Access to starting point:
From Sarajevo, we drive towards Foča and just before it, we turn towards Gacko and Tjentište (right road). At the beginning of Tjentište, we turn sharply left at the abandoned „Energopetrol“ gas station. Along a poor asphalt road we soon reach a barrier where we must pay the entrance fee for Sutjeska National Park. We continue along the gravel road and ignore smaller side paths left and right. After 7 km it becomes asphalt for a short time, this is Dragoš sedlo with monuments to fallen partisan heroes and a path to the viewpoint of Skakavac waterfall (5 min). After approximately 4 km we reach a U-shaped bend where the sign for Prijevor directs us straight onto a smaller road. After approximately 3 km we reach the parking lot and camping area.
Route description:
From the parking lot we continue along the road which starts to descend and soon narrows into a well-marked and trodden footpath. Soon it descends to a meadow near Suho Lake (1350 m) and then turns into the forest on the left side, bringing us to Trnovacko Lake (1534 m) in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Since the lake is located in Montenegro, at the hut where we can also refill water, it is often necessary to show personal documents and pay the entrance fee to NP Piva. We continue along the right side of the lake then steeply into the forest and later a clearing. After approximately another hour and a half we arrive at the ridge, where signs direct us to the left. We follow the gentle path along the ridge for about one to one and a half hours, before the summit there is a short ascent, then we are at the top of Maglić where there is a flag on an iron pole.

Discussion about the trip Prijevor - Maglić
GričarA29. 08. 2016
The road was in very very bad condition in the month of July, because of which I turned around at sedlo Dragoš and skipped the summit.

A week ago, two vans with eight people each arrived at Prijevor, the road is really bad, but passable! We took another route: from the parking lot we went left up - signpost, the path is marked, through fairly steep grass, a bit through the forest and along the clogged gully to the walls. There is a 20m section of the ascent secured with a cable, then nothing more, but every 30m there are bolts with rings for belaying. Whether belaying is necessary or not is subjective. Most of our participants didn't even need it. After 150m we reach the ridge and to the summit the path is easy. For the ascent we needed 2.5 hours of moderate hiking! Most descended the other side - NW, the so-called "Postman's Path" to Dernečišta, where we came to pick them up with the vans. Nice loop tour, up very demanding, down demanding!

At the end of July we went to Maglić directly from Prijevor (1.5 h - demanding marked trail), then returned via the described trail above. The road to Prijevor is normally drivable with the right amount of caution (first 2nd gear, towards the end more 1st gear). The Prijevor - Maglić - Trnovačko jezero - Prijevor trail is an excellent one-day circular tour (13.5 km, 1350 m ascent, 5 h walking), suitable also for well-trained children. Trnovačko jezero is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes I have seen.

We are going to Maglić at the end of the week - from Dernečišta. I'm interested if the start of the trail by the road is visible or marked.
Ulmus23. 08. 2022 14:34:41
We went from Prijevor, but I didn't notice a marked starting point from Dernečišta by the road. It's true I wasn't particularly paying attention. Why not go from Prijevor? It's shorter and faster, leaving more time and energy for Trnovačko jezero.

Ulmus, you didn't notice the starting point of the mentioned trail because you didn't take the "right" road. There at the U-bend you went right or straight to Prijevor, but Dernečište is left in that bend.
Felix, the starting point of the Postman's Trail is about 1.6 km from that U-bend and to the right, I don't know either if it's marked. But I agree with Ulmus, the Prijevor - direct - Maglić - Trnovačko jezero trail is a great choice, there's a hut at the lake, you can swim, and I think it's 1 euro entrance to the park (you're in Montenegro here). You might see somewhere that it's an alpine route, but it's not. The trail is secured with some fixed cables, I'd compare it to the one on Nanos, the biggest issue might be the scree to the wall, but you can easily bypass it along the edge. You can privately leave me your email and I'll send you the starting point on the map. Good luck

Aha, bongo, I didn't know that. Otherwise I completely agree. The water in the lake at the end of July was a pleasant 23 °C.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I watched the trail from Prijevor on video, for me and some others it's no problem, but I have some with me who are not exactly up for such a trail.
Bongo, I sent ZS.

Miri, this is not an amateur hiker, but one who earns from this - given that he mentions clients.

Maglić (2386m), highest peak of BiH, 9.9.2023. Ascent from Prijevor along the secured path, descent to Trnovačko jezero and return via Suve jezerine back to the starting point.
The road from Tjentište to Prijevor (17km, 1100m elevation gain) is in very poor condition and passable for cars with normal ground clearance or off-road vehicles. Average driving speed with a normal car is below 15km/h due to unevenness, mostly driving in first gear, same on descent. The road is not steep otherwise. Average gradient 6-7%. Those who want to spare their car the trouble can rent a VW Golf 2 from the Košuta apartments managers (Tjentište) for 35 eur. The start of the path is at the parking lot on Prijevor and is clearly visible. The path itself is well-trodden and marked. In the "climbing" section, a helmet is mandatory due to stonefall from hikers. A via ferrata set is hard to use because the cables lie untensioned on the rock. The path past Trnovačko jezero (over Montenegrin Maglić, initially gentle on beautiful grassy terrain, then steep descent to the lake) is also well marked and without peculiarities. At the lake there is a small hut where you need to show ID (Montenegrin territory) and pay 1 eur entrance fee for Piva National Park. There you can also get cold beer, coffee and something to eat. Camping and swimming are allowed at the lake (water is relatively warm). They can transport your camping gear from Prijevor to the lake with horses.
Pure walking time for an average hiker on the described circular tour is 6-7 hours. On the return, besides the wonderful lake, I was impressed by the views of vast high-alpine meadows and the feeling that there is still a lot of unhiked, pristine terrain around here.
