Access to starting point:
Leave the Gorenjska motorway at the Hrušica exit and follow the road towards Kranjska Gora. Just before the village of Dovje, a road branches off to the left from the main road leading to Mojstrana (Vrata, Kot and Krmo). Continue along this road towards the Vrata valley and drive through it to the large parking lot near Aljažev dom.
Route description:
From the parking lot, continue along the gravel road closed to public traffic, passing Šlajmerjev dom and quickly reaching Aljažev dom in Vratih.
At Aljažev dom, head right towards Škrlatica, Dolkova špica, Stenar, Križ and Kriška stena (straight to Triglav, Luknja, Bovški Gamsovec, Pogačnikov dom via Sovatna, Stenar, Križ and Razor) onto the path that leads us across the meadow into the forest. The path then ascends first along a gentle track, higher up turning into a gradually steeper hiking trail, which brings us to the bed of a torrent, but we do not follow it for long. Higher up, the path temporarily turns right and ascends steeply through the forest, later beginning to turn left, where we cross a short scree slope, and the path gets closer to the slopes below the mighty Stenar. We soon reach these slopes and ascend through dwarf pines and past individual larches. After leaving the dwarf pine belt, we reach a small valley separating Stenar from Križ, where we ascend briefly, then the marked path turns right (straight to Stenarska vratca and Križ and Stenar via these gates).
A short ascent follows through increasingly alpine terrain, and about 100 meters higher, we arrive at a somewhat larger junction, where the path to Škrlatica continues right, and left branches off to the nearby Bivak Na rušju, Križ and Kriška stena.
Continue right towards Škrlatica (left to bivouac 2 minutes and Križ 1:30).
The path crosses a small scree and then turns sharply right. Next, cross a slightly exposed slope (risk of slipping), after which we reach the pastures below Dolkova špica. The path begins to descend slowly, but only to a steeper section. Here in early summer, we may encounter snow patches (caution). The path then rises again and soon reaches the karst sinkhole Zadnji Dolek, located between Škrlatica and Dolkova špica.
Here at the junction, continue right towards Škrlatica, left leads to Rdeča škrbina and further to Dolkova špica or Križ and Pogačnikov dom. Continue ascending the scree upwards to the entry into the wall. Walking on the scree is quite strenuous as it is quite steep. In the upper part of the scree, the markers direct us right where we enter the secured section of the path.
The path continues along the west wall and is well protected in the initial part with pegs and cables. First, we descend slightly and cross an exposed slope to the south. The path then becomes slightly less exposed and begins to ascend more steeply up the slope where pegs occasionally assist us.
Followed by an ascent with the aid of a cable up a gully. When we reach the top of the gully, we descend slightly and the path brings us to probably the most difficult part. Here, we first ascend steeply with the help of a few brackets, then a traverse across a smooth wall to the right. The path is very well secured here with cable and brackets. Continuing, we ascend transversely for a while, protections becoming somewhat sparser. On the more difficult sections, mostly only pegs assist us. On this section, we can also notice a window in Škrlatica, which many hikers overlook.
The path becomes slightly less demanding and leads us to the ridge where wonderful views open up also to the east, where the nearby Rokavi are very visible.
From here, we have about half an hour to the summit. The path to the summit is slightly less demanding and mostly runs along the right eastern side of the ridge. Soon we see the cross on the summit and only a short ascent remains to the very panoramic summit.
Starting point - Aljažev dom 0:05, Aljažev dom - Bivak Na rušju 2:55, Bivak na Rušju - Zadnji Dolek 1:30, Zadnji Dolek - Škrlatica 1:30.

The trip can be extended to the following destinations: Škrlatica

I have to say that you were very fast, since the pictures were already on the computer at half past one. When did you start from Vrat? The pictures are okay, but it can be seen that the weather wasn't too nice today.

From Vrat I went at three in the morning. I was at the top a little before seven.

I don't believe you were at the top in four hours

| Gost1. 08. 2006 |
I needed 6 hours to the top, but I went slowly and late. But time is completely unimportant to me, just as I think it is to Rok. some people are chasing some records, and I believe they don't want to believe many things... But there is a small difference between not believing someone something, or labeling him a liar

| Gost5. 08. 2006 |
You know what I'll tell you - this about four hours is definitely far-fetched!
| Gost6. 08. 2006 |
but is this supposed to be fast, I was up there already in three hours and seven minutes and I think that anyone who has some fitness and is younger than 80 years old gets there in four hours (if you want, of course), regards mare

Last time I went to Pogačnikov dom and one went from the car at the same time as me. I arrived at the dom in 3:35. This guy who went from the car at the same time as me was at the hut when I arrived. But he had already been to Razor and Planja before that. He says he used 2:40 from the car to Razor. Proven. Regards Uroš

4 hours is really nothing special, but you need a bit of fitness. If we're already bragging, my time is 2h45. The one who says that time is not important to him... why does he then mention HIS walking time? He would also go in 4 hours if he could. Regards

I suggest we meet in Vrata and compete who will be the fastest.

but can I have five minutes head start
| Gost9. 08. 2006 |
You who would like to have five minutes advantage, what is your time? If you are the one who needs 6 hours, you can have 3 hours advantage!

Excellent competitors, but do you know where you walked or better, did you see? I have a similar experience with the path over Prag Triglav, from the dom in Vrata to Kredarica 2 hours 45 min. A week later I went again to see where I had walked at all. Is time really important?
| Gost9. 08. 2006 |
We saw flowers, chamois, hills around us (if you want, I can list them for you), the sun from the top when it had just risen well, and... Will that be enough?

