Access to starting point:
We leave Štajerska highway at exit Šempeter, and then we follow the signs for Šempeter, Šešče pri Preboldu, and Matke. When we arrive in Matke, we continue driving along the stream Kolja, and we drive to a crossroad where it says Matke left and right (house numbers left 56-65 and 81, right 55 and 66-71). Here is the beginning of the described path. We park in a suitable place nearby, ensuring that our parking does not obstruct traffic or any potential forestry or other activities.
Route description:
From the starting point, we continue on a slightly left road (right Golava and Mrzlica past Kočet), which continues through the valley, and a little further, the path from Hom joins from the left near a homestead. The path ahead leads us past a beehive, and when the road turns right and crosses a small stream, we go slightly left onto a cart track that ascends alongside the stream full of tires. We then cross the stream and ascend by the house to a nearby road, along which we climb to a marked crossing at Počivalnik.
Here we go left in the direction of Kamnik (right Mrzlica) and continue on a gentle cart track, which we leave after a few minutes to take a footpath on the left that ascends a fairly overgrown slope. The path and the slope become quite steep further on, and the path leads us mostly straight upward. Further, we ascend on a path that is already dangerous for slipping in dry conditions, and in wet conditions, considerable caution is needed to avoid slipping, especially when descending the path. After approximately 30 minutes of steep ascent, we reach the peak of Kamnik, where a small bivouac is located.
We can descend on a slightly less steep northwestern path.
The description and pictures refer to the condition in March 2008.

Discussion about the trip Matke - Kamnik (southern way)

The path could be described as a demanding marked path. Near the summit it is really very steep, in places there is almost no path, and no cables to assist us. Especially for descent - not suitable!

Please mark both paths to Kamnik at least as partially difficult, if not difficult. It's true there are no aids like pitons and wire ropes, but their absence shouldn't be a reason to mark the path as easy. Especially the southern path is quite steep below the summit and sometimes you need to use your hands. When wet and slippery, it's also very dangerous for slipping. Kamnik is a beautiful hill, but it shouldn't be underestimated. I'm a local and have climbed it many times. If you've marked Andrej's (Shepherd's) path to Golava as partially difficult, you should mark the southern path to Kamnik as difficult, and the northern as partially difficult. Especially in springtime, caution is advised as snakes are awakening and adders also live on Kamnik.

Thanks for the notice. I changed the difficulty of both paths to partially demanding, or demanding.

Today conquered Gozdnik and soon Kamnik tempts me. If I understand correctly, for a circular hike from Matke, the most suitable ascent is via the southern route and descent via the northern?

CarpeDiem247, the southern path is steeper in the upper part, and if it's wet, it slips on both. Regards

The southern path to Kamnik has been renovated and is now equipped with four fixed cables, which are certainly very welcome from a safety perspective. The mountain itself may lose a bit of its somewhat wild charm with this intervention, but safety is definitely the top priority.
