Access to starting point:
From the highway Ljubljana - Koper we take the exit Divača and follow the road ahead in the direction of the villages Lokev and Lipica. Further we drive through the village Lokev, behind which we soon reach a crossroads where the road to the village Lipica branches off to the right. Here we continue straight ahead in the direction of Italy. Just a little before the border crossing (near the casino) we park on a macadam parking lot. Parking in front of the casino is permitted only to guests.
Route description:
Between the parking lot and the border crossing we will notice a macadam road which branches off to the left from the main road. After a few steps along this road we will notice the hiking markers for Kokoš. We continue along the road, which barely noticeably ascends and after approximately 30 minutes of ascent the path brings us to a marked junction. We continue along the road (right: Kokoš steep path), which already after a few more minutes of walking brings us to the next junction. Again we continue along the road (left: footpath), which ahead starts to ascend more steeply in a few hairpin turns. Higher up the steepness eases and the path brings us out of the forest, where a steep path joins us from the right. We continue straight ahead and the path quickly brings us to the summit of Kokoš, on which stands a mountain hut.

Discussion about the trip Mejni prehod Lipica - Kokoš (by road)
|
| katjuša216. 11. 2008 |
Perhaps it would be better to walk the path along the road, or rather on the well-trodden forest path next to the road, which crosses it several times. The road is namely full of wild Italian motorists who think everything is theirs, including the road. But since the hut keepers at Kokoš support and encourage this, it will remain so in the future. So caution on the road.

I myself have been to Kokoš quite a few times and I must say that I have only positive experiences both with Italians and with the hut keeper. On this occasion, I would like to tell you that Kokoš also has a nice viewpoint, namely on the NW side. It's not very well known, but the view of the Trieste gulf and our Karst is really beautiful, and the Julian Alps with Triglav are also available, not to mention the Carnic Alps.

on the steep path the view is really nice. from the hut in good visibility you can see Triglav itself.

Why walk along the road when we can mostly avoid it! The marked footpath starts at the gravel parking lot near the former border crossing Lipica. From there we go along the forest road for about three hundred meters, where the marked mountain path branches off to the left and continues past the guard tower to the forest road. Here the steep path and the gentle path split. The steep path is correctly described from here on, the gentle path turns left along the road and follows it for about five hundred meters. At the sharp right bend we follow the markers left along the forest path and after about 50m join the mountain path from Škibini, which is correctly described. It is true that the gravel road to Kokoš was unnecessarily marked in the past... Now the markers are erased, and on the new mountain map the route along the road is not drawn... All mountain paths to Kokoš are nicely marked and signposted with mountain signs.Bikers, crossers, off-roaders and even ordinary moto-tourists are really a big nuisance... We are not safe from crossers and cyclists even on mountain paths. Unfortunately!

Perhaps many people (not just katjuša2) think that the hut keeper should maintain order here regarding traffic on (in this case the forest road) that starts in Krvavi potok and leads us over Kokoš to the (former) border crossing Lipica. But in any case, it's not like that. That the hut keeper at Kokoš would encourage users of this forest road to drive on it and support Italian motorists is probably not true. It is true, however, that the staff in the hut are friendly and accommodating, they have good food and reasonable prices. The hut is clean and the surroundings are nicely maintained, which consequently causes traffic of all kinds and forms on the forest road and footpaths to the hut. The hut is also otherwise easily accessible and pleasant, so it is a prepared and desired destination for visitors (not just hikers). Praise both to the keeper and to PD Sežana, who exemplary cares for the facility and the maintained surroundings!

Today we were on Kokoš for the first time. We took the path described by B2, from the former border crossing, past the guard post and headed up the steep path. It's a bit more demanding than by road, but rewarded with wonderful views and fewer hikers. At the top GNEČA. Return by road. No cars, cyclists were considerate. The caretaker is extremely friendly and accommodating already on the first day of the year even to Italians, us Ljubljana people and others despite the unbearable crowd. Paths to Kokoš are detailed in the booklet Gremo peš na kokoš published by PD Sežana, (and other sights too).

On New Year's Day I also visited Kokoš. Triestines brought their pets for a walk and in front of the hut I felt like in a dog park. These dogs are locked in apartments all week, three quarters untrained, unsocialized and of course bark at everything. If there are any 'bad' holidays, rather visit Nanos, where city folks don't gather. Situation on Slavnik is sometimes very similar to Kokoš...

Karletto, I would hardly say that it's better on Nanos than on Kokoš... Take the steep path and you'll meet as many mutts (and poorly trained ones at that!) as you want... It's precisely these dogs that are dangerous, because the animal doesn't know that a triggered stone can injure someone below - or even kill them... You don't have to worry about that on Kokoš despite the masses of untrained and unsocialized dogs...

Best regards to all visitors of our beloved Kokoš Hut. As the hut warden, I can emphasize that we in no way support driving cars up the hill, and when I see "off-roaders" I stop them myself and scold them, because there are many hikers and children on the path. Accidents never sleep and the fines are SEVERE!!!! Otherwise, the Municipality of Sežana could issue a complete ban. PD Sežana and the warden have nothing to do with it and we can only hope that this will be done as soon as possible. We direct cyclists to the road and not to forest paths, but we often notice that they don't follow our advice. We all try to make it nice for all of you and for us on Kokoš. Regarding pets in front of the hut, I'm still looking for smart solutions. Best regards to all!