Dear hikers, in the mountains, the nature is so incredibly beautiful that a true hiker sins if he times himself so precisely on the way to the top. Hiker, rather stop, enjoy the beauty of nature and rest your body and soul! In the mountains, you don't need such a pace as in everyday life! Let time stop for you!

| Gost11. 08. 2006 |
Guys, do you always hurry everywhere and boast about it? Bad.

Some go running in the mountains, others go for nature... if anyone wants, compete with me who arrives later at the top :)

I would join you. I would also compete who will be last and have a nice time while walking. I have to see everything, I really don't like speed. Irma

This competitiveness in the mountains with a stopwatch really horrified me. Isn't it more important that we reach our goal (just like in life in general) than the time in which we achieve it. And even more important is that our friends the mountain rescuers don't have work with us. In such racing competitions something can easily go wrong. Hey, youth, take your time and observe around you with open eyes. And the proverb that says "make haste slowly" is not to be forgotten either. Good luck and lots of enjoyment in the mountains.

| Gost18. 08. 2006 |
Can you 'nature admirers', the 'racer', tell me about some enchanting corner along the path that I supposedly overlooked? Perhaps you 'nature admirers' know a beautiful place for rest and maybe a snack under the Stenar wall about 10 minutes below bivouac IV? Have you perhaps heard of Gubno and its beautiful meadows at the top? And the summit above the 'hardest' part of the path to Škrlatica, where you can see into the Kotel cirque with a magnificent background? Or is 'admiring nature' just an excuse for slow walking? You have to work all year to enjoy the mountains! Then a 'race' against the clock isn't what you'd like to present. And one more request: In your 'immense admiration of the surroundings', notice your fellow human who has caught up to you and please let them pass (if there's space for it, of course). Some 'nature admirers' just don't think it's worth it. I wish you lots of enjoyment in the mountains and above all a safe step, since we all love the mountains, right!

| ROBERT18. 08. 2006 |
ACTUALLY, I DON'T SEE THE REASON WHY MY PREVIOUS GUEST "RACER" WROTE SO MUCH WHEN HE COULD HAVE SAID EVERYTHING IN TWO SENTENCES. OTHERWISE, I QUITE AGREE WITH HIM AND IN MY NAME ASK YOU THAT "SNAILS" TAKE HIS SUGGESTION INTO ACCOUNT!
| Gost19. 08. 2006 |
Dear Racer through nature and time! Bravo, you also observe during the haste in walking. But still, you don't notice that tiny flower by your foot and that little animal that just stares at your step. It doesn't even need to move aside because you've already zoomed past. But when you rush up to me, the little snail, slow down your step so I can even move aside for you. I'll gladly do so, there almost under Škrlatica. I'm happy that in the mountains, besides snails, there are also racers. Let's love each other. Irma

Racers in their own way, enjoyers in their own way, nature admirers in their own way.... As it suits anyone. But it's true that "strollers" often talk very loudly among themselves and disturb people a lot. Racers don't have breath for debate.

You're all to be shot, I'm waiting for you under Škrlatica every weekend, whoever first fastest reaches the top won't be back.

| Gost25. 08. 2006 |
To the racer and Robert, who is obviously a big stamp collector (his comments from other hikes): even snails, where do we get to, because the clock doesn't burden us like you two. So no cynicism. Otherwise I have a suggestion for you: to the stadium and stopwatch in hand and strengthen your ego.
| Gost30. 08. 2006 |
Dear hikers, enjoy the mountains and don't compete with each other! Especially: isn't it rude to call an older person (or anyone else) who hikes slower in the mountains a "snail"?! In the mountains, behave respectfully towards nature and people! Live in peace!!! Polona
| Gost31. 08. 2006 |
Polona, bravo! The stopwatch youngsters weren't even born when we were already fast snails. They too will someday be snails (if they live to see it) and feel the same when racers call them snails then. Mountains are meant for everyone. Just tackle them sensibly!
| Gost31. 08. 2006 |
Youngsters approaching Abraham? Hmmmm, thanks for the compliment! But some still prefer (can?!) to step a bit faster up the slope (hill) and have the whole 'lovely day' for wandering... and an extra hillock. I wish you all much beauty in the mountains - we all love them, right!
| Gost31. 08. 2006 |
Škrlatica in the morning... then the whole lovely day ahead... and another little hill... You really are show-offs!!!!!

| Gost3. 09. 2006 |
Take paper and pencil and calculate: at 5:00 from Vrata 3 or 3.5 hours to Škrlatica - one hour enjoying solitude and silence on top... And how much is left until 4 or 6 pm??? Some just don't know basic math
| Gost3. 09. 2006 |
...and some lack culture....
| Gost4. 09. 2006 |
Isn't it nice that at this age one gets a compliment that he's still a youngster? Judging only by statements, dear "youngster" seems closer to twenty than fifty. And if you really are almost Abraham, at this age wisdom should have already met you. And even if you are as good as you pretend, be an example to the really young. And one more question: is someone who races very, very quickly up the mountain better than the one who arrives slower? After all, both sit on top (true, one a bit longer than the other, but still...) Isn't the important thing that in the mountains we learn to overcome ourselves, reach the goal and of course enjoy nature? It has always been my opinion that in the mountains the character of people who walk the mountains is made and shown. That's why I increasingly experience that we no longer know how to greet each other when meeting and fewer and fewer mountain walkers respond to a friendly greeting. Good luck to all: the fast and the slow!
| Gost4. 09. 2006 |
It's true what I wrote 'youngster against Abraham'. But I don't know what 'wisdom should have already met you at this age' is supposed to mean. I always hike 'wisely' (although it might be too fast for some. Why? That's another topic). It never happened to me that I didn't exchange a few words with a slower one or someone coming towards, if there was 'will' on the interlocutor's side. Because I also notice that many don't even greet back. Why is that? Maybe they are used to Šmarna gora (or a thousand similar hillocks in Slovenia), where it's only important to be up so many times a year... and if you leave by the path each time a pack or two of used handkerchiefs (no ad!), who cares. Better condemn those for whom mountains are not a 'heart matter' but a means of affirmation. Speaking for myself: some of us love the mountains and respect them, even if we are a little faster on top than 'proper'. Safe and happy steps to all and lots of joy in the mountains

