Access to starting point:
a) Leave the Gorenjska motorway at the Hrušica exit and continue following the road towards Kranjska Gora. Just before the village of Dovje, a road branches off to the left from the main road leading to Mojstrana (Vrata, Kot and Krma). Continue following the road towards the village of Radovna and the Krma and Kot valleys. The fairly steep road then takes us past the TNP sign, after which the road soon flattens and brings us to a junction where a gravel road branches off to the right into the Kot valley. Continue straight ahead on the road, which begins to descend. In the middle of the descent, a road branches off to the right into the Krma valley (straight ahead Radovna). A little further on, we reach the next junction, where we continue right towards Krma. The gravel road then brings us to the Kovinarska koča, which we continue to follow. The occasionally somewhat rougher road then takes us to the parking lot before the barrier.
b) Drive to Kranjska Gora, then continue driving towards Jesenice. At Dovje, leave the main road and continue right towards Mojstrana and the Vrata, Kot and Krma valleys, following the signs for Krma at the subsequent junctions.
Route description:
From the last parking lot in the Krma Valley, called Pri lesi, we continue along the poorer road that continues up the valley and soon brings us to a clearing, where we bypass the nearby building on the left side. We continue along the gravel path, which approaches a torrent and crosses it a little further on. On the other side of the torrent, the path enters the forest and initially ascends gently, then quite steeply for some time. Higher up, we leave the forest and enter the belt of dwarf pines and shrubs, from where the path offers beautiful views of the nearby rock faces of the peaks, which descend more gently towards Pokljuka on the other side.
Higher up, at an altitude of just over 1400 m, the path temporarily flattens and brings us to the beautiful grassy plain of Vrtača.
After the grassy section, the path begins to ascend again along a path that is often quite slippery in this section, flattening out on the Malo polje plain.
Here the path turns right and forks.
To the left, the path branches off towards Bohinjska vrata and Vodnikov dom on Velem polju, while we continue straight ahead and easily proceed along the foot of Vernar to the spring with a trough.
After the trough, the path forks again, but we continue straight along the marked path (left unmarked shortcut to Planina Zgornja Krma). This is followed by some moderate ascent, higher up somewhat steeper, through sparse, partly larch forest. Higher up, the path turns left and flattens, joined from the left by the aforementioned shortcut.
After the junction of both paths, we quickly reach the shepherd's hut on Planina Zgornja Krma, called Prgarca.
From here, the path continues with a moderate ascent towards the west and brings us to the last spring along the path; above the spring, the path forks again.
To the left, the path continues over Kurica to Konjsko sedlo and further to Dom Planika pod Triglavom, while we go right onto the path leading further towards Kredarica and Staničev dom.
Just a few steps further, the "old path" to Kredarica branches off to the left from the usual path to Kredarica.
Here are the only signs for Kredarica in this direction along the path, but we continue straight along the gentle marked path, which has no signs for Kredarica (September 2025), bringing us a few minutes later to a marked junction where the paths to Kredarica and Staničev dom separate.
Here we go left towards Triglavski dom na Kredarici and Triglav (straight ahead Dom Valentina Staniča) and first ascend steeply above the Murava plain, then gradually arrive in the torrent valley called Ulice.
A little further on, at Vrh Ulic, the aforementioned quite steep "old path" joins us from the left; another minute further, a path branches slightly left from the path to Kredarica, leading towards Konjsko sedlo (this is a longer variant that avoids the steep ascent over Kurica), while we continue slightly right along the better-trodden path.
The path ahead ascends moderately for a short time, mostly towards the northwest, i.e., towards the rock faces of Vrh Snežne konte.
In this section, we cross the path Konjsko sedlo - Dom Valentina Staniča, continuing straight and entering the steep scree slopes of Kalvarija. Here we ascend steeply in a few switchbacks along increasingly panoramic slopes.
When the path higher up temporarily flattens somewhat, we join the path from Pokljuka, which leads past Vodnikov dom on Velem polju and over Konjsko sedlo, but we continue slightly right towards Kredarica and Triglav. A few minutes further, when the path flattens even more, a path branches left past Snežne konte and over Štapce towards Dom Planika pod Triglavom, while we continue right, first quite gently, then ascending to the ridge above Vrh Snežne konte, the peak we saw from below upwards during the ascent over Kalvarija.
Here the path becomes steeper again, and we follow it all the way to Triglavski dom na Kredarici.
Krma - Zgornja Krma 2:30, Zgornja Krma - Triglavski dom na Kredarici 2:30.
The description refers to the conditions in September 2025, while the photos are from various periods.

