Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio. In Trbiž we continue left in the direction of Bovec and we follow the road to the junction near Rabeljsko Lake. Here we continue right in the direction of Nevejski preval / Sella Nevea. We follow this road, which is mostly ascending, to a large parking lot at the lower station of the cableway, which runs to the hut Gilberti.
From Bovec, we drive to the border crossing Predel, from which we descend to the Italian side. Just a little after Rabeljsko Lake we come to the junction, where we continue left in the direction of Nevejski preval / Sella Nevea. Then follow the above description.
Route description:
At the end of the parking lot, we notice the sign for mountain hut Gilberti, which points us to the lower part of the ski track. When we step onto the track we continue left and after a shorter ascent we step onto the transport rescue road, which ascends along the track upwards. On this relatively steep and closed-to-traffic road, new views open up to us step by step, which are most beautiful towards the nearby Bela peč and the Montasio group of mountains. The road higher gets very close to the cliffs of Bela peč and then brings us to the upper station of the cableway at the hut Gilberti.
From the hut, we slightly descend (direction west) into a smaller valley, where there is a junction. We continue right in the direction of S.Grubia on the path which runs between the main Kanin ridge on the left and Bela peč on the right. The path ahead first ascends gently through the valley, then starts to ascend more steeply and after a few minutes of ascent brings us to an old military fort on the saddle Bela peč. Behind the fort we continue slightly left in the direction of "bivacco" (right Bela peč 30 minutes very demanding path) on an old military mule track, which is already well destroyed. The path, which slightly descends and then ascends again, runs on locally steep slopes, which are somewhat precipitous in places and exposed to falling stones. But because the path is wide enough in dry conditions it causes no problems. The path then soon brings us to a junction, where we leave the military mule track and head left upwards following the signs "Chiacciaio del Canin, M.C.".
Further, we ascend on a somewhat less beaten trail mostly over scree upwards. The path, marked with red dots and cairns, runs slightly to the left and soon brings us to the first larger snowfield. We continue upwards on the snowfield, and in the upper part we turn right and leave the snowfield. After a shorter crossing to the west we come to the glacier, on which we then ascend in the direction of the Findenegg couloir. At the end of the couloir we will notice the start of the climbing path on the right side.
The climbing path at the beginning steeply ascends next to the steel cable upwards, aided also by some pegs. Further on, the path becomes somewhat less steep for a short time and leads us next to the steel cable over a slightly gravelly slope. The path then turns right and ascends vertically with the aid of pegs and numerous brackets. After the vertical part the path turns left and ascends very steeply next to the steel cable a few more times. At some points we are also aided by some pegs and brackets. Such a path then soon brings us to the border ridge where we join the path that runs along the Slovenian side of the ridge. At the junction we continue right and after a short ascent along the ridge we soon reach the summit.
We can descend along the ascent path or along a somewhat easier path that leads along the Slovenian side past the saddle Prevala.
route map - Visoki Kanin

I walked the loop Gilberti - Kanin - Prevala - Gilberti without problems. The hardest part for me was to hoist myself onto the ledge, because I have shorter legs....
matjaz8412. 08. 2013
Yesterday to the top via ferrata. The snowfield was soft, the final bit wasn't problematic. For crossing I used full winter gear (crampons, ice axe) how to do it without I don't know. But I saw hikers ahead who crossed the snowfield completely without gear - even without trekking poles. It looked problematic and it seemed they wouldn't know how to get out of trouble. Can't imagine slipping and sliding 100m to the bottom. The protections on the ferrata are new and in excellent condition, quite dizzying, cleverly routed. But you have to work hard, as the pegs are sparsely spaced and you have to climb even on completely smooth rock, the cable only for belaying. Anyway, wonderful for me. The path goes straight up, so great caution against falling rocks, especially in the upper part where there are quite a few loose stones you want to grab. Descent was significantly harder than ascent. If I just try to compare difficulty with similar ferratas, it seems harder than Kopiščarjeva, Plemenice etc. If I disregard that no gondola went back to Nevejski preval and that I had "skiing" on "gravel" it was an excellent tour. :-) :-)