I've read a lot. From Aljažev dom to the top of Škrlatica in 4 hours is quite realistic, as I myself took exactly that much time and I'm no sports type, I still have some reserve on me "for hard times". My buddies who consider themselves classic hikers needed 3 hours, so PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER. Back it goes much faster, since BEER awaits you at Aljažev dom.

Best regards to all. I'm new here, a bit shy since you are ALL real aces of mountains and pathless terrain. I can only boast of pilgrimages to the mountains when I was still small, up to puberty. Then new goals came, new desires and it took me away. I'm really glad that at 24 I came back to myself. Now for a year I've been regularly going to the mountains and also doing alpinism. So I'm ready for the mountains every day of the week and every month. But the following interests me. Because from this description and your time records I can't figure out what's actually going on. Is a self-belay kit absolutely necessary for this hike, or is a firm step and grip on the fixed cable enough for a safe ascent to the top? I hope I'm not bothering anyone. I'm already looking forward to the snow, which just won't come , so I can finally reach for the desired peaks when mother nature dresses them in a cloak of white powder...
Thanks for the answers

I've been up there several times but with the kit I saw only one. Of course it's possible without, but it's still recommended. But take a helmet with you. Safe steps. Plp

Difference between Škrlatica and Triglav via Prag... Imagine going via Prag directly to Triglav without stopping at Kredarica and then straight down again... I myself needed 6 hours from Vrata... I wasn't rushing and wasn't walking too slowly either... But in nice weather it's a beautiful tour... The last 45 minutes of ascent to Škrlatica is quite some climbing... otherwise everything nicely secured but still not recommended for those afraid of heights... Otherwise to Zadnji Dolek there's nothing exposed anywhere and no climbing...

What is the difference between Škrlatica compared to Triglav from Kredarica?

I'm interested in the technical aspect...

Škrlatica is a shade harder, there are noticeably fewer safety features, sometimes you have to grab the rock instead of the peg, otherwise it's slightly shorter, the approach is of course quite long.

This weekend my dear and I plan to do the following tour: Day 1: Aljažev dom - Pogačnikov dom - Razor - Pogačnikov dom Day 2: Pogačnikov dom - Škrlatica - Aljažev dom. We're just not quite sure if we should do it in this order or reverse - i.e. Škrlatica first. What's your opinion? How is the direct path from Aljažev dom to Škrlatica - I've heard it's not very crowded and quite overgrown. Do I have the right info? Best regards from the mountains.
| triglavski30. 07. 2008 |
I would rather go to Škrlatica on the first day, then overnight at Križke pode. But you need to start early, because this variant is quite long, and afternoon thunderstorms are forecast. The path at least last year wasn't really overgrown, so... but I don't know where the info comes from that it's not crowded, the bivouac is almost always full and on 1.8. there will be even more up there, because it's the anniversary of the cross.
| bobo30. 07. 2008 |
We'll definitely start early and go to Škrlatica and then to Kriške pode. That the path is overgrown, I heard from someone who walked these parts a few years back. Glad it's not the case. Anniversary of the cross? That means there won't be boredom up there.. party!!

No, on 1.8. there definitely won't be boredom on Škrlatica. Also someone from the "known ones" will be up there...

I tried it too. You can get up there in four hours without problems. But the path is technically quite demanding, not for everyone.

Today 10.08.2008 on Škrlatica crowd similar to the crowd on Triglav.?? I agree, you can get there in 4 hours, I arrived in 5 hours but because of waiting for the snail-like movement of a quite large group of hikers. )

Hi. On 3.9. I plan to Škrlatica and wonder if I need safety rope/helmet with me or if boots and fitness suffice? If anyone wants to join me, welcome...
| Klin25. 08. 2008 |
Helmet is mandatory equipment on paths like Škrlatica, Jalovec, Mangart, Špik and similar. Self-protection kit welcome, but not necessarily required.
| Virenque25. 08. 2008 |
At Škrlatica there is a lot of climbing/walking on bare rocks, so the self-belay kit really doesn’t help at that point. Fixed ropes are very few, only where they are really needed.
| SaschaC15. 09. 2008 |
I was on Škrlatica... Just adding that it's highly recommended to take a lot of water with you (especially on a hot day, because the sun shines on the slope all the time), as there isn't a single stream or shelter on the path where you could refill your supplies.

