Access to starting point:
From highway Ljubljana - Koper or Ljubljana - Nova Gorica we go to the exit Razdrto. We follow the road ahead in the village Razdrto and then in the center of the village we continue in the direction of village Strane and Veliko Ubeljsko. Only a little above the village we will get to a large parking lot on which we park.
Route description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the asphalt road which over a bridge crosses the highway and on the other side brings us to a smaller crossroad at mountain signposts. Here we continue left on a macadam road to the spot, where the footpath on Nanos branches off to the right upward. The path at first ascends on a grassy slope, and then goes into the forest, where after a few minutes brings us to the crossing.
We continue right in the direction of the steep path (straight gentle path). The path is then for some time still moderately ascending, crosses scree and then steeply ascends. Further, the path brings us to the first steel cable with the help of which we cross a short slightly exposed ledge. The path is then steeply ascending on a steep but slightly vegetated slope. Ahead we get to for Slovenian mountains unusual chain, which serves as a steel cable. With the help of the chain, we ascend on rugged rocks to a nice panoramic spot. The path here turns a little to the left and is then ascending on an unvegetated slope. On even steeper parts we have fixed safety gear for help, which aren't necessary. More caution is needed, if the ground is wet or icy. The steepness then decreases and the path brings us to a crossing, where we have two options to continue. The path straight goes to the hut over the peak, and the right bypasses it. Both paths a little before the mountain hut join and they are approximately equally long (15 minutes).

Has anyone been up there the last few days?

I remember the ascent to Nanos from my school days, when we went up the steep path and some were screaming in fear. I think teachers should take pupils along the easier path, the one we descended.

I've already been (from Razdrto direction) on three different paths. This one is really a bit harder - but still not for screaming Nowhere precipitous, just sometimes need to use hands a bit. For going up the middle path suits me best, I think it's not described here, it goes between steep and gentle. For descent the gentle one is best, mainly due to the view.

I didn't say the path is very difficult. But for 3rd grade elementary school, when some haven't even been in the hills yet, it's a bit too steep.

Jewel of the mountains, be glad that you hiked such hills. They always took us to Rašica or Šmarna gora, well once we even went by train to Šmarjetna gora.

Given that I'm quite close to home, I've been to Nanos many times, but I've only gone down the steep path once. It's quite exposed all the time and for me, who has trouble with depths, it didn't leave a very pleasant impression. And it was blowing very strongly. Upwards it's quite steep. Personally, the path past SV. Hieronimus is much nicer and more scenic. I'll add some photos. (Trip at the beginning of June)

I recall that for you the 'steep path' to Nanos or to Vojkova koča is too demanding, i.e. the 'view into the depths' bothers you, then please don't go to the Alps.. Nanos is just a nice little hill. No hard feelings..

Neic008, you're exaggerating here. In the Alps (ours and in other countries) there are many interesting paths and beautiful (and high) peaks that even hikers who are not fans of "airy views" and iron on the path can peacefully hike and visit.

I agree.. Nanos is much more demanding in some parts than e.g. most of the paths Krma - Planika or Krma - Kredarica... for example Grintavec (from Suhadolnik) is technically extremely simple ascent and descent, and it's the highest peak of Kamnik-Savinja Alps.. and you get there easier than to Nanos It also depends on the weather (Nanos often windy) and mood LP, M

Halllooooooo, comparing high mountains >2000 m a.s.l. with a hill called Nanos is really inappropriate..!!! The mentioned path to Grintavec also requires 6-8 hours of walking.. In short, the path to Nanos (60 min. easier walking) is a piece of cake..

