Access to starting point:
First, we drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo (you can get there via the border crossing Rateče or Predel to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then on the highway in the direction of Vidma / Udine to the exit Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of the village Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then descends and brings us to a junction, where we continue left (right is also possible) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. In all following junctions, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo and then the signs for the alpine pass Passo di Falzarego. Already in the first part of the ascent towards the pass Falzarego we will come to a junction, where the signs for pass Passo di Giau (2233 m) and Marmolada direct us left. The road after the pass Giau starts descending, and we follow it through the villages in the lower part in the direction of Marmolada or pass Passo di Fedaia. The road, which then again starts ascending, brings us higher to the pass Fedaia where we park on the parking lot at the mountain hut Rifugio Fedaia.
Access from Primorska: We drive on the highway in the direction of Padova, but only to the highway junction, where we continue in the direction of the region Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends, and we follow the road ahead in the direction of the town Belluno, where at the larger junction we continue right in the direction of the town Agordo. From the mentioned town onwards we follow the frequent signs for Marmolada or pass Passo di Fedaia. When we arrive at the mentioned pass, we park on the parking lot at the mountain hut Rifugio Fedaia.
Route description:
From the parking lot at the mountain hut we turn left onto the macadam road (transport-rescue road), which leads alongside the cableway. The road ascends along the ski slope below the slopes of the peak Sass del Mul and soon a nice view opens towards Lake Fedaia. We continue walking along the road, which ascends through the valley between the peaks Punta Serauta and Sas da les Unesc. The road along the ski slope then turns slightly left below the slopes of the peak Punta Serauta. Further on, we walk for some time along the road, which ascends near the cableway, then the road soon ends.
At the end of the road, we continue left towards the precipitous walls of the peak Punta Serauta. On this section the path is poorly visible, but the ascent is not difficult, as the slope is still relatively gentle. A somewhat steeper ascent follows on the left side of the valley, which brings us to the start of the glacier.
Here we equip ourselves with ice axe and crampons and continue the ascent along the ski slope. Further on, we ascend along the ski slope on the left side of the valley for quite some time towards the Serauta saddle, where there is the intermediate station of the gondola cableway. When we approach the saddle, we will notice a tunnel on the left, which leads from the ski slope to the hut Rifugio Serauta.
We continue straight along the ski slope, while left through the tunnel it is only a few minutes of easy walking to the hut. Further on, we ascend along the right side of the ski slope, as there are quite a few glacier crevasses on the slopes to the left of the ski slope. In the final part of the ascent, even when ascending along the right edge of the ski slope, we cross a glacier crevasse. If the path along the ski slope is not marked and trodden, due to the crevasses it is necessary to walk roped up.
After crossing the glacier crevasse, only a short ascent remains to the upper station of the gondola cableway.

The cable car (very old chairlift) goes from rif. Pso Fedaia (when ascending from Malga Ciapele, before the lake there's parking at Pso Fedaia) and it takes you to cca 2,600 m (maybe a few meters more). I don't know the price, but let's say it's about like the neighboring cable car to Pta. Peniu (rif. Fiancon), which is 6-7 EUR up or 9-10 EUR round trip. We didn't use that cable car, I walked up, but prices must be around there.

The cable car has been dismantled and a new one is being built. But you can drive to the other side of the lake, from where the cable car goes to Rifugio Padon (upper station is 200 m aside). Ticket price in 2013 is 9 €.

So, now it's only possible on foot to rif. Fiancon?

DR., I think this is Marmolada itself, not the opposite slope which has nothing to do with Marmolada (the view is exceptional). Anyway, thanks for the useful information about the cable car.

For the weekend we were in the Dolomites, on Marmolada. On Saturday we ascended to the Pian dei Fiacconi hut, which we planned to do on Sunday via ferrata Cresta Ovest to Pta Penia, but on Saturday afternoon we two headed to Punta Rocca (3,305 m), which is the left summit on the Marmolada ridge. Unlike the described path, we two decided to go naturally up the glacier. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated during the ascent, so we slightly changed the plan and climbed only to the upper (third) station of the cable car, and from there to the first accessible summit (not on the map). We descended first via the ski slope, then turned left and naturally down to the Pian dei Fiacconi hut. And some pictures ...
