hut on Brnica and treated ourselves to strudel.

Is it possible to reach the pass between Gozdnik and Kotečnik by car, from Liboj?
panoramik4. 01. 2025 16:52:53
Yes, parking is a bit tricky.