What do you recommend for descent, I'm studying to pull off this tour for the weekend
| fpetel19. 10. 2008 |
This is the shortest and also the easiest descent. In the summit area, this is the only marked path. Currently, the conditions are wintery - Škrlatica is definitely a climbing ascent in winter, (winter is definitely up there).
| barjus7. 08. 2009 |
I'm wondering. Do you go down the same path as up or somewhere else? If you start from Aljažev dom?
| fpetel17. 08. 2009 |
You can extend past Pogačnikov dom. Up you go through Luknja (also possible via Sovatna) and Bovški Gamsovec to Pogačnikov dom and then past Križ to the summit. Down past Bivak IV on the direct path. (I did it in two days - plus Stenar, Pihavec, Dolkovo špico ... you can visit)

Thanks for the info. We went up and down normally. We were just a bit disappointed. To be honest, I expected a bit more action on pegs and cables. When I read the description I expected much more of that, but it's a nice trip, just no view again (clouds), but we ate TORTA on top thanks to the Styrians who were up there )

I went up on Friday nice and easy in 5h. Great weather, extraordinary scenery that makes your heart sing, only one guy who was up there supposedly in 3.5h scared people saying there would be rain and fog so a couple turned back. Some people are really bright. I accidentally met those who turned back in Vrata and they were honestly angry at the guy.

I would go to Škrlatica but that exposed ledge in the pictures gives me a bit of uncertainty. I have no problems with pegs and cables, been to Rjavina, Triglav, Špik, Razor.

I've been to Škrlatica quite a few times and I tell you that that exposed ledge doesn't look even remotely as scary as in the picture. Especially considering what you've already climbed, so go for it boldly. Best regards, B

Because of such responses and debates that take place on forums (unfortunately) one is afraid to even ask anything anymore. Yesterday my friend and I had a nice view of Škrlatica, Žaga and Rokavi. I have to admit it really stands out. But I'm interested (I'll ask despite the fear) if the ridge Škrlatica-Rakova špica-Rogljica-Dolkova špica-Sp. Dolkova špica and to Dovški gamsovec is technically feasible to traverse and the difficulty. Thanks

hello. I was on Škrlatica today. perfect views, perfect photos. I have to admit, I expected more... however, who is not satisfied with little doesn't deserve the great. my fingers itch terribly for the ridge traverse, but I'll postpone it to next year. there are two windows, one at the start of the ascent, the second a bit below the summit. wind was blowing around the summits so the view was phenomenal too. at the beginning the rock was wet (in the forest) the rest was dry, friability is not that extreme. the exposed Polička is not all together long, but it stretches along the ridge. bivak IV is still there... one thing holds true, if you have at least some fitness 4 hours is more than enough. I was up in three hours. the group of alpinists behind me too. so the time on the sign in Vrata holds. 6 hours. both ways. and nice mountaineer's greeting.

Hi! I won't lecture - I'm just a beginner.... I'll just give my opinion on "racing"! Racers and athletes race at competitions... As a beginner, I personally go to the mountains slowly, thoughtfully, admiring the beautiful views and nature... Speed kills unfortunately, so slowly! Good pace jani

Someone who is in good shape walks faster and more easily uphill. I don't know why we should then walk slowly. Even faster mountaineers with good fitness can admire nature and beautiful views. Believe me.... Best regards A.

| ksena10. 10. 2009 |
I fully agree with Anja. If a person is physically well prepared, a fast pace does not mean rushing and racing against the clock, but a way of walking. And such a person can even observe the surroundings better and notice many things that can escape a poorly prepared person who barely moves uphill with all the effort. For me too, slow uphill walking, constant stopping or excessive chatting with others is more torment than pleasure. Especially in winter, when the body cools down quickly with constant stopping and uses a lot of energy to rewarm. Therefore - everyone should adjust the pace to themselves and their abilities, and if walking in a group, of course to the least fit. Good luck and safe to all

I'm interested in how this path compares to the path to Montaž from pl. Pecol via Pipanovo lestev. LP
| turbo26. 07. 2010 |
Nicer The difficulty is not harder than to Montaž. That ladder is really annoying, even if not difficult. Just crowds up there, crowds down there, and some stone falls... And it gets crowded The path to Škrlatica is nicely secured, well laid out, and the secured parts (cables) are relatively short. There you can nicely use a via ferrata set if needed. Perhaps the hardest is the large elevation gain that needs to be done from Vrata.

In the near future, I plan to go to Škrlatica, specifically from Vrata Valley and then descend towards Pogačnikov dom. I'm mainly interested in the path from Škrlatica to Pogačnikov dom? What are the conditions on this path (still any snow) and approximate walking time for "average hikers"? If anyone has walked this path recently, please respond. Thanks.
| turbo27. 07. 2010 |
It will be long, long. From Vrata to Škrlatica it will take about 4h-5h, from Škrlatica to Pogačnikov dom about an hour less. After descending from Škrlatica, a tedious ascent awaits you to Rdeča škrbina below Dolkova špica, from there to Pogačnik it is more or less up and down all the way. Quite strenuous. Regarding snow, I'm guessing, but I think there won't be enough on the path to require an ice axe. With average pace, less than 8h-10h total is not to be expected. Better add an hour. And the weather must be perfect, without afternoon showers or god forbid thunderstorms. No water on the path!, so take enough with you. Good luck!

