Access to starting point:
From highway Ljubljana - Jesenice we go to the exit Kranj - west and follow the road ahead in the direction of Golnik. Only a little after the village Golnik (more precisely after the village Senično) steep road branches off to the right upwards, which leads towards Zgornje Veterno and Gozd. Soon after the village Zgornje Veterno, we come to a marked parking lot, which is situated on the left side of the road (starting point for steep path), and we continue driving on an ascending road which soon brings us to the cottage Zavetišče v Gozdu. We can park on one of the two large parking lots by the mentioned cottage, or we drive good 100 meters ahead to the parking lot at the church.
Route description:
From the parking lot, we at first walk to the nearby church, and then we come to the marked crossing, where from the right side joins the path from Golnik. We continue slightly left and we continue the ascent on the road which past two successive NOB monuments brings us above the village, where the road changes into wide but steep cart track. After a short ascent, the cart track splits into two parts, and we continue on the left in the direction of the mountain hut Koča na Kriški gori (right Tolsti vrh). Cart track then past the water supply structure and holiday cottage passes into the forest, where we continue in a moderate ascent.
Only a little further signs for Kriška gora point us to the right (straight unmarked path on Kriška gora) on a little more rough cart track which higher changes into relatively steep footpath. Further, we are ascending on a well-maintained path, by which we notice numerous benches and by them names of benches. Higher, the path brings us to a grazing fence and only a little higher it turns to the left, where it is then ascending diagonally. After few minutes of a diagonal ascent, we step out of the forest, where in front of us we already notice a mountain hut Koča na Kriški gori, to which we have only a few dozen steps of easy walking.
From the mountain hut, we return few steps back, and then we continue in the direction of Tolsti vrh. The path ahead is slightly ascending on and by the main ridge of Kriška gora, and then gradually passes on the south slopes, where crosses slopes of Vrat. The path ahead then gradually returns on the ridge, on and by which it then continues for quite some time. Higher, we come on a panoramic secondary peak, from which opens up first closer view towards the summit. Next follows a short descent, and then the path starts ascending steeply on the upper slope of the mountain. Higher, we cross a short lane of a forest and then increasingly panoramic path quickly brings us on 1715 m high peak.
Gozd - Kriška gora 1:30, Kriška gora - Tolsti vrh 1.00.

Since it's not mentioned anywhere, is there a stamp at the summit at all?
TinaPRR4. 10. 2008
Yes - on the pillar (under the "rooflet"), on which there is also a metal box with the logbook, but it's rather poor:-(((
klavdipo4. 10. 2008
Thanks, I'll press it a bit harder then, it'll do!
Tomorrow I'm heading up, hope the weather will be good and not too freezing!!big grin

Yesterday with a colleague we broke trail from Kriška to Tolsti vrh, snow about 100cm, then we met Perot too, so three of us broke trail, as it was much easier, so the trail is now set, good luck

Some Prleks plan to go to Kriško goro and Tolsti vrh on 31.1.2009. What is the path like from Gozd to KG and further to Tolsti vrh? zadrega
lani195726. 01. 2009
We were on Tolsti vrh on Saturday. All tracks were snowed over, so it was quite strenuous to find the right line. And it was sinking in. To KG it's nicely passable, just a bit icy.
kolesar27. 01. 2009
On Sunday there was a hike to KG, so several of us also went to Tolsti vrh and the track was well trodden.nasmeh But now it's snowing again.jezen Zoki suggests you come on 8.2.09, when there is an organized hike from KG to Tolsti vrh. This year already the third in a row, in memory of Štefan Bukovec.
zoki28. 01. 2009
Thanks for the information. On 8.2.09 PD Ljutomer is doing Prešeren hike to Jeruzalem. But we still hope to come to your area on Saturday. I wish for further information.
kolesar28. 01. 2009
Just for information. In our valley absolutely no snow has fallen.mrk pogled On KG and Tolsti some has fallen, but not more than 15 cm. By Saturday the path will probably be trodden, and it won't snow anymore, as they say not until Monday.nasmeh Good step if you come.mežikanje

