Access to starting point:
We enter Hungary via the border crossing Dolga vas – Rédics. We continue towards the cities Szombathely / Mosonmagyaróvár to the town of Körmend, where at the roundabout we turn east towards the city of Veszprém (road no. 8).
We drive to the peanut-shaped roundabout (before the town of Jánosháza), where we turn north towards the towns Sárvár / Sopron. After approximately five kilometres of driving, we will see the left turn-off for the villages Boba and Borgáta. We drive through the village of Borgáta, then after one kilometre we reach the thermal baths Borgáta Fürdő. As soon as we see the bus stop, we turn right and park in the large parking lot next to the baths.
Route description:
From the arranged parking lot by the thermal baths, head south. Orientation is completely straightforward, as our goal is always directly ahead. The path leads along Fürdő út street, which after the junction continues as Királykő út.
When we reach the intersection where going straight is no longer possible, turn left and after about a minute of walking turn right again. Here the path begins to ascend first gently, then somewhat steeper. After a few minutes the incline eases, and we reach the top of the crater rim, where we step onto a well-maintained road.
Continue along the road south to the junction, where the directional arrow marked Királykő directs us right. After a minute of walking, leave the road and continue the path right through the vineyards.
Note: During the preparation of the description (year 2026) this junction was not marked.
Continue the path through the vineyards to one of the wine cellars (klet), where we again notice the arrow for the wall. Bypass the cellar and after a short steep ascent climb to the Királykő wall, which is the main attraction of this volcano. From the wall, only a minute's walk separates us from the highest point of the peak.
Despite the low elevation, the mountain is an exceptional viewpoint due to its location in the middle of the plain. With good visibility, the view opens to the west all the way to the Austrian Alps.
