Kreuzeckbahn - Mernik Alm

Access to starting point:
Drive to Spittal an der Drau and take the exit for Lienz. Follow the regional road via Lendorf, after which drive a few kilometers and then take a right turn in the direction of Möllbrücke, Mühldorf and Obervellach. After Mühldorf, the locality Unterkolbnitz follows, in which the road branches left to Kreuzeckbahn (the junction is marked). The road goes through this locality and crosses the bridge. Soon after the bridge you arrive at the lower station of Kreuzeckbahn. The ride to the upper station takes 11 minutes (from 605 to 1207 meters). The opening hours are from June to the penultimate week of September every day from 9 am to 5 pm (as of the year 2017).

Route description:
We leave the upper train station of Kreuzeckbahn and continue above the accumulation lake to the road. After a few minutes, we pass the larch tree growing there since 1770. We follow the signs for Mernik Alm or Kleiner Salzkofel or Großer Salzkofel. Soon the signs direct us to a footpath that goes through the forest for a while until it joins the road again. There are many signs with information about sights and even proverbs. The signs eventually lead us to a point where there is a barrier across the road. Here we have an option to step on the footpath immediately or follow the road for about 100 meters and then follow a footpath. The latter is a better option. The path eventually leads us to the Mernik mountain pasture.
