Karnica / Sella Carnizza - Monte Musi (western peak)

Access to starting point:
From the road Kobarid – Bovec in the village Žaga we turn towards the border crossing Učja. When we enter Italy, at the junction we continue right towards the saddle Karnica (Sella Carnizza). We follow the narrow road all the way to the mentioned saddle where we park.

Route description:
On the saddle where there are signposts, we follow the footpath in the direction of Vrh Muzcev (Monte Musi). The path ascends through the forest and at first runs westwards, then turns towards the south. The forest through which we ascend has many rocks and boulders, and the path also leads us past some ruins.
Higher up, we will notice limestone pavements along the path, and for a short section a view opens up, mainly towards the north. This path brings us to a junction marked with an inscription on a rock.
Here a poorly trodden path marked with red dots branches off to the left (a kind of marked pathless terrain) that approaches Vrh Muzcev from the east. At the junction we continue right along the better-trodden path, which then heads westwards. Here the path ascends less steeply and occasionally even descends a little. The path leads us onto a slope more densely covered with dwarf pines, and along the way we will also notice several abysses. From here the path starts to offer some views; on a short section fixed safety ropes are present, though they are not strictly necessary. The path then turns more towards the south again and leads us past numerous boulders. This path brings us onto a slope partly covered with grass and begins to climb towards the saddle below the summit of Veliki Rob (Viliki Rop). As we start ascending towards this saddle, we reach a junction where a path branches off to the right to the chapel Madonna del Cacciatore, located in a nearby cave.
We continue along the marked path and ascend quite steeply on a trail that has a fair amount of loose gravel in places. This path then brings us to the saddle, where a view opens up towards the west and south.
From the saddle there is a short traverse followed by an ascent up a steep grassy slope that leads to the ridge where there is a junction.
To the left, an unmarked footpath leads to the nearby eastern peak of Muzcev, while we continue straight ahead and begin descending a steep, mostly grassy slope. This path brings us to the first steel cables. From here on, the use of self-belaying and a helmet is also highly recommended.
We descend along the steel cable to the notch, after which the path briefly leads along the southern side of the ridge. Further on, the path ascends and descends several times over smaller notches. The path leads us along and beside the ridge towards the western peak of Muzcev. Occasionally on the southern side and occasionally on the northern side of the ridge. A considerable amount of caution is required on the route, as it is protected only in the most difficult sections. In sections that are slightly less demanding but still exposed, the path is not secured. After numerous shorter ascents, descents, and traverses, the path brings us below the slope of the western peak of Muzcev. The path turns to the southern side of the peak, where we reach a junction. To the left and downward, a secured path leads towards Bivouac Brollo, while we continue to the right and, after a short ascent over rocky terrain, reach the western peak of Muzcev, where the summit register box is also located.