I'm very interested in what the path from Krma to Kredarica is like, do we need crampons and an ice axe? Thanks in advance for the info.

Yesterday I went to Pršivec above Krma. The path towards Kredarica is very well trodden. On the path to Pršivec there was frozen snow in a few places, but crampons and ice axe were not needed.

I wonder if anyone can tell me if there are fixed ropes and pegs on the Krma-Kredarica path.........I'm afraid of heights

On the mentioned path there are no safety features, as they are not needed. Some have already gone by bike.

I'm a more "young50+" hiker. With a friend we would go to Kredarica next weekend, I'm curious how much snow is on the trail. We would start from Krma. Thanks for the kind replies.

So we went with a team for the weekend to Kredarica, from the currently only trampled and safe path - Krma, practically on snowmobiles a bit out of the village, so it was long and strenuous to the top, only Stelvio made it to Kredarica on snowmobile, Jemček turned back earlier, I persisted as long as possible on snowmobile, from about 2 hours onwards on foot, the weather was quite unpleasant, quite foggy-windy.... We really struggled up with the last atoms of strength. Thanks to Stelvio and Jemček for support.. But today it was completely the opposite, only windy and sunny, to Pastirci at about 1700m about 30-50cm of harmless fresh snow and very little compacted, so we were the first to feel what that means, easily zigzagging everywhere, lower we crossed avalanche areas and lower to the village we snowmobiled... down in less than 2h... Today quite some folks were heading up... btw a colleague alpinist climbed Triglav today, meaning with snowmobiles on the glacier and direct to the top, 2 machines and crampons... same down, says the snow was right...

I'm wondering if there's any spring along this path to refill water and if helmets are needed to Kredarica. We're planning to go up in the next few days.

| andrejjerina24. 08. 2009 |
Below and above Prgarca there are some livestock troughs, clean and healthy water flows in them from under Kurica, so yes,.. but take a helmet to Kredarica too, you'll probably climb Triglav as well. Best, Andrej

We had a beautiful day. The path drags on a bit. I have only one remark about the markings. At the junction below Kalvarija there is no signpost for Kredarica (right) and Konjsko sedlo (left). So we were a bit puzzled. Otherwise it was an excellent experience LP

What's the trail like these days towards Kredarica. We'd like to go from Krma next weekend, if the weather is favorable. We're moderate hikers, not afraid of long trails, sometimes just the pegs and cables bother us a bit, that's why we chose this trail. We hope there isn't too much snow yet. Thanks for the kind replies.

Unfortunately I didn't manage to go to the mountains today, but I predict the coming week will have plenty of sun and it will also be warm for this time. As for snow, I think with good footwear on this trail there's no need to worry. Even if it freezes, there's so little snow now that there will still be plenty of rocks on the terrain to ascend on.

Yesterday we were above Pokljuka, went from Rudno polje under Viševnik to Debeli vrh. Weather wonderful. Looking towards Triglav the snow line was clearly visible, starting somewhere below Kalvarija. If the weather stays like this you can do the tour.

Something's bugging me today. I've already tried to write a comment three times.... First, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, we'll postpone the trip to next year (if we're still alive), some are a bit scared of the long path in one day, they wouldn't manage it. Others got scared of the supposedly very annoying section with pitons and slings around Kalvarija. I haven't walked this path myself yet and don't know if it's true or not. Shame, because hopefully nice weather. Čemšenican, we'd gladly take you with us. We'll pull your sleeve some other time. Greetings to all.

There are no cables or pitons on the Krma - Kredarica path. But it's a bit funny to me that reina first states it's for moderate hikers who don't fear long paths, then suddenly realizes they aren't anymore. The Krma path from the "garages" to Kredarica and back is a half-day trip.