@Karleto, only paths without a hut at the top remain for us. Those peaks are usually a bit less visited. Not long ago I was specifically watching and counting all those pets. I can say that ours, i.e. Slovenian dogs, were on leashes, the shepherd even had a muzzle on. The wild, barking dogs were really all from Italian-speaking hikers. When I was putting my jacket in my backpack and of course had the backpack on the ground, one of them nicely lifted his leg and left a puddle. The owner just looked away . @gunca, maybe the issue could be solved by putting up signs saying that dogs must be leashed. It won't help much, but it's worth a try. I used to love going to Kokoš, but now because of the mess, not anymore.

Regarding information boards, I basically agree with katjuša2 - but soon everything would be in boards and prohibitions... I absolutely cannot agree that only Italian dogs are annoying, there can quickly be enough domestic ones too... And some self-indulgent person is found in between... Well, cycling on mountain trails is also prohibited by the Mountain Trails Act - and penalties are provided for in that law... And again, a written notice would be needed - and more would be found that we shouldn't do... I suggest that we are all part of nature and behave accordingly, in the hills be an example to those who behave inappropriately and we will have the feeling that we have done something good, for ourselves, for nature and for others around us... We all have to try - and success is guaranteed!

@B2, if there was a sign at the bottom and one at the top, that would be quite enough. And to be clear, dogs are not annoying to me. I'm a lover of small fluffy dogs. The irresponsible owners are to blame. About cyclists.... there has already been a lot written. In autumn they occupied Snežnik and throughout the season on Slivnica. Personally, they were very annoying to me. They rush among people, ring bells and we step aside in fear for our lives, because otherwise we would end up on the balance of some overbearing person who thinks everything is his. More and more I'm looking for lonely hills and peaks, because in nature and mountains I really seek some peace and the beauty of peace. Safe steps in 2012 to all.

@gunca You wrote nicely, if everyone made a little effort, these problems wouldn't exist. @Katjuša2 and @Karletto, a bit more patience.

I would like this to end... Wouldn't it be nicer if we wrote something more interesting and beautiful? I have also contributed something in these comments... The caretakers and PD Sežana are working hard to keep the hut at Kokoš and its surroundings, as well as the access routes and hiking trails to the hut, tidy and clean, which we largely succeed in with our annual clean-up actions... Unfortunately, we cannot influence people (visitors) and their behavior. Putting up signs and warnings - there are signposts along the route with an additional sign for the international hiking trail VIA ALPINA, but let's look at the condition, some signs crossed out, others painted over, damaged, etc... PD Sežana pays for all this... One sign costs 35 EUR... And now let's also prohibit dogs, cyclists - and finally visitors... Come on, let's write something encouraging here and rightfully praise the staff at the hut, PD Sežana and the beautiful surroundings of the hut, and the well-maintained trails to it... I know, it's easier for us to criticize than to praise... Mess would probably be worth criticizing somewhere else... Karletto, I'd like to meet you, you could also reply at ZS...

Patience? Look, I've probably had and cared for more animals than all of you here combined, from parrots and dogs to horses. So I realize that apart from putting up a sign saying "Dogs on a leash" there's hardly any other option. Plus there are foreign-speaking people here. Anyway, I'll sign the book and continue the hike. OK, something encouraging. Tina bravo

Karletto, if what you wrote last were true there wouldn't be so much writing... Live and let live... Signs? From "our" side alone to Kokoš there are five registered and marked hiking trails. From the Italian side there are three more (two you even described poorly here yourself). OK, suppose PD Sežana finds what in your opinion is the only solution and puts up signs. We can put them at the starting points and one at the hut. We'll risk two hundred EUR and it will be done. Approvals aren't needed because we'll put them on our own poles. On the Italian side however approvals and bilingual signs are needed - and who will provide them (in Pesek, Gročani and Bazovica), maybe you? The starting point for Kokoš isn't only at (former) border crossing Lipica! And people with such annoying dogs (for you two) really don't go to Kokoš only from there... And incidentally "Dogs on leash" signs are usually put up by hunting societies, because free-running dogs can chase game and not because of hikers who can pee on their backpacks! I'd really ask for a bit more tolerance and you're invited to Kokoš to the beautiful nature, on well-maintained hiking trails maintained by PD Sežana and to the beautifully arranged mountain hut environment and friendly welcome by its keepers!

Good day everyone, I would like to wish everyone a nice start to the week and hope you had a nice weekend. Everyone chooses their own trips, environment and people. The important thing is that you are satisfied with your choice! We at the hut do our best, but we are aware that you can NEVER please everyone. But I am happy for every comment of yours and we will try to fix the issue with the dogs, because I know that sometimes it's complete chaos up there. I wish you a nice week and hope to see some of you on Kokoš and have tea together. Best regards to all! :-)

I don't understand why those potholes on the road at the starting point before the casino aren't patched...
