Access to starting point:
Drive from Villach / Beljak towards Hermagor and further towards Lienz, but only to the village of Reisach. At the bridge over the stream, turn right following the signs for Reißkofelbad and Jochalm. Follow the ascending road first to the place Reißkofelbad.
After the place, follow the road towards the Jochalm pasture. The road becomes macadam. At the first junction, follow the road to the right. On this section, the road is the worst (due to the recent landslide, i.e. 2018).
Later, the road is in very good condition. At all further junctions, follow the better maintained and wider road (i.e. four times left and then once right).
Park at the sharp right bend still near the forest edge and 50 meters below the Jochalm pasture, where the road also branches off towards Gregorihütte (see picture).
Route description:
From the starting point, a short section is walked along the road past the Gregorihütte hut and then along the ascending road to the place where the footpath branches off to the left into the steep slope.
The path winds steeply through the forest, which becomes increasingly sparser, then the path leads to a junction under the wall of the Reißkofel mountain. To the left branches off the shorter steep path to Reißkofel, to the right the longer ridge path and the path to Kleiner Reißkofel.
Turn right onto the path that crosses the slopes to the east. In places the path is somewhat crumbly, soon it reaches a steeper section equipped with steel cables. After the steel cables the path is gentler and soon reaches the Köfele Törl saddle, 2129 m.
At the saddle to the left towards the west branches off the path to the Reißkofel mountain, to the right towards the east to the Kleiner Reißkofel.
Continue to the right and soon the path descends steeply along the steel cable into a small notch and then ascends even more steeply towards the summit. The steel cable leads almost to the summit, on which a cross stands.
