Access to starting point:
From the Ljubljana-Jesenice highway, take the Ljubelj exit and follow the road towards the border crossing. We leave the main road at the spot where the signs for »camp and Podljubelj« direct us to the right. When we leave the main road, we will already after a few meters arrive at a crossroad, where we continue left in the direction of »Kofce«. Further, we drive through the village on a slightly ascending road and then turn right in the direction of »Matizovec and Kofce«. This occasionally somewhat narrower road, which is asphalted in the lower part, we then follow to a larger marked parking lot, about 150 elevation meters below the farm Matizovec.
Route description:
From the large free parking lot we continue on a macadam road, on which in approximately 20 minutes we arrive at the farm Matizovec.
From Matizovec we continue on a rough road in the direction of Dom na Kofcah, and on some successive crossings, we carefully follow the blazes. After a few minutes of walking on a rough road or cart track, the blazes direct us to a steep footpath which first ascends diagonally to the left and then transitions to a forested ridge, where it turns slightly to the right. Further, we ascend on a steep mountain path, which higher crosses a cart track and behind it gradually flattens. A little further on, the forest thins out, the marked path turns right into the forest and a little higher joins the cart track, which ascends diagonally to the right. The cart track higher turns to the left, and from the right also joins the marked path from Kal.
From the junction onward the forest ends, and the increasingly scenic path brings us in 5 minutes of further walking to the Dom na Kofcah.
From the Dom na Kofcah we continue right in the direction of the mountain pasture Šija. The path first in a gentle descent crosses the slopes towards the east, then joins a wide cart track, which brings us out of the forest onto the mountain pasture Ilovica. The path then starts to ascend slightly and after a few more minutes of easy walking brings us to the shelter on the mountain pasture Šija.

The shelter on Planina Šija called Taborniški dom Šija has been open every weekend also in winter time since May 2014, non-stop in the main season from 15.6 - 15.9. The new caretakers invite you as it is only half an hour of pleasant walk from Kofce to us.

One question: can you reach this hut also via Zelenica or from the hut at the source of Završnica? There is also a signpost for Šija there, but I'm not sure it's the same thing ...

Today parked at the marked parking lot below Matizovec, which some still don't respect properly. No need to worry about that. Then to Koča na Kofcah, where there were many visitors, then on to the Taborniški dom na Šiji. Friendly caretaker, chatted a bit with everyone who came, in addition to the ordered drinks she brought some pieces of homemade friends, which you don't experience just anywhere, even though you know Šija is in Gorenjska. A bit for fun, but the atmosphere was pleasant, nice weather too. No mosquitoes, so it was quite nice to sit a bit in the sun and enjoy the peace. Back unfortunately the same way to Matizovec and on to the parking lot, where the heated tin was waiting. Nice trip, about 3.5 hours of leisurely walking and enjoying nature. We just didn't find any mushrooms, although we usually pick them along the paths for one or two soups. Next time maybe. May the nice weather continue to serve you, have a nice feeling and pleasant trips in our beautiful mountains.

I will allow myself a small correction to the "Access to the starting point" note. Now driving by car to Matizovec is not recommended, but there is a nice and large parking lot 20 minutes walk below it, which offers free parking for steel horses. The wish of the residents of the Matizovec farm is to park at this parking lot and not to dust the meadows by driving higher. I am convinced that other people's property must also be respected and that real mountaineers have no problem with the additional 20 minutes of walking. And you also show that you learned to read in elementary school and understand what you read. This is my personal opinion, others show it with their actions.

Now a second parking lot right above the first, old one has also been additionally arranged. Driving up further also destroys the gravel, and the road must be clear for traffic because trucks also come up for wood transport from the sawmill.

3.9. from the parking lot at Veliki vrh; - beautifully arranged large parking lot below Matizovec, which offers the hiker at least a short initial warm-up before the continued ascent and there is no need to continue higher with steel horses; it is true, however, that the basic trail descriptions are generally outdated due to "the tooth of time", so it is good to follow additional comments on current conditions during the first ascent-visit or to inquire beforehand; regards

The scout hut on Planina Šija or Shelter on Šija is open to all mountain lovers. Peace and home-made delicacies are at home with us. We are also open outside the season on weekends and holidays regardless of weather conditions. Welcome half an hour from Kofce onwards.

The caretaker at Dom Šija is exceptionally friendly. I definitely recommend visiting the hut, hot meal, struklji or just tea - 100x better than that dreck at Kofce. The view is equally nice and the whole hiking experience much more pleasant due to the peace and warm welcome.

Some don't go to the mountains for struklji and service in huts. Still thanks for the info.

Has anyone been up there recently (after freshly fallen snow)? Is Matizovec passable? Can you safely ski back from Šija?

Great path. We walked it with children in 1h 50min, without rushing. Warning though, the parking is not free! Parking costs 4 EUR/day (payment with coins or card).