Uh, I like such smartasses the most , who act like heroes. Everyone according to their abilities and wishes. Kriški podi are already over 2000, but the path is by no means difficult, just long. Let's be glad that more and more people go to some hill every day, instead of to Interspar and let's not underestimate them.
|
|
|
|
| spominčica11. 10. 2008 |
Those who wanted to understand did understand, the rest of the "heroes" I don't even want to comment on. For example, Gradiška Tura is much lower but the climbing route is very demanding. I think the height of the hill and the difficulty of the approach are not related. I've also been above 2000 many times without any problems. And how long someone can walk - the length of the tour, also has no connection here. Maybe I can walk on non-exposed terrain for 10 hours, but I can't cross just one short and exposed ledge in 5 min. Thanks to Kriški, matjažD and reini who understood. Nice weekend.

Hi spominčica, no problem. We're here to exchange info. The more people, the more knowledge. Yesterday my friend and I, who loves hiking but is bothered by exposed parts so we have to combine a bit, did a nice trip to Kriška gora and extended it to Tolsti vrh and then descent to Gozd (gojzda). Wonderful day. At Kriška super service, real homemade and still warm donuts, one free for each, we immediately ordered another schnapps for courage ahead

Today I survived this steep path; nothing serious, but on some sections better not look down to the valley - if you have problems with that - but climb on. Where it's dangerous it's very well protected. For descent I thought the gentler path was a better choice. Well, matter of taste. Nice trip this Nanos!

Horror... Such crowds as today up there I've never seen. Worse than on Triglav.. Regarding the "steep" and "exposed" path I don't want to waste more words.

Grateful for your debate as I spotted the mentioned Gradiška Tura in one reply. First time hearing...must admit...today on beautiful (almost too hot) day my dear and I "jumped on it" and were really thrilled. Nice, airy and well-equipped, ideal for autumn and winter time, when craving "movement" in rocks, my humble opinion also very good prep for serious high tours. On difficulty bone of debate...mostly individual. Some find exposed paths hard or impossible yet climb crags in valley others love vias feel safe with "cable" to hold/clip steep scree scares them shitless...100 people 100 wonders each knows best their place. True (recalling today) it was great pleasure for me climbing no stranger. Would take same path more seriously above 2000 thunderclouds cold hours to hut...sometimes weighs more. Some not enjoy it...others write will. Good to know limits without bad consequences.

I found the steep path quite pleasant, climbing those rocks was the best part of the trail. But I'd say it would be good if they fixed some of the markings here and there, and that stamp at Vojkova koča could also be replaced with a new one?

The path "between gentle and steep" is called Janezova or hunting path (go along the steep path and after 20 min it branches off to the left). Janezova path is not marked. The first 15 min are gentle, then it becomes steep (30 min).

Hello! I myself prefer to go to Nanos via 'that steep' ascent and 'that steep' descent. If I go via Janez's, I don't feel like I've been to Nanos. And for descent too, knees suffer more on Janez's. Anyway, in the mountains you should stick to marked trails. That section with the ladders, I agree, is really excellent. And even at the end of the ladders, I have to go along that right side and not along the lightning conductor, so that the winds from Ubeljsko or from Stran nicely blow through me. Here you feel how powerless you are. The trail seems well marked to me, better than in many places in the Julian Alps. Of course, if you go alone (and multiple times) and pay attention, no problems, but if you get lost in thought while walking, then you might stray, but you should watch the trail anyway. It's also beautiful; you go from Razdrto via 'that steep ascent', to Vojkova koča (have tea there), then to Abrama (or Jeza, for lunch and to see the bear Mitkota), then to sv. Hieronim (short stop), and continue via 'that moderate' back to Razdrto. It's a bit long, and I don't really recommend it in intense heat, because from Abrama to sv. Hieronim it can be quite 'sweaty'. Recommend once a year. Although Nanos is easily accessible, don't mess with it, you need to respect it.

| m22. 12. 2009 |
Hello! On Sunday (20.12.) it was quite cold on Nanos. At least that's what my sources told me. It was well below -20 degrees. And rollerball, how was it?
|
|
|
|
| matko7724. 12. 2009 |
On the first winter day 21.12.09 I jumped again to check what's on top. In Razdrto it was -1, how much up top I don't know. From the parking lot the summit wasn't visible as it was wrapped in clouds swirling one after another along the slope. The path was nicely trodden as Sunday was nice weather and apparently many went up. When I reached the height where clouds and rock were within reach, visibility dropped a lot and wind appeared that strengthened with altitude. On the open slope just below the top gusts became quite strong. Besides, fine frozen snow was blowing that stung the face so cheeks were blooming. Every trip is something new, special even on a hill you've crossed many times and this was no exception.