Today I was on this path to Kredarica, 4 hours walk. A little snow on the path, no pitons or cables, the path is easy. At the top a sunny beach - really unique, you'll regret it if you don't go. L.P.Mar

Thanks again for the info from experienced ones. That there are pegs and cables, one of the hikers brought from somewhere. Three from the group say they are not afraid of long paths, based on the time mentioned on these pages (5h) they figured they won't have enough daylight. At this moment the day is over ten hours long. Personally I'm not worried, but taking care of at least three people I've never hiked with..... scares me a bit. Especially nuska49 spurred me to maybe go, of course with a colleague I've already hiked with. I'll report. Best regards reina

I must add the "triglavski" comment. I wouldn't agree it's funny. I think there's a difference between a long flat path or a long path with 1500m elevation gain. If people don't have enough fitness, it's damn hard to "catch breath" on the slope, which results in more breaks and thus longer time. I still remember well how I struggled myself and many times wondered why I was doing this . I must say also that these people are not exactly climbers, they haven't tackled pegs or cables yet and I believe fear is present. Descent worries them even more. Everyone knows best for themselves how much they are capable of and what they are capable of. Slowly you get far.

With Čemšenican I'm going tomorrow morning. Start around 4:30 am from the parking lot, so there will be enough time. No pegs and cables on the path to Kredarica or rather they are not needed at all! Good luck

| triglavski30. 10. 2009 |
reina I apologize, of course it's not funny, it's sad and worrying, you say you'd be responsible for three people (I assume you're playing some kind of guide) with whom you haven't even hiked, and you'd lead them on a path that you don't even know yourself or have never hiked. Why would they be afraid of cables and pegs, since there are none on this path, as others have already written, and climbing experience isn't needed anyway to walk from Krma to Kredarica, I'm increasingly feeling that the problem is in you, not with others.

Reina, I was first time at Kredarica and alone. I expected it to be strenuous but I was really surprised because the path is really easy and undemanding. At the top, regular visitors told me that it's gorgeous up there in winter, on a nice sunny day it's warmer than in the valley. I'll check it.....go up with your friend and you won't regret it. Good luck

Reina, I can't agree more with triglavski. Your planned "climbing" from Krma to Kredarica, and you'll have three more under your care ... better postpone to next year, there are plenty of other lower peaks, even in the Julians, lots. Hiking is really wonderful, but you need a bit of experience and some common sense too. And lots of enjoyment!

Well, after a somewhat tiring day, I'll respond: triglavski, nuska49 and js.... An hour ago I got home, was "only" in Luknja . As if that's some feat, right?! I'm not a guide at all. Should I ask triglavski/her, do I need an experienced guide for every trail? We have so many nice spots we've all gone to for the first time. There are hribi.net, acquaintances who've hiked much more than me, for now I still have my very much alive mom who today went to Vodnikova koča, I always inform myself well, watch the markers, start on time.... in short, I'm careful. Nowhere did I say I want to lead a group of inexperienced people, I just asked experienced ones. If that's a problem in me, let it stay. I'll continue happily going to the mountains. Nuska49, as you see I didn't follow your recommendation, since I know triglav.... might comment again that the problem is in me, but my friend really likes hiking with me, but sadly admitted she doesn't dare hike 8 to 10 hours. Especially the descent bothers her, she's extremely slow, her knees also bother her a bit. But we'll definitely go next year. And you dared alone, didn't you read what triglav.... wrote? ? Js, thanks. In two years I've done quite a few nice tours, even "strolled" to Grintovec. I'm not 25 years old to jump paths like a chamois. Since I know I'm still inexperienced, and even Humar was rescued by helicopter, hahaha, I'd rather be more careful and choose paths I'm able to hike with my cross. When I arrange with acquaintances to go on a tour together and if I'm accidentally the initiator where to go, I know the responsibility is on me. That's all I had to say. I'm concluding this debate and wish everyone lots of enjoyment in the mountains. For me today was great.