| novinsekp28. 07. 2010 |
Turbo, thanks for the reply. I'm also interested in the following, namely whether it would be more worthwhile for me to return from Škrlatica along the same path and then at the bivouac turn towards Pogačnik? How is that variant (or do you lose too much elevation there and then have to ascend a lot again)? I'd like to do a two-day tour, namely day 1 Škrlatica, overnight at Pogačnikov dom, next day Razor and Planja and then descent to Vrata.
| viharnik28. 07. 2010 |
If you can't handle the snowfield under Rdeča škrbina - ice axe mandatory, it's smarter to bypass Dolkova špica along the same path to before the bivouac and descend via Kriški rob to Pogačnikov dom. Both the upper and lower paths are quite equal in time. See you and good luck!
| turbo28. 07. 2010 |
NOVINSEKP: Reverse the order, reverse!!! First day a bit earlier to Pogačnik. There you rest and go with minimal backpack (windbreaker, drink) to Razor and Planja. To Pogačnik good 4h, to Razor and Planja including descent also around 4h. Next day then Škrlatica. And either at Pogačnik or some mountaineer will surely know how it is with snow at Rdeča škrbina. If there's snow, go past the bivouac, otherwise up top. Look, with your variant from Vrata to Škrlatica 1700m ascent, then to Pogačnik up and down incidentally at least another 200m. More than two thousand elevation first day. With my variant first day to Razor via Pogačnik around 1600m, no more. And leisurely, with a break at Pogačnik. Next day you're easily at Škrlatica in 4h-5h, then just down. And easier with water too, as you can refill supplies at Pogačnik. In any case good luck and lots of nice things!
| novinsekp28. 07. 2010 |
Thanks a lot for all the advice. I'll definitely think about it. The reversed variant seems very good. Just wait for nice weather and go. Good luck to you too!

novinsekp The path from Vrata towards Škrlatica past the bivouac at Rušje, to Škrlatica, through Rdeča škrbina, on the way also to Dolkova špica and descent, then ascent again through Bovška vratca and Križ then down to Pogačnikov dom, where I also overnighted, I walked last weekend. I must admit it's quite a strenuous tour, as I walked from 5:30 almost to 16:00 when I arrived very tired at Pogačnik but I didn't regret it. To Rdeča škrbina it was possible to go over the snowfield or right next to it, without ice axe and crampons, the path towards Bovška vratca is poorly marked, especially at the fork below the cross, where you have to go right uphill and not straight and left into the valley, where due to smaller snowfield the marks are not visible. Water I really didn't see until descent from Križ towards Pogačnik, then you have water from the pipeline towards Pogačnik right by the trail. And I wish you a safe journey!

Could someone tell me the comparison between the mentioned path and the following: Aljažev dom - Kredarica - Triglav (Tominšek's path) Dom Petra Skalarja - Visoki Kanin (via dolge prode) Koča pri izviru Soče - Bavški Grintavec (direct path) I'm 13 years old, but I've been going to mountains since young. Path strenuousness doesn't worry me, I'm interested in technical difficulty. Thanks in advance for the answer, Vid
| viharnik13. 08. 2010 |
Tominšek's path to Triglav compared to other tours is much more exposed, airy, but well protected. In wet it's especially dangerous for slipping due to polished rock and in summer much more crowded, so harness is not superfluous, helmet is obligatory in rocky highlands anyway.

What about compared to the Goličica wall? Is this path harder, comparable or easier? Last year I marched to Jalovec via Goličica, this year I have Škrlatica planned...
| Klin19. 08. 2010 |
The Goličica wall is harder than the path to Škrlatica. Škrlatica is mainly better secured.
| JusAvgustin19. 08. 2010 |
Above all, you have to overcome a lot of elevation gain (that's the cause of difficulty), because of that the tour can be strenuous, and it drags on. Otherwise, Škrlatica is a "walk"
| 5Xum31. 08. 2010 |
For one more clarification please. In the above route description it says: "The path continues to climb only briefly, then levels out and leads us to a larger junction, where we continue left towards Pogačnikov dom and bivouac on Rušje (right Škrlatica)" So at this junction you need to turn LEFT, while RIGHT is the path to Škrlatica? Isn't there only one path to Škrlatica (at least to the summit)? Which path would you take if you continued RIGHT at this larger junction?
| Avanturistični kozorog31. 08. 2010 |
Right Škrlatica (only one hiking path leads up); Left Bivouac on Rušje (circular path back to Vrata); or straight to Pogačnik. Steady step and good orientation (map in hand).
| 5Xum5. 09. 2010 |
Well, if anyone asks me, I would say the path description is wrong. "The path ahead climbs only a short time longer, then the path levels out and leads us to a larger junction, where we continue left towards Pogačnikov dom and bivouac at Rušje (right Škrlatica). The marked path bypasses the bivouac on the right side and then steeply ascends for a short time behind it. Further on the steepness eases, the path leads us through karst terrain full of sinkholes, cracks and pits. Beautiful high mountain path that offers nice views mainly to the surrounding peaks, and higher leads us to the next junction. We continue right towards Škrlatica (left bivouac 2 minutes and Križ 1:30)." At the only marked junction in this part of the path, you need to turn RIGHT. That is the junction 50m next to the bivouac. Nowhere do you turn LEFT towards Pogačnikov dom.

Last week (9.7.) we were up there, no snow on the path, we did go back the same way though. Wonderful weather and views, in the wall quite strong gusts of wind downward, summit calm and super panoramic. Then you hurry down and all the time you see Aljažev dom v Vratih, where after a couple of hours of walking you have the feeling it's always the same distance away. But well-deserved break with view of Stena.

Hi mountaineers Does anyone have experience with the path Pogacnikov dom - Skrlatica - Pogacnikov dom? Elevation difference on the path, or how long does it take? I'd like to go to Skrlatica after all, but unfortunately even from Aljazev dom, which is supposed to be the easiest path (6 hours, 1800m difference, all that x2) is already too much for my knees for one day I'm interested in any good idea, advice, how I could get up there on a shorter path, or how to split the path for more days. Thanks everyone in advance

Nice tour, I really laughed at all the comments about times. I myself needed a good 6 hours up and down, but I didn't have to rush for that, I took time for photos, chatting with a couple of passers-by. Two were simply phenomenal. For 20 euros I'd buy a pixel pir The view was soon interrupted by clouds, but it was just fine that it didn't burn me for the descent. And on the top I met the same mountaineer as a week ago on Triglav.