Has anyone recently hiked to Kanin via the Julia path or through Krnica, how is the access and entry to the ferrata?
Marta
klm21. 08. 2014
3 weeks ago no problem with gear, of course.
martabojan23. 08. 2015
I would like to go along the Julia path to Kanin but I'm interested in the conditions after the glacier and onwards. Can someone tell me if they went there recently.
Janiel749. 09. 2016
I'm wondering, given that from what I've read the access to Julia ferrata is still snowy in current conditions but passable without major problems, what do you recommend: go to Marusicha and over Vrh Krnice and via Grasselli ferrata to Kanin and down Julia, or vice versa? What's easier? thanks best regards
pikpok9. 09. 2016
No need to bring winter gear. It's definitely better to ascend via Grasselli, as it is much longer, beautiful and scenic ridge path. Julia is slightly steeper but very short and extremely well protected ferrata, so I wouldn't hesitate and descend via that path.
jax9. 09. 2016
In my opinion Grassellijeva is somewhat easier, but also much less secured.
santaoneill29. 07. 2018
We were there on 14 July. The via ferrata is top, cables and pegs new. Winter gear essential, lots of snow before the wall entrance, and also some couloirs to cross, there without crampons and ice axe (better if you have 2) I wouldn't (except maybe for really experienced ones).

Good option to return is then along the ridge back to the Slovenian side to D station, with the chairlift of the pass to the bottom of the pass and then you're quickly on the gondola from Selle to the valley.

Hi, has anyone been on this via ferrata recently this year, is there still snow up to the entrance or is winter gear needed?
Thanks in advance for the reply.
narava201512. 08. 2020
On Friday I was on Kanin, and I met 3 female hikers who came via the ferrata. They confirmed there's snow and you need winter gear.
msle12. 08. 2020
On Sunday 10.08. ferrata Julia. There's still quite a bit of snow, but the snowfield is soft and we crossed it without trouble. We used crampons (without them it would be hard) and trekking poles. We returned to the
Slovenian side to Rifugio Gilberti, to the car by gondola.
megla13. 08. 2020
msle, do you maybe know until what time the gondola operates?

Thanks and best regards.
julya13. 08. 2020
gondola operates 8:30 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 17:30
megla13. 08. 2020
julya, many thanks.
Probably until mid-September?

Has anyone been on the ferrata and can tell what the snow situation is like at the start?
GITA19. 08. 2021 19:51:43
I just read about this today... apparently you can't do it without winter gear...

I was there on 28.7.; conditions have changed, but I doubt for the worse. I had gear with me and used crampons for easier crossing, but even without winter gear I wouldn't have had special problems - two guys I saw ahead crossed without gear - there should be a comfortable track, but some caution is needed at the top.
The main problem was (is) the wide edge crack that requires quite a bit of caution, here the situation could intensify - but winter gear doesn't affect the crossing quality.
If in doubt, definitely take gear - if nothing else, crossing the snowfield, which is quite large, is safer and easier, and even before it at the end of July there was still quite a bit of snow on the path. I can't post pics here, but you can see them - including the entry problem - on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hribolazec/posts/10159292275774356

Best,
Gašper
lojze182521. 08. 2021 19:40:45
Thanks for the info. I went along the ferrata today, had winter gear with me but it stayed in the backpack. The snowfield up to the entry is trampled with deep footprints, so no problems. The edge cracks are practically gone.
stankoju16. 08. 2022 17:04:13
Has anyone walked this path recently?
I'd appreciate info on the conditions.
Thanks

Beginning of August acquaintances led members from Sicily (some for the first time in via ferrata), no need for crampons, all o.k.mežikanje