but that day it was fantastic on Nanos. "m" your sources aren't quite accurate, on Nanos it was minus 10 degrees that day, clear weather and completely no wind. I'm talking about the period from 11.00 to 14.00 if someone went earlier or later e.g. matko77 I don't know if it blew hard, at that time nothing. anyway yes path trodden lots of people up there for the time hut open and cold beer. nice trip. cheers rollerball

On 28.0.2010 after a one-year break I went with my wife in nice weather to Nanos. Everything was wonderful until the hut visit. Usually I snack in the hut and then return to the valley. The space at the counter and the room further gave the look as if we were in a laundry. All walls, windows, floors, tablecloths, benches were damp. And not just damp - wet. You can see the building was quickly a bit heated. Since in corners and by windows everything is black it's probably usual practice. Shame on the house. The other issue was the food. My wife and I ordered Serbian beans and jota. Both were tasteless and not worth the name. In short, such bad food we haven't eaten for a long time. But I remember how in past years we happily ate gnocchi with goulash etc. Until the cook in the hut changes I'll bring my snack along. Best R. Jarni

Hello! On Thursday I'd go to the hut, wondering if it's open or where to get the stamp? Thanks
|
|
|
|
| katjuša224. 05. 2011 |
I don't know if the hut is open on Thursday But there's a stamp in a box in front of the hut (at least there was). And there's also a box with a stamp on the fence by the antennas. It was, hope it's still there.
|
|
|
|
| Karletto24. 05. 2011 |
Most likely the hut is open. Weather is nice.. You can also get the stamp at Grmada (1209m), which is 10 min walk from Vojkova koča to the west.
|
|
|
|
| B217. 07. 2011 |
At the entrance to the hut there is a (broken) box and stamp handle, but without the rubber part. On the other side of the entrance to the hut, there was (once) a TV stamp, which is no longer there, but a shaky and broken box remains!!! So, when the hut is closed on Nanos, you cannot get the SPP stamp or any other. Vojkova koča is a mandatory control point for SPP (Slovenska planinska pot), TV (Transverzala kurirjev in vezistov), NP (Notranjska planinska pot) and Poti MDO PN PD (Pot Meddruštvenega odbora Primorsko - Notranjskih PD)!!! The stamp from nearby Grmada or Suhega vrha is not valid for all listed paths! Likewise, the Transverzala RTV stamp, which was (at least was) in the box on the fence of the transmitter, is not valid! Who should ensure the accessibility of the stamp, replace the (broken) box, install the logbook and remove the other (also broken) box (which is there unnecessarily), is nicely written on the facade (several meters long) of the hut, as soon as we step onto the meadow below it!

Under the access information above, it says to head from the AC towards Ljubljana-Koper or Gorica to the Razdrto exit. But can someone tell me if this exit is for passenger cars with vignette or only for trucks and ABC card, because some say there's a barrier there and without the proper system you can't get through? Thanks in advance......
|
|
|
|
| Janiel7422. 09. 2011 |
My experience from 3.9. The Razdrto exit was all OK, but the joke was on the way home Namely, I drove to the ramp for the exit back onto the AC, and I almost crashed into the ramp that didn't lift... then drove a few meters back... got out of the car, pressed a big button (I think it was red, not sure anymore), got some ticket and with it the ramp lifted.. ))

Blues, you'll definitely get through, but there's really only one lane to go down and then also up to the AC.