Hello, I have a question, would this route be suitable for children aged 12 and 13. In summer we would like to visit Škrlatica. They have all the gear: harnesses, via ferrata set and helmet. We've already been to Triglav three times. Once from Zadnjica, from Kredarica and Planika. Please tell me if it's appropriate and how long it would take. You should know that we did all three ascents to Triglav in one day, we didn't stay overnight anywhere, so fitness is not an issue. Regards
| Daaam21. 03. 2012 |
If fitness is not an issue (Triglav and back in one day) then probably no problems here either, similar elevation gain.. just take plenty of fluids because there's no hut in between... and as early a start as possible.. because the sun appears quickly... technically it's not much harder than Triglav.. (my opinion)
| lepenatka21. 03. 2012 |
Probably fitness is not an issue... but the path to the actual ascent drags on. It's less protected than Triglav. Smaller children are usually roped on descent. Caution is needed everywhere and no helmet no go. Rocks fall, especially if crowded. Bivak IV is usually occupied by foreign tourists Safe steps.
| merkur22. 03. 2012 |
It's not really sensible to compare Škrlatica too much with Triglav. But if at all: the main difference is in the (lesser) protection and (greater) friability of Škrlatica. Fortunately, the crowds on the Škrlatica route are much smaller than on Triglav. In connection with children, it's probably sensible to note that the protection on Škrlatica is not only less, but above all different; there are much fewer chains, so the use of via ferrata sets is very limited. The child must either be roped to an experienced companion (especially on descent), or capable of occasionally overcoming exposed friable ledges just by gripping sometimes unreliable rock. The route can sensibly be divided into two parts in the summit, "climbing" section. The first, from the scree below the wall to the ridge, which runs in more compact rock and is also somewhat better protected, and the second, continuing to the summit, which leads across a system of open friable ledges. Of course, no need to emphasize that descent from this mountain is more demanding than the ascent. And one more thing: if anywhere, then here especially it holds that for a long tour with children, choose a period of dry stable weather. Food for thought. I know quite a few parents who prepare for harder ascents with children by one of them going on a reconnaissance to the unknown mountain beforehand. I know, time is always (a bigger) problem, but after all it's about the safety of our children ... Another option is joining a trip of some mountaineering society, which of course has its advantages and disadvantages. Petruša, I wish you a good decision, nice day and happy trails to all!

| dprapr26. 03. 2012 |
Maybe it would be better not to comment, but something here doesn't make sense to me. If the children have "conquered" Triglav three times via different paths and each time in one day, I see no obstacle for them. Namely, the main obstacle for the ascent to Škrlatica is precisely that the ascent must be done in one day (unless relying on sleeping in the bivouac). Of course, it's advisable to choose a less hot and sunny day, as on this path you are exposed to the sun's rays all day and don't forget a supply of drinks. In my opinion, the problem is that as parents you doubt the success of this tour because you don't know it. Therefore, my advice is to follow the above suggestion and have one of you scout the tour beforehand. Then there will probably be no more hesitation. Given the children's age, I recommend securing them with a prusik during the traverse in the upper technically demanding section, if necessary. Best regards and lots of enjoyment!

Yesterday my friend and I went up for the first time and we didn't know the path. We walked quite well and had some breaks. When you go up for the first time and don't know the path, you have to be especially careful, especially in the wall where you can get lost past the ledge. Still, we got up in about 5 hours, which I think is perfectly fine, it could have gone faster, but I'll say it like this; for whose damn sake anyway. Best regards and in general it was a nice and quite strenuous ascent, I'll definitely remember it :-).

Has anyone already recommended that it's really worth it? The path there is anything but cool, below 2000m it will be like in a Bograča cauldron during the day .

Start early, then there won't be problems, just take a bit more fluids with you than usual. In the shade at around 1500 meters it's pleasant during breaks. I was today on the other side from Krma to Vernar and it was already decently warm before 9.00 (but hot in the mountains can't be, hot is now in Ljubljana 36 degrees Celsius, with us as much as in Kranjska Gora 30 degrees Celsius) during ascent. Descent similar. All this took a lot of energy from me just because of sweating, got tired faster, so only 1 peak and back, in between longer breaks in the shade. best regards

It's nice already in the shade, where you sit and rest. But more than 1500m of uphill walking awaits you and the path is still on the south side, so the sun shines on your head for a few hours, that's no longer any pleasure, I've been hiking in the mountains for a long time and prefer to avoid strenuous tours in such heat. Good luck!

Last Sunday it was scorching hot, next week it will probably be the same. If you start from Vrata at dawn it's a great hike, if you're a sleepyhead though I wouldn't imagine it... The remnants of the snowfield are useful for refreshment.

Hello! On Saturday 3.8. we're heading to Škrlatica. I'd like your opinion on whether you recommend just the via ferrata set. I'm an amateur hiker 51 years old. Been to Triglav and so on... How really difficult is this trail? Thanks Best regards Mojca
| Keko31. 07. 2013 |
The trail to Škrlatica is somewhat more difficult than the one to Triglav. It's quite long with a lot of elevation gain, mostly in the sun if you don't start early. The fixed cables are sparingly placed, quite a bit of free climbing without protection. You won't be able to use the via ferrata set much, as there are very few cables, about 20 meters. If you're not very experienced yet, I still recommend it, as there's a quite steep descent on fairly smooth rock at the first cable.
| jax31. 07. 2013 |
Mah, I think the difficulty of the trail to Škrlatica is in the same range as some Tominšek's - so not easy, but not a bogeyman either. SVK not necessary, helmet is a good idea though. Elevation gain is of course 100 meters less than to Triglav But I really warn you about the heat - I'm not sure if this Saturday is the right day for this trail, it could be hellish.