Reina, I won't defend anyone in this conversation, but from my own experience, triglavski's rescuer's opinion is spot on regarding leading groups and such. Everything goes well in the mountains if everything is fine. But when extraordinary conditions arise, the picture changes considerably even for experts and experienced ones, let alone if we have less knowledgeable people behind us in the mountains. In the future, I wish safe and prudent hiking to all of us in the mountains! Lp

Apparently it was really a tiring day, unfortunately from this entry I can't figure out where reina was, I don't know the mountain "In Luknja"), nor what she wanted to ask, in short, it would have been best if she hadn't written anything, since she said nothing anyway.

Now there's already so much polemic around this, that if we hadn't written anything about this path, and I don't even know where this Lukna is myself, yes there are many in Slovenia, let's leave it and rather go to the mountains. Good luck and best regards

Today, as I read this again, I just can't help but respond to Reinas stupid, insolent writing, where do you have your head, sit down, rest and think about what you wrote, that Humar was rescued by helicopter and you hypocritically laugh, do you think something like that can't happen to you, then you won't write hahaha. Triglavski, you write something to her too, I can't anymore, because I can't believe that people like this Reina exist, and they play guides, would you laugh at your group too if someone got injured, instead of helping. Best regards to all, you reina better stay down there. Good luck.

Is it really necessary to argue everywhere? I understand you want to tell Reina that leading people into the mountains is no joke, because that way you take on a lot of responsibility! And if you're not even sure of yourself, it can be very dangerous. But you can tell people this in a more patient and calmer way too. Only then will we achieve our goal, accusations achieve the opposite.

I like reading how everyone experiences the hiked path differently from the base to the summit and it's really interesting, when I remember these paths, by what they impressed themselves in my memory. On these pages there should be no anger, competition and quarrels, let there be patience and perseverance which is a virtue of almost all true mountaineers. There are enough websites for those who like to argue and insult. To all mountaineers and hikers who publish their observations from their mountain hikes, just this, that I like reading and looking at nice photos that give me will and inspiration for my wanderings in our beautiful mountains. l.p.Marjan

Sometimes someone could skillfully avoid various opinions, even mockery, if they didn't publicly expose themselves with "strange" questions, took a hiking guide in hand, read about it, got nicely informed, went on the path and then described something nice.
|
|
|
|
| damijanp1. 11. 2009 |
What is "strange" and what is not depends on each individual and their experiences. Someone trying to get basic information might indeed sometimes "shoot a blunder", but at least they asked. An old Chinese proverb says: "He who asks is a fool for five minutes, he who doesn't ask is a fool for life." I myself have obtained many very useful pieces of information right on this forum, sometimes even higher quality and more detailed than in guidebooks. Reading descriptions of your trips is also a great pleasure for me, as they are a source of ideas and information, and on the other hand, they nicely brighten up a day when it's not possible to go to the mountains. P.S.: Triglavski, thanks for the excellent path descriptions. If someone asks something strange, don't get too angry, but pass on some of your rich experiences to him/her. This way you can also protect people from accidents.
|
|
|
|
| triglavski2. 11. 2009 |
I'm not angry, just trying to help and those who follow regularly know they'll get an answer if I know of course, but I know very little. Basic and fully sufficient info is obtained from hiking guidebooks and maps, internet can of course be excellent help, or misleading. What was completely easy for someone can be an unsolvable problem for another. Would they look at me strangely if I asked on the forum for every new path!?
|
|
|
|
| heinz2. 11. 2009 |
Let me just add a bit to the last few comments. -Paths on the Hribi.net website are generally (according to my experiences so far), well / excellently described. So, the basic description is usually close, or even fully consistent with reality, almost regardless of the reader's experience. They can, after a few trips, grasp what was meant by a certain description detail.. (Everyone must gather some own experiences.) The descriptions are thus almost never misleading,.. even though published on the internet. For inexperienced, mountain-hungry people, unfortunately a hiking guide can (at the end or even too late) seem like a means of misleading, as e.g. in descriptions of easy climbing paths, they don't mention that the difficulty rating applies only to experienced hikers or mountaineers.. Meanwhile, on internet forums (if a discussion involves a wider range of hikers), an impartial reader can sharpen a certain thing much more precisely, or more easily sum up the final result.. If someone (e.g. due to self-praise) exaggerates in their description, which could be dangerous for others, usually other forum readers quickly react and shut it down. That's how it should be! Although the so-called "voice of the people" is not reliable in many cases, in the case of such internet forums it can appear in a very good light. The forum must be lively, diverse and substantiated; then it can certainly be most useful. Good luck, heinz!

