Access to starting point:
A) From the highway Ljubljana - Jesenice, take the exit Kranj - east, then continue driving in the direction of Jezersko. When we arrive in Preddvor, leave the main road and continue driving left, then after some 10 m, opposite the company Jelovica, continue right in the direction of the village Potoče, St. Jakob and Potoška gora and lake Črnava. Further on, the road leads us through the settlement Hrib, above which we arrive at a crossroad, where we continue straight (left Hotel Bor and lake Črnava, right Senior Citizens' Home Preddvor). Next follows about 100 m of a light ascent to the chapel, where the road turns right, we drive along it past a few more houses, then before the Senior Citizens' Home turn left onto a larger macadam parking lot.
B) From the highway Jesenice - Ljubljana, take the exit Kranj - west and at the first crossroad continue left. Further on, we drive through the underpass under the highway, then arrive at a roundabout, from which we continue driving in the direction of Golnik. The route ahead leads through the settlement Mlaka pri Kranju, and at the end of the settlement we continue right in the direction of the settlement Srakovlje. This is followed by driving through Srakovlje, Spodnja Bela, Srednja Bela to Zgornja Bela, where we continue right towards Preddvor. At the end of Preddvor, just some 10 m before the road joins the main road Zgornje Jezersko - Kranj, continue left in the direction of the village Potoče, St. Jakob and Potoška gora and lake Črnava. Further on, the road leads through the settlement Hrib, above which we arrive at a crossroad, where we continue straight (left Hotel Bor and lake Črnava, right Senior Citizens' Home Preddvor). Next follows about 100 m of a light ascent to the chapel, where the road turns right, we drive along it past a few more houses, then before the Senior Citizens' Home turn left onto a larger macadam parking lot.
Route description:
A few steps before the start of the parking lot, by the fence of the Senior Citizens' Home Preddvor, we will notice hiking signposts, and we head onto the path in the direction of Senčnica Josipine Turnograjske. The path starts by the already mentioned fence, then continues through the forest. Through the forest we ascend quite steeply for a few minutes, then the path levels out and brings us to Senčnica Josipine Turnograjske, where there is also a logbook box with a logbook.
From the top there follows a short descent along the forest path, then we reach a forest road, which we follow to the left, along which we descend lightly for a short time. Soon we reach the other wider road (the road that leads from the parking lot near the Senior Citizens' Home Preddvor and bypasses Senčnica Josipine Turnograjske), which we cross slightly to the left, where at the entrance to the forest we notice red hiking signposts (up to here also possible via the aforementioned road).
We continue in the direction of the ruins of Novi grad (Pusti grad) and the footpath towards St. Jakob and Potoška gora. The path ahead ascends moderately through the forested valley, then splits into two parts.
We continue slightly right in the direction of St. Jakob, Potoška gora and Javorov vrh (left Novi grad (Pusti grad) and Juhantova pot) along the path that gradually veers further to the right from the valley. The marked path, which occasionally ascends more steeply, further on crosses the forest road several times, which leads towards St. Jakob, the mountain hut Planinska koča pri Franciju and the mountain hut Planinska koča Iskra na Jakobu. Higher up, at the red sign we step back onto the road and continue left along it. We walk some 10 m along the road, then continue slightly right in the direction of the mountain hut Planinska koča Iskra na Jakobu (straight to Planinska koča pri Franciju). There follows a few more minutes of ascent and from the right the path "along the road" joins us. We continue left and the path leads us out of the forest to a marked junction, where we take the lower left path in the direction of St. Jakob (right Potoška gora, Javorov vrh...). Only a few minutes of gentle ascent remain, and the path first brings us to the church of St. Jakob, a few steps further to the mountain hut Planinska koča Iskra na Jakobu.

We also headed to sv. Jakob above Preddvor. There are quite a few paths to sv. Jakob (and the Planinska koča Iskra), which merge and split along the way. I am attaching the GPX track of our path, which on the ascent mostly matches the described path, except that we went past the hut at Franci and descended along the road. http://www.mapmytracks.com/explore/activity/369465

I must also praise the wonderful view towards the Julijci, Kranj and Ljubljana.

Strange, no praise for the "excellent, friendly" caretaker at Iskra hut. I personally felt his friendliness, I thought a physical confrontation would almost be needed, such a person is not for working with people, I've heard similar opinions from others who visited the otherwise friendly Iskra hut. Dear managers of this hut, this person needs to be replaced.

I don't know what you're talking about, I've been up there at least 30x this year for running training, the guy is friendly, a real Caretaker with a capital C. I'm surprised by the description, because I'm born in Preddvor, I know tons of people there who go up multiple times a day, but this is the first I've heard. Your statement, namely. Last time I was up there about 3 months ago.. Maybe there's a different (new) caretaker?

Last Friday around 20:30 my wife and I arrived at the hut intending to overnight and continue the trail the next day, but the caretaker told us THERE IS NO ACCOMMODATION. And what else was left for us but back to the car and home to MB. Luckily, friendly local mountaineers shortened our descent, who were also surprised by this. If there really is no accommodation at the MOUNTAIN HUT !!!!!!!!! it should at least be posted somewhere. Safe steps.

They are renovating, at least ksn weeks ago they started, so probably because of that it's impossible to get accommodation

This morning I went up this trail. It was a bit muddy and slippery. Otherwise, it's the local peak of Preddvor, visited every day. Even this morning I met hikers. On weekends, it's full of them.

what are the conditions after the glaze storm? Is the path passable or not?

The path to Jakob is nicely passable, nothing broken can be seen. We were at Jakob on Sunday, huge number of visitors.

krančanka-on Saturday there was a clearing action by pd predvor, pd mercator, cyclists, firefighters... that's why on Sunday the path was almost like before the flood! LP

How far apart are Koča Iskra na Jakobu and Dom pri Franciju? I see the starting point is the same, and the direction from the start is the same.

Today we were at Jakob and saw that they finally changed the hut keeper. It was about time the hut comes back to life.

We two were also there on New Year's Eve morning, pleasantly surprised... A friendly word and sincere smile along with the service, perhaps even path advice, should be standard in all mountain huts

I was also there on Saturday at Jakob and the new hut wardens deserve only praise, other huts should follow their example. Very friendly and hospitable hut wardens. May it stay like this and we'll gladly return

Hard to comment on previous hutkeeper but from daughter's experience today on sports day new one not role model. Stuck sign on toilet out of order allowed only teachers. Even kids who bought drinks sent to woods for loo. Boys no big issue girls didn't go all day. Don't know if right attitude to future hikers.