I was up there on 20.7.! With a buddy we started just before 5am from the valley, because we already knew how hot it would be. We hurried quite a bit, so we were at Aljažev dom by eleven. The last descent from bivouac IV to the hut was scorching like hell, humid in the forest (there had been rain recently, lots of moisture), drank 4 liters of water, and still ran out!
| mojčman31. 07. 2013 |
Keko, thanks for the tips. also to jax. I know about the helmet too, need to take enough fluids because heat worries us. We plan to "start" from Vrata around 3am of course. There's also the option just to the bivouac if it's too much or to Dolkova špica.

The self-belay kit is recommended on this trail, helmet is a good idea. But everyone knows what is actually needed for this tour.

| ms_primoz1. 08. 2013 |
mojčman - you don't need a via ferrata set, because you have no problems with height and because there is very little length of cables. Pay the most attention to the ridge and the descent along the ridge from Škrlatica. Take at least 5 liters of fluids with you (not juice, but water with additives like ISO star...). I drank all the fluids, namely 6.5l, and when I got to the car I drank another liter of water. Regarding the helmet, it's a shame we even discuss it. That's self-evident! Good luck and safe steps.

Well, let me report on the course of the hike to Škrlatica. Unfortunately due to hellish heat we abandoned the idea of climbing to Škrlatica although there were quite a few hikers who went up. So our goal was the bivouac at Rušje. For amateurs that was enough too as this path is demanding since it ascends steeply. Otherwise, it didn't present difficulties to me but to the other participants. We were all satisfied that we reached the goal. We supplied ourselves sufficiently with liquids so at least that wasn't a problem. In Aljažev dom, beer tasted great of course. I think we also made the right decision based on your advice, for which I thank you all once again! Škrlatica maybe some other time or not at all.

Yes yes sorry Škrlatica is meant. Well better to take it and carry it in the backpack than leave it at home so thanks.

| _sandra_5. 08. 2013 |
@Sopke: whoever has problems with heights wouldn't go to Škrlatica anyway.. otherwise the via ferrata set won't help you in the wall if you have it in your backpack.. either you wear it or don't carry it with you.. it's the same as having an ice axe in your backpack and crossing a snowfield..
| Daaam5. 08. 2013 |
sandra...it's not the same... you can still put it on all the time if you have it in your backpack ..to everyone asking if you need SVK or not (applies to all paths) I advise to take it... because if you were sufficiently confident and informed, you wouldn't ask if you need it or not..
| _sandra_5. 08. 2013 |
@Daaam: I agree, I think you know what I was hinting at.. I wouldn't ask about such things on the forum, everyone knows what they need, if it's your first time somewhere it's especially good to be even more cautious.. definitely better to have it with you if you're not sure whether it'll work without or not..

Yesterday three of us went to Škrlatica, it dragged on and was strenuous, even though we hike a lot in the mountains. But I was very surprised that there were a lot of people also going up, there was quite a crowd at the top and on the fixed cables. But the weather was very nice and the views.
| sam-zee21. 08. 2013 |
On Saturday we plan a hike to Škrlatica, if the weather holds. When do you recommend departure from Vrata? In summer they go up already at 3:00, so now probably we can go 4:30 or a minute earlier? Given the weather it will - if at all - probably need to plan to be back in the valley by 15:00.
| Keko21. 08. 2013 |
If you are average fast hikers, departure at the time you mentioned would be fine, given that there won't be excessive heat. Most need 7 to 8 hours up and down, depending also on breaks.
| Jure8721. 08. 2013 |
For now, if you don't want to hike in too much darkness in the morning and given that it won't be excessively hot, a suitable start time from Vrata would be 5:30. That way you (if average hikers) will be at the top at latest 10:30.

| Keko21. 08. 2013 |
Yes, I would agree with Jure.

| Becar21. 08. 2013 |
Hey guys, for average-speed hikers and those determined to hike safely in the mountains, the time here on the hill and the time on the sign in front of Aljažev dom is quite realistic, that's 6 hours for the ascent, for the descent one to two hours less. Not to mention guidebooks, where I found even 7 hours 30 min for ascent. Don't boast too much and don't race too much, because this weekend I saw with my own eyes how one such racer, shortly after carefreely overtaking me, flipped under Štruca and spent 10 minutes putting himself back together. You can start collecting signatures for new signs with your times. If you succeed, maybe.
| Keko21. 08. 2013 |
To achieve this time that I mentioned, there's no need to race. Moving at an average speed of 1.5 km per hour, slightly less uphill and a bit more downhill, I think it doesn't represent racing for anyone, even though it's in the mountains. These are the times I most often hear from mountaineers who have already been to Škrlatica. Of course, some arrive in much shorter time, others need much more, each according to their abilities. That the times on the signs are somewhat longer is quite right, so that the tours are not underestimated.
| Becar21. 08. 2013 |
Then you move in circles that are not indicative of the average hiker's time. Such people better keep your personal timings to yourselves, for your own satisfaction. Because they can mislead someone.
| JusAvgustin21. 08. 2013 |
A lot has already been written and more will be on this "racing" topic. My opinion hasn't changed. Everyone according to their abilities, whether turbo or snail. No one has the right to tell someone else that they are a rocket or slowpoke! Of course in walls it's different. There speed can cost you dearly, whether too slow or too fast!
| Keko21. 08. 2013 |
@Becar, I didn't state my own timings, further discussing this matter, I think it makes no sense.