I agree with Heinz's opinion and add that based on my experiences of recent years I can in some cases trust the descriptions and comments on hribi.net even more than the "official" hiking guidebooks and maps. Why? I think because hiking guidebooks get new (updated, corrected) editions only every few (quite a few) years, while conditions can change from season to season. Moreover, the pictorial representation (hribi.net) can be an excellent complement to the textual one, which is not in the guidebooks. As for our hiking maps, of course they are a basis and necessary aid, but fully believing and trusting them is not appropriate either. On some we find unmarked paths marked as marked trails; on others the opposite; we even find some hut on them that hasn't been there for years (even though the map was issued after that). In short, I've been hiking for quite a few decades, so I've gathered some experience, I've always been accompanied by (latest) editions of hiking guidebooks and maps, yet I'm still very glad that hribi.net exists!
|
|
|
|
| triglavski2. 11. 2009 |
Of course I'm not saying that some descriptions on the internet aren't good, even excellent, but what when some can't even read them, proofs are just a few posts above. Of course hribi.net isn't the only one, for me for the Karnic Alps in Italy it's almost useless, so you need to look elsewhere, but if you stick to home mountains I think there's no need to criticize e.g. Mihelič's J.A. even though it's known he wasn't everywhere or Mašer's Z.J.A. And finally, if you have to turn back somewhere because it's not written on the internet or if you don't find the path continuation in the first minute, the world will collapse because of that!
|
|
|
|
| heinz2. 11. 2009 |
triglavski, you yourself are the best proof of how useful the internet can be for all of us, with much less experience than you have. I can almost directly contact you day by day, ask you about this and that, present you with my (modest or whatever) experiences and learn from you - a person who is almost always present in the mountains, what is worth doing and what not. Conditions, equipment, knowledge, etc., etc.. You'll tell everything, -for free, because you're willing to do it, because you realize life has no price, because you love nature and people,- us who love to admire it and enjoy it similarly to you. And also, even or when I don't ask you directly, I indirectly learn from you this and more, which possibly (certainly) I would never find in any book. With respect, thank you! heinz

|
|
|
| damijanp2. 11. 2009 |
Heinz, I fully agree with you. That's exactly why I think it's a shame if this very welcome and useful exchange of information wouldn't continue. In this way we all gain - those who are less in the mountains (I myself have fewer opportunities for that, because I have to drive at least an hour and a half to the nearest high mountains, to the Julians at least two hours), get excellent information, those who provide it get inner satisfaction from having helped someone.

I also agree with the predecessors, Triglavski your information and advice are worth their weight in gold THANK YOU

|
|
|
| Gorazd G3. 11. 2009 |
Triglavski is of course the king, there's no doubt about that and we all learn a lot of useful information from him, but I think that nevertheless one must read basic knowledge about mountaineering in guidebooks, view the areas on maps, attend courses on safe movement in the mountains and thus progress gradually. One thing is questions about current conditions, another for example: "Can someone tell me how to get from Kriških podov to Zasavske koče na Prehodavcih?" Or: "I would like to do a tour from Koče pri Savici to Krnskega jezera, but I don't know what's in between? Can someone tell me where to go?" From memory I cited two questions from this website (there are of course plenty more examples), which speak of complete ignorance of the area. Therefore once again: the internet is only a supplement to all other information about the mountain world, by no means the only, all-knowing and salvific source. That's what I think and it will be very hard for anyone to convince me to start thinking differently.

The last warning, despite the appearance of beginner questions on this and similar forums, can benefit someone and not the opposite, of course if it is only heeded. The greater the awareness, the better and more certain the progress. Of course, we primarily need practice, in which we can only test details from theory. The good side of internet forums is, as said also in this, that so-called "stupid" statements (or questions) can be suppressed, or appropriately responded to. But to tell the truth, it also holds that the internet is increasingly replacing bookstores and libraries.. For now not completely, but in a few years everything will be different.

When reading some comments, one gets a bit surprised, I don't even dare to ask questions. Some will just "trample" me, better stay home and watch TV. And they praised this portal so much.

