Access to starting point:
From the Ljubljana–Koper highway, take the Postojna exit and follow the road ahead in the direction of Pivka, Reka and Ilirska Bistrica. In the settlement Pivka, leave the main road which runs towards Ilirska Bistrica and continue driving towards the village Knežak. Just a little after Knežak, we come to the village Šembije, where we pay attention to the first turn-off to the left. So from the main road we turn sharply left and continue driving on a macadam road which first ascends gently, then a little more steeply over karst fields. The road then flattens and brings us to a smaller plateau-like area below Volovja reber. If we intend to do a circular tour along the ridge of Volovja reber, we can park here already; if not, we drive further along an occasionally somewhat rougher macadam road, which higher brings us to a sharp left turn, in the middle of which a rougher road branches off to the right. We continue on the left "main" road, which higher brings us to the next crossroad, at which we park.
Route description:
From the crossroad, we go sharply left onto a somewhat rougher forest road which starts to ascend transversely over increasingly panoramic grassy slopes. The increasingly rough road soon turns right and almost completely flattens. A little further, we notice a rougher cart track which branches off to the right from the road (path to Velika Milanja 20 minutes), but we continue straight ahead on the road which soon brings us to the saddle between Velika Milanja on the right and the peak Bele ovce on the left.
Here the road turns left again (direction west) and after a few more steps brings us to the upper foot of Bele ovce (peak Bele ovce 5 minutes). The mentioned peak is bypassed by the rougher road or already cart track on the right northern side.
The gentle road, which continues with some shorter ascents and descents, turns right a little further on. Right at the place where the road turns right, we leave it and continue the ascent over the gentle slopes of Volovja reber, across which a pleasant path runs. We follow the mentioned path, which ascends only gently all the time, to the panoramic summit.

Discussion about the trip Kamenščina - Volovja reber

Was there 11.8.2011. Path description very reliable. But very disappointed with what I saw. Everything fenced with kilometers of plastic netting, from which my son and I rescued a trapped roe deer. I cut a lot of it with pleasure. Nowhere, literally nowhere, any markers, no signs about birds and other animals, completely neglected. At least the peace is magical.

Beautiful hill and one of the nicer views in the area. Below the hill there are great paths for mountain biking, hikers (even those without much fitness) can choose the Milan transverse over 4 peaks (Milanka, Mala Milanja, Bele ovce and Velika Milanja to milanski kamen and caverns). The path could really be better marked and more tourist-friendly but that's up to the municipality which invests too little in tourism. The described path from Kamenščina is fine but I recommend to everyone to start in Šembije and go over the above-mentioned peaks to the caverns and return to Šembije via the bike path - yesterday conquered, phenomenal path! (the whole loop with stops and views would take you about 5 hours) I would warn the editors that this peak is not called Volovja reber - Volovja reber is the entire ridge that starts on NW with Milanka (948m) and ends with Vel. Milanja (1099m). The 975 m high peak is called Mala Milanja, which also has the logbook and stamp. It is also marked wrong, as it is marked as Milanka which is less than 10 minutes away.