Today I did this tour. Continued to Mala and Velika Polana. The hut at Velika Polana is open on weekends and the friendly caretakers are happy to chat and serve. Returned via Štajnarica and Ježa back to Gozd. Got my camera back at the hut on Kriška and thank them again via this path for finding and returning it. Today it was long-sleeved weather, luckily the sky didn't cry. Nice tour for warming up for the more demanding ones to come.
mabone16. 01. 2010
Today I did this path, and on the way back I returned via the other southern path, past Zavetišče back to Gozd. Unfortunately there was no sun, it only peeked out briefly when I was at the top...
Otto17. 01. 2010
One day too early. wink
DADA20. 01. 2010
WHAT DO YOU THINK IF WE WENT ON THIS TRIP (KRIŠKA GORA) THIS WEEKEND WITH AN 8-YEAR-OLD CHILD? WE HAVEN'T BEEN HERE YET. HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE, IS IT DEMANDING? WE ALSO HAVE A WEAKER CAR - HOW IS THE ROAD? THANKS FOR THE ANSWERnasmeh
heinz20. 01. 2010
The road to the starting point is mainly suitable even for a "weaker car", not too steep etc. You can start just above the village of Veterno.
To Kriška no problem with children, further on neither, if they have some more stamina.. or, if you've already hiked with them in hills and mountains (especially in winter).. (a bit longer tour).
Otherwise, no special difficulty.
heinz20. 01. 2010
Sorry, the starting point above the village of Veterno is Gozd (I meant the shelter in Gozd, which is a bit higher).
You can get there easily with any car.
p.s. if the 8-year-old is too tired at the top of Kriška, you'll of course turn back. To Tolsti vrh it's another approx. 1.5 hours, or even twice that..
Kriška20. 01. 2010

You drive to the shelter in Gozd on a regularly maintained road, asphalted in the lower part up to the village. There is enough parking space at the shelter (right in front of it and behind it). In your place, I would rather go on the more gradual path that leads through the village of Gozd, rather than the one described here, the so-called "steep path", which is longer, as the starting point is lower.

The path to Kriška gora is often quite icy in winter, I always take small crampons with me so I can put them on if needed. In the upper part, wire ropes are installed along the path precisely because of the iciness for grip and safer walking (not needed in normal conditions - dry path).
With an 8-year-old who is not used to hiking in mountains in winter conditions, I wouldn't go to Tolsti vrh.
DADA21. 01. 2010
THANKS TO BOTH FOR THE ADVICE. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND NOW AT THIS TIME? OTHERWISE WE'LL GO TO DOBRČA, BUT WE'D LIKE TO CHANGE IT A BIT (PREFERABLY WITH A HUT ON TOP) THANKSnasmeh
Kriška21. 01. 2010
The best is to go to "search for trips" and find suitable ones (you see the section on the left side of the screen).

Otto22. 01. 2010
To Kriško gora without problem, since it's not icy currently. It's possible without crampons too. And the road to Gozd is well passable, there's snow on it but no problem with winter tires.
But leave Tolsti vrh for spring.
maremw27. 01. 2010
Today several of us went past Kriška to Tolsti vrh, without problems along the path trampled a few days ago... there is wind-blown snow in some places, but it doesn't bother... the path is not smooth at all*, crampons are never superfluous... winter is here.
kr neki1. 01. 2011
What are the current conditions for the ascent to Tolsti vrh? I'm wondering if I need full winter gear. Thankseek
JUREE2. 01. 2011
The path to Tolsti vrh was nice today,
unfortunately foggy though.
On certain sections there's some ice,
which can be avoided, crampons in my opinion not
necessary, but it doesn't hurt if at least
the small ones are in the backpack.

Bond11. 03. 2011
Yesterday we went with friends to Tolsti vrh. The weather was initially not quite sunny, as it was covered by a veil of clouds. Crampons (the small ones) were veeeeery welcome, as it was very icy in some places - especially the icy slope on the path from the forest towards the nearby (first) target-hut on Kriška gora.
Continuing to Tolsti vrh the path was slippery and snowy in some places, but that didn't significantly hinder our "ascent". The "descent" was similar.
cebelca29. 03. 2011
Hello everyone. Does anyone happen to know what the conditions are like and how much snow is still left on the path to Tolsti vrh? Thanks.
drofebo129. 03. 2011
Dear little bees!
On Saturday, 26.3.2011 we went on a circular route: shelter in Gozd - Tolsti vrh - hut on Kriška gora - starting point. The path to Tolsti vrh is snow-free (path completely dry), to Kriška gora slightly icy (possible without crampons), descent snow-free again. So happily on the trail.jezik

Superb view of Storžič...
katja8731. 12. 2012
On Sunday, 30.12.2012 we went to the summit via this path. The day was beautiful, peaks bathed in the warmth of the sun, valleys in thick fog.

The hut on Kriška gora was open, so there were quite a few hikers.

On the path through the forest towards the hut there is snow in places, in between icy, so I recommend crampons (small ones suffice). Views of the surrounding peaks were magnificent.

Photos from the hike can be viewed on the website of the Matica Murska Sobota Mountaineering Association: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20121230-kriska-gora-tolsti-vrh/foto/20373683
fjold27. 01. 2014
description *easy marked path* does not apply to winter conditions. in snow and ice not so enjoyable, especially if not tracked. From Tolsti vrh directly to Gozd there are sections where you easily trigger avalanches. Otherwise the path is occasionally precipitous and not suitable for vertigo sufferers. Also marks on fallen trees pointing to the sky are not very helpful. Views are really fantastic, if you dare to look...
Darxta28. 01. 2014
Did you have an ice axe and crampons?
slamca28. 01. 2014
Cliffy? Where? From Ježe over Mizica? That part is tricky, true. But it's also dangerous for slips and avalanches.
pemi31. 01. 2014
True, I went alone here in summer, though in the opposite direction from Gozd to Tolsti vrh, the path through the forest is pleasant, as soon as you come out of the forest.. oops.. if you're prone to vertigo.. not pleasant .. I can imagine the situation in winter,... bravo
Daaam31. 01. 2014
Hand on heart, the path is not cliffy. True that everyone has their own limit what seems cliffy to them, however this excursion is also included in professional literature in the category of easy (family) outings...
katty1. 02. 2014
Well, everyone thinks and perceives differently. To me the path doesn't seem cliffy at all, nor to my colleague, although she is quite cautious in our mountains. But in winter conditions the path is quite demanding and especially dangerous for triggering avalanches, as evidenced by one fatal victim of them exactly on this route.
slamca1. 02. 2014
The fatal victim wasn't due to that. The girl slipped, I think on New Year's Day.
slamca1. 02. 2014
The fatal victim wasn't due to the avalanche. Sorry for the mistake.
katty1. 02. 2014
aha... I assumed it was because of the avalanche, since it was in the winter months after all
Petrca5510. 03. 2017
Hello!

Does anyone perhaps know what the trail from Kriška gora to Tolsti vrh is like?
Thanks for the reply.

Best regards.
katty10. 03. 2017
Petrca55, the path is otherwise normal, only the last 20 min, somewhat below Štefanova klopca, completely icy, so chain crampons are mandatory. From the hut onwards quite muddy path, in shady areas ice hides under the leaves, so crampons are definitely recommended. That steepest part of the path is "secured", steps were indeed made, but the question is how it is after two days.

Good luck
ljubitelj gora12. 05. 2019
On Friday when I returned around 18:00 back to the starting point I saw that people were still going up towards Kriška gora, so it's never too late.
Hribolazec8113. 02. 2023 21:12:11
What's the condition of the trail from kriška towards Tolsti?
Thanks nasmeh
sla15. 02. 2023 19:27:41
From the air it looked quite snowy velik nasmeh
Footprints were visible though.
In short, from Kriška gora to Tolsti vrh it's more or less snow.
Hribolazec8115. 02. 2023 22:59:15
I know there's snow, trail condition, for microspikes?
sla16. 02. 2023 06:52:45
We only went to Kriška, up to where midday just poles suffice, then down po luftu.
The lower section from Gozd also looked trodden.
Kafetarca16. 02. 2023 18:33:45
Is "po luftu" an actual trail, or does it mean something else? nasmeh
turbo17. 02. 2023 09:12:56
Po luftu probably means paragliding zavijanje z očmi

Hello

Here, I'm attaching a recording of the entire path to Tolsti vrh, so that those deciding for such a peak can decide more easily and assess your fitness.

Safe steps!