I'm not afraid that someone wants to bite my bones, hahaha. Sometimes I have some "silly" question at least for some. While reading the above, one gets the feeling that everyone has to go with a guide around, which I haven't done so far. I stick to the markers, ask if I meet someone, read up beforehand, even print the route description and carry it with me, and the equipment is appropriate for the weather conditions. When in doubt, I'll ask hoping they won't "eat me".

I'm interested in what the prices for overnight stay at Kredarica are if you're not a member of a mountaineering association. Because in summer we would go and sleep there or at Planika. lp

it's cheaper if you become a member of PD and have, besides accommodation discounts, also insurance for mountain rescue,...

FIFTH ADVANTAGE Members of the mountaineering organization are also insured for covering rescue costs outside Slovenia, in the mountains of Europe and Turkey, and for repatriation up to 2,712.40 EUR for each claim per year (A members up to 7,928.56 EUR). In Slovenia, rescue is currently still free.

Hello has anyone been to Kredarica these days and what are the conditions (hiking and ski touring)? thanks best

I was there today.. snow starts from Kovinarska koča onwards, it sinks; you can reach Kovinarska koča by car without problems; over Kalvarija "steps" were made, but on the way back the snow is already very soft and walking is quite strenuous..

Conditions super...You can drive to the basin, behind it 100m of drivable torn-up road, which adds about 15 min to the walk. Snow starts under Vrtača with frequent gaps, above Prgarca the blanket thickens and you walk on it most of the way, but no issues, at least not on Saturday, although some new snow fell overnight...

Hello! Those of you who hiked from Krma this year, please reply. I'm interested how far the road from Mojstrana is still solid for an average car. To Kovonarska koča or further? Thanks for the reply.
|
|
|
|
| Daaam13. 08. 2013 |
A little further. Just drive and you'll see how far it goes
|
|
|
|
| heinz13. 08. 2013 |
The road is quite damaged from where it enters the forest (there's a ditch in the middle), but it's still possible to carefully drive all the way to the final parking lot. You can also leave the car near the trough, which extends the hike by about 10-15 minutes. Most people drive to the end.

During our visit to Triglav on 15.8.2013 we were horrified by the stench at Kredarica, due to which we stayed there only a very short time. Sad but true, that we all agreed that the Triglavski dom na Kredarici represents our national disgrace. We hike a lot in the mountains (also in the Julians) but nowhere do the toilets stink so badly that one couldn't sit there with pleasure to drink and eat something. I suggest that the caretakers or PD Ljubljana Matica take as an example e.g. Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih or Koča na Planini pri Jezeru. Full praise to the caretakers there!!!
|
|
|
|
| heinz3. 09. 2013 |
A month ago there was still no such stench. At the end of the summer season, which records up to 1000 visits on certain days, some crap accumulates.. The huts at Sedmerih and Pri jezeru therefore cannot serve as any example, as the comparison is nonsensical.

Tomorrow still visit to Kredarica and then all three huts around Triglav visited this year. Any snow left from Zg. Krma onwards, maybe icy, I'd like info if anyone was yesterday or today up this path, I'll be very glad. More people, more know. Thanks for info and good luck in mountains.

Road plowed, winter conditions, trodden path, crampons come in handy...

| loncaruros15. 10. 2015 |
On 12.10.2015 I set off on this trail. The weather forecast was excellent. Initially some clouds and fog, later the sky cleared at around 1600 m. Views magnificent and the trail too. Except for the last ascents to Kredarica, which are a bit harder in the snow, no problems. At Kredarica, after talking to other hikers and rescuers, I turned back to the valley as they strongly advised against solo ascent to Triglav. Ice, snow and slippery rocks... On descent via the tube, it sinks to the knees, but manageable to the valley. To Triglav next time, when conditions improve.

Today I went from Krma to the shepherd's hut, beautiful day, at the hut only slightly white on shady sides, numerous people I met returning from Kredarica said the path is without issues, otherwise slightly white.

@kokica18: around 35-40 minutes.. there's also 1 parking spot in between Kovinarska koča and the barrier, from there it's about 15 minutes walk to the barrier;