The trail is actually not that steep, except on sections where you need to grab the wire or rock. Fitness-wise, it didn't seem too demanding to me. It's partially exposed, but didn't seem that bad to me. I'm not authoritative on that though, since I don't have vertigo.
As for the upper stamps: thank God I don't collect them and have one less hassle in the mountains, but it's silly that the stamp from the 10-min distant summit doesn't count for my transverzala, while a different one does for yours and similar... typical Slovenian parochialism!

| Lara0015. 12. 2011 |
This steep path is one of the most beautiful paths overall in the Slovenian mountains. I've hiked quite a few already and I always like to return via the steep path to Nanos (almost every Saturday). The view in sunny weather, no crowds, a bit of adrenaline on the sections with cables and pegs.... wonderful. At the top, wind (almost always), which can be quite treacherous with its gusts, so the ascent is a real experience. For descent... I prefer the gentle path, or the path to Strane with a mandatory pause at the St. Brica church. Although I then have to walk another 3 kilometers along the road to the car. The steep path is too risky for descent, uncomfortable for knees and ankles and dangerous for those going up (rock crumbling). Our Nanos is really super!

On December 4th, election day, I was on Nanos with my wife, daughter and dog... darkness and very dense fog caught us, and the wind wasn't friendly either... By feel we somehow reached the hut, which they were just closing, as the warden was waiting for her son who was late with transport to the valley due to the dense fog. They were amazed what we were doing on Nanos in such weather. To cut the story short... first they offered us tea and a short one, even though our little dog dirtied the cleaned floor, then they piled all three of us into their car and safely drove us to our car (despite really very dense fog that only cleared at the foot of Nanos), which was parked at the foot of Nanos. THREE CHEERS FOR THE WARDEN AND HER SON - -MIŠO, NASTJA, MARTA AND DOG AJŠA.....

And don't forget, in summer watch out for chamois, I myself ran into one on 01.10.2011 and it didn't move much, as some say deer flee from humans. It was a big one and didn't pay much attention to me. Well, it was a nice sight, as I saw a chamois "live" for the first time.

Laščan: The chapel of St. Brica is between Vojkova koča towards Stran. After about 45 minutes of walking. If you don't observe well around, you can still miss it.=) For winter, I think the best paths are from Razdrto, because they are still somewhat trodden and the wind already blows some snow away, plus at the beginning there's a forest where not much snow accumulates. Sorry for the late reply.

Laščan, if time permits, also check out Votla stena (natural tunnel), from which you get a view of Pivška kotlina, Javorniki, Brkine, Snežniško pogorje, Učka... For me, since I've done Nanos too much and gotten tired of it, Votla stena is the nicest thing to see on Nanos.

Has anyone noticed on weekends a certain little old man - ricast with long hair, blondish? Last time I met him in the morning on the steep - me up, him down. Then when I finish the hike, I get in the car and see him marching in Sežana towards ITA. Once I noticed him also on Opčine.

I myself met this man only once - in the snow with snowshoes - the hut keeper said that he comes to Nanos almost every Sunday and apparently on foot from the Trieste area...

WARNING: On Saturday we went up, great weather, but when we returned to the parking lot, the neighboring car had a broken window. The parking lot is probably very attractive to various burglars, so I recommend not leaving anything valuable in visible places or put everything in the trunk, and close the windows completely. Better to have a 10 degrees hotter car and wait a bit longer to air it out than risk a break-in. Best

If memory serves me right, it’s like this. From the hut, go towards the little church of St. Heronimo. When you reach the end - when you’re on the rise and see the church below, turn 90 degrees to the left - I think there’s a mark on the rock there, but no other signs. Actually, this part for the return is poorly marked, but once you find this, you won’t have any trouble afterwards - the path (GITA attached the link for you) is visible and marked.

Enka and GITA, many thanks for the information, lp

| Laščan18. 10. 2012 |
You can’t miss it. On the rock there’s a mark and inscription “Razdrto”. When you’re there, descend to the little church too - you won’t regret it. At the top of the steep path or. at the last cable, look around the nearby rocks. You’ll spot a carved little angel which was created here by the true master stonemason Vid Premrl. He left traces also on Vremščica, and under Loniča or. Holy Trinity, and probably also on Sveta gora and elsewhere!