Toni6422. 07. 2023 18:18:49
At the beginning of August I plan to go to Kanin via the climbing path from Nevejski preval, and I'm interested in the current conditions? Is there snow or ice?
Primozz_9428. 09. 2023 05:54:15
Hello, does anyone have information on how the snowfield is? And is the gondola still operating? Regards, Primož

Fito25. 07. 2024 09:52:49
Hello, does anyone have information on how it is on the snowfield? Best mountain greetings, Boštjan
mirank25. 07. 2024 12:12:51
You've partly answered yourself; there's snow on the snowfield velik nasmeh and extensive areas are still under snow.
That's how it looked from below Montaž 11 days ago; I wouldn't go there without gear myself.
Julijec25. 07. 2024 23:05:49
A week ago, quite a few foreigners were met at the top. They were equipped for the ferrata, but not for snow, so it seems the snowfields are not an obstacle.
Fito26. 07. 2024 09:04:42
Thanks to both. LPP Boštjan
4senna18. 08. 2024 08:37:46
Was up there yesterday. The snow has softened so winter gear is no longer needed!
Tomaž001. 09. 2024 18:11:32
Is there a stamp at the top, or can it be obtained elsewhere so the kids will be happy, thanks
DVas2. 09. 2024 08:34:28
Last time I was there, there was no stamp at the top but in Bum Bar, which I doubt is operating.
turbo2. 09. 2024 14:19:35
Some stamp can probably be found in Gilbertija too. At least it used to be. It's not exactly the Kanin summit, but . . .
padez2. 09. 2024 18:34:14
The maintainer of the path and summit stamp is PD Bovec. You might contact the relevant PD for information. Contact details for PD are on the PD website or PZS.
Daaam2. 09. 2024 18:56:40
PD Bovec is probably one of the more "sloppy" associations. No stamp on Kanin for at least 10 years. I wouldn't say it if it were some little-known and hardly visited summit. Probably no coincidence the whole "saga" around Kanin in summer and winter.
mirank3. 09. 2024 13:17:06
Given how effective they are in other areas there, no improvement is to be expected. It's also true that the municipality, which has a population barely larger than a village in Goriška, cannot have enough active members to care for all paths and peaks in such a large area. Here the complete ineffectiveness and unnecessity of the umbrella organization -PZS- as it is, is evident.
DVas3. 09. 2024 14:07:12
As far as I've talked, they put the stamp in place several times but regardless, it was stolen. Last time they sawed through the iron, if I'm not mistaken. In this case, there's not much you can do.
mirank3. 09. 2024 14:35:12
Whatever you do, even if it's little, do it properly. In many places stamps are on a pole, if it's sturdy I don't know an idiot who would go saw it.
Tomaž004. 09. 2024 05:47:06
Yesterday I spoke with the president of PD Bovec, he said the new stamp has been made but he doesn't know when it will be installed at the top of Kanin
bbugari14. 09. 2024 22:18:18
mirank: if there isn't enough active membership for numerous paths and the area is large, the paths are offered to PZS or another association, if not, they should close the paths and delete them from the path list and hiking maps, remove signposts and put up notices of path closure... nasmeh
mirank5. 09. 2024 13:19:06
That's exactly what I wrote, that PZS should take action. As Julius once wrote, they marked the paths for them years ago but there have been no changes since then. Personally, I'm against chipping and drilling and hammering every few steps, but where necessary it's nice if there's something visible or pleasantmežikanje
TineX11. 06. 2025 19:13:04
I'm interested in the current conditions? Is there still any snow?
Riki896. 08. 2025 07:34:40
Hello, I'm interested if anyone has been to the summit recently, how is the snow before the ferrata, is winter gear needed?
Tomaž0013. 08. 2025 17:21:47
Hi, has anyone been here recently or are crampons needed?
pantharej14. 08. 2025 08:51:14
No
Tomaž0014. 08. 2025 16:06:03
Thanks
Tomaž0016. 08. 2025 11:15:47
Nice well-maintained trail, great views and excellent climbing section, there's a stamp at the top of Kanin
