Tugliezzo - Lopič / Monte Plauris (CAI 701)

Access to starting point:
From central Slovenia on the Gorenjska motorway to the Hrušica exit, and from there through the Upper Sava Valley past Rateče to Trbiž / Tarvisio. In the western part of Trbiž we continue on the main road SS13 towards Udine through the Kanalska Valley and the Bela Valley to the settlement Karnija / Carnia (259 m), where we leave the road SS13 and at the crossroads in the settlement we turn right. On the local road below the viaduct we continue to the next crossroads. Left goes towards the cemetery, but we drive straight, first past the former barracks Marussig on the right, and from there uphill in a few hairpin turns to the former mountain pasture, now hamlet Tugliezzo (503 m) with holiday cottages and a chapel.

Route description:
Past the chapel we go another 10 meters or so to the turn-off of the forest road on the right and along it to the nearby crossroads. The main branch, closed with a barrier, winds all the way to the Elio Franz shelter, but we continue on the left branch past the nearby hay meadow and holiday house on Planu dei Portolans, where the road turns into a path. Along it we go into the forest somewhat above the gully of the Rio Lavarie stream to the Elio Franz shelter. From there we ascend somewhat more steeply, first through beech forest, which higher up is replaced by scrub. Besides the steepness, the ascent is made more difficult by the heavily eroded path in countless zigzags, but with ever more beautiful views of the Carnic peaks we soon reach the Maleet pass (1625 m).
From the Maleet pass we descend a few meters to the junction with path CAI 728a past the Bellina shelter. From there we go straight on a narrow path traversing above the head of the small valley through dwarf pines, past boulders and across scree to the foot of the summit part of Lopič. The blazes direct us right. The path ascends traversing across scree and in zigzags to the ridge. Past the indistinct ridge notch we turn left to the south side and along a faint path to the panoramic summit.