End of May we were at Nanos. The hut keeper was very unfriendly. In the hut we asked if they had another stamp, as the one attached to the hut is not the "real" stamp from the traverse. The keeper replied quite rudely "the one you like to steal so much?!" and literally yelled at us (for an unknown reason) in front of the other guests. After she gave us a series of comments on how we would ruin the stamp if we stamped the booklet ourselves, how hikers steal stamps, and if we realize it costs the keeper 30 euros, she finally stamped our booklets. We have conquered quite a few mountains, but we have never experienced such behavior... I think hikers don't deserve such treatment either. We don't deserve generalizations that all hikers ruin everything and steal everything. We would rather give everything away than intentionally harm anyone. If we entered the hut friendly and in good spirits, we ended up with a somewhat bitter day.

Yesterday we were on Nanos, up the steep path, down the gentle one. Total 7.5km in three hours. But the steep path could be marked as difficult, it has pegs, cables, deep exposure in some sections. The day was wonderful, warmer at the top than later in Koper. Lots of hikers.

Nothing special, here and there some patch, more like conditions in October. Today it was 9 degrees at the bottom.

Hey! Both of us with our daughter on Nanos, up in one hour and not in one hour 45! No debates, a couple of meters of via ferrata and here we are up. At the hut accordion was playing, both of us were messing with pršut. I asked her if via ferratas in Slovenia have wifi, she said I'm silly. We didn't talk much more. Meanwhile wind picked up on top, we quickly went down from Nanos as grandma said it's steep down. No, go ask in Postojna. Nice though! Oh and for all those interested in the path, mainly no more snow!

Is this trail suitable for a dog?

If the dog is used to rocky trails, it won't be a problem for him. But it might be for everyone who meets you, as dogs on this trail kick loose stones and you have to be very careful where they walk or really keep them under control. In short, people do hike here with dogs, but it's not always nice for others

Hello, does anyone happen to have climbed to the top via this trail in the last few days? I'm mainly interested in what the conditions are like on the steep trail? Is there still any snow and ice?

Yesterday there were no traces of snow or ice anymore. Except for a few tiny patches of snow at the hut.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to write the reply myself. The path was great without any trace of snow or ice.

Maybe different now, couple days ago no panic. For better feel crampons are not superfluous, esp. downhill, quite icy and nasty on ridge down to Sv. Hieronim. Extra caution recommended there, same at crossing when starting descent to valley. Good luck

If there is no fog and wind, it is a real idyll these days. The path is dry and normally passable. Good luck

Super path, extremely well secured and probably the only path in the Primorsko-Notranjska region that, due to climbing on cables and pegs, reminds of high-mountain ascents. Of course, as for all other hills, but especially here, it's important to have appropriate footwear and be in proper condition. On weekends it can be a bit crowded (lots of yielding to others), so we need to be quite patient to avoid slips. The views are phenomenal (practically over the entire region), and if we return via the gentle path (recommended also to avoid yielding on the steep path), we have a beautiful view of Vipava Valley, Trnovo Plateau and Julian Alps. Just a few steps off the path is the church of St. Jerome, which is also worth a visit. At Vojakova hut they have (probably only on nice weekends) food and drink service on a take-out basis. Really beautiful circular trip!

Is the path suitable for children and is the self-belay kit not needed? Or is it? I'm talking about children 10 years and older. Thank you very much and best regards.

SVK is completely unnecessary on this path.

Just a warning: Yesterday 31.7.2024 the fountain at the start of the trail was closed, the hut open only until 17:00, so thirst was great. If someone goes up after work like I did yesterday, this info is in place... The caretakers left water bottles in the "winter room" so I can only say thanks. :-)

Was up there yesterday. The hut is nicely arranged, friendly staff, and you even find the proper stamp right at the entrance (:
