Access to starting point:
We exit the A2 highway Klagenfurt am Wörthersee - Graz at the Packsattel exit (from the direction of Graz we take the Mooskirchen exit), and then we follow the road towards the town of Köflach and further towards Judenburg and the Gaberl ski slope. We then ascend to a large parking lot by the Gaberl ski slope, which is on the left side of the road, while the Gaberlhaus cottage is situated on the right side.
Parking for up to 24 hours costs 3 € (October 2024).
Route description:
From the parking lot, we continue towards the south, and at the end of the parking lot, the path splits. We go slightly left and continue walking on a drivable macadam road (slightly right, the European footpath E6). On the drivable road, we continue for a few minutes, then go slightly right onto a side road with a gate, leading to wind turbines, from which there is a risk of falling ice in winter. Before the second wind turbine, we go slightly left onto a poorly trodden footpath, which soon returns to the drivable road, and from there, we go slightly further right onto a rougher trail. When we return to the road again, we continue on it only briefly; when the E6 path joins from the right, we go slightly left onto a path that runs alongside an archery range, where leaving the marked path is prohibited. Higher up, the path levels out, leaves the forest, and brings us to the parking lot and the mountain hut Altes Almhaus.
The description and pictures refer to the condition in October 2024.
