Access to starting point:
From the highway Ljubljana - Koper we take the exit Postojna and follow the road ahead in the direction of Pivka, Reka and Ilirska Bistrica. In the settlement Pivka we leave the main road which runs towards Ilirska Bistrica and we continue driving towards the village Knežak. Only a little after Knežak, we come to the village Šembije, where we need to pay attention to the first turn-off to the left. So from the main road we turn sharply left and we continue driving on a macadam road which at first ascends gently, after that a little steeper over karst fields. The road then flattens and brings us to a smaller plateau terrain below Volovja reber. If we intend to do a circular tour on the ridge of Volovja reber, then we can park already here, if not then we drive further, on occasionally a little rougher macadam road which higher brings us to a sharp left turn, in the middle of which a rougher road branches off to the right. We continue on the left "main" road which higher brings us to the next crossroad by which we park.
Route description:
From the crossroad, we go sharply left, on a somewhat rougher forest road which starts to ascend diagonally over more and more panoramic grassy slopes. The worsening road soon turns to the right and almost entirely flattens. A little further, we notice a rougher cart track which from the road branches off to the right (path to Velika Milanja 20 minutes), and we continue straight, on the road which soon brings us to the saddle between Velika Milanja on the right and the peak Bele ovce on the left.
Here the road again turns towards the left (direction west) and after a few additional strides, it brings us by the upper foot of Bele ovce (peak of Bele ovce 5 minutes). The mentioned peak, worse road or already cart track bypasses on the right northern side.
Gentle road which continues with some shorter ascents and descents, a little further turns to the right. Right at the spot where the road turns to the right, we leave it and continue the ascent on gentle slopes of Volovja reber, over which a pleasant footpath runs. The mentioned footpath, which all the time ascends only gently, we follow to the panoramic summit.
From Volovja reber we continue towards the west, on a barely visible footpath which continues on and along the ridge. The path, which at first descends, soon brings us to an indistinct saddle between Volovja reber and Milanka. From the saddle follows only a short, partly pathless ascent through pines.

that little flower is not Velikončnica, but its "cousin" Gorski kosmatinec.

Interesting excursion, especially if you want to cover the entire ridge of Volovje rebri.
For ascent only to Milanka, I recommend the path from Šembije (described under the summit Velika Milanja) or the path from Koritnice, which I also described under V. Milanja, only that instead of going left towards the antenna on the path, you continue straight towards Milanka. But if you reach before the antenna, you can still turn right towards Mala Milanja from which it is only less than 5 minutes descent to Milanka. However, from Milanka the view of the surroundings is quite limited due to the pine forest. The summit is marked with a cairn.