| george21. 08. 2013 |
Slowly you get far, too good luck
| Becar21. 08. 2013 |
I'd just add that talking about classic speed (in km/h or m/s or anything like that) in the mountains makes no sense, as everyone should understand that this speed is highly dependent on the slope. Therefore, a much more relevant figure is the vertical meters per hour achieved, which for an average hiker is about 300 m/h (this is wisdom passed down among hikers from generation to generation). If we calculate this for the elevation difference Aljažev dom - Škrlatica, we see that the times on the signs are very realistic.
| Keko21. 08. 2013 |
Becar@, I'd just add this. Many a wisdom no longer holds for a long time, I think this one doesn't either. Especially not for the average hiker who sets off for Škrlatica.
| sam-zee21. 08. 2013 |
Thanks for the tips. The weather worries me a bit, because personally I'm not exactly a blue racer, and at 3 pm there's already a droplet drawn on that side. We'll see. Otherwise, I reckon I could make it up in 4.5 to 5 hours.
| Branee21. 08. 2013 |
Becar, what you're stating are times for group guiding. When I learned it was like 300 vertical meters group, individual 400. On descent group does approx 400-500 per hour while individual 500-800.
| Becar21. 08. 2013 |
Aha? Well then we were taught differently. I will still swear by the official time markings, of course you can hike in the mountains however you like. In conclusion, I'll just add the words of Pavle Kemperle (I hope he wasn't taught wrong). "The mountains give nothing for free. Dangers lurk everywhere for those who come to their realm out of presumption or record-breaking. But those led to the mountains by true love, they welcome and richly reward the effort endured."

| Jure8723. 08. 2013 |
I apologize if my post upset people who are overly concerned with numbers. To explain the term 'average hiker': when I started hiking, I used to take times measured by the signs for ascents, sometimes even more - at that time I was below average - beginner (beginners must seriously follow the times on the signs + have a reserve and anyway their first mountain goal shouldn't be something like Škrlatica). Now, with a few dozen Slovenian two-thousanders behind me, I consider myself an average hiker and I always arrive a bit faster than the signs.
| Jure8723. 08. 2013 |
''Replica'' to the 300 vertical meters/hour rule: Zadnja Trenta (960 m) - Jalovec (2645); Elevation difference = 1685 m, (on the path approx. 1700 m). On the new sign in Zadnja Trenta it says 5h to the top of Jalovec. That means: 1700 vertical meters / 5 hours = 340 vertical meters/hour. According to the sign.

| telemah23. 08. 2013 |
1.48 h from Vrata to the summit
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Well, that's it. A couple dozen meters more or less. Still, it's closer to 300 than 400 m/h. If we consider the 6 h mark on hribi.net and from the guidebook I just opened Čudoviti svet Julijskih Alp, we get 283 m/h, so the golden mean is exactly 300 m/h. In the case of Škrlatica from Vrata, it's like this. According to hribi.net and the sign in Vratih, we get 300 m/h both times, according to Čudoviti svet Julijskih Alp we get 240 m/h. According to Keko's thinking, we do UP AND DOWN in the same time as listed only for UP in Čudoviti svet Julijskih Alp. Since nothing in the accompanying text of the mentioned guidebook says it's a guide for the inexperienced and since the author has traversed all our Alps lengthwise and crosswise, the above times seem very misleading to me.
| Alesko197123. 08. 2013 |
Time is completely relative. Anyone who minimally takes care of their fitness and does at least 1000 vertical meters per week (at least 3x per week some 300+ meter hill...) will get to Škrlatica without a problem in just over four hours or even faster. And they will ENJOY it along the way. Someone who goes to Škrlatica directly from coffee will pant uphill for 8 hours and get nothing out of it. And here I claim that the latter endangers himself more than the first. Everyone has THEIR OWN watch, everything else is nonsense. Someone easily in 3 hours, another with agony in 7h... Again, the donkey's shadow is being fought over.

| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Of course, I agree. However, we were talking about the AVERAGE hiker. I increasingly notice that reality is something else than the contributions here on the forum. I conclude that more than 99% of average hikers do not write on this forum (that's also my observation when talking directly to hikers on the trails). But they gladly and extensively write about whether someone reached the goal 2 hours earlier, etc. I don't know if you realize that when it comes to over 1500 m elevation difference, people still overnight a lot in huts, shelters (I never do), because it's too much for them in one day. Do you realize how many there are? I went to Skuta recently, do you know that Cojzova koča was full of candidates for overnight stay? Some see only themselves and a few racing friends with whom you THINK you are setting new standards in hiking times.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
In 2002, three students also went to Škrlatica in 4 hours, so we were still swimming in Lake Bled all afternoon. I remember well how it looked . So I know well that this is not the time of the average visitor and no one will convince me otherwise.
| Alesko197123. 08. 2013 |
For me, the "average hiker" is not someone who goes to the mountains twice a year for a trip, that might be a tourist. Times have changed. People take better care of themselves, do sports, equipment is top-notch... If someone calls himself an "average hiker", I hope not because he went to Triglav in August and that's it for this year. Otherwise, becar, have your right, that counts for something too.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
True, times are changing and there are more and more who in the mountains only look at GPS tracks, stopwatches, measure heart rate (how much longer they can time before stroke hits) etc. I didn't count these in the average, because for me that's not a hiker at all. No hard feelings.
| Keko23. 08. 2013 |
@Becar, I think you're exaggerating a lot by labeling everyone who arrives a minute earlier than indicated on the signs as racers. I just gave my opinion, which is not necessarily completely correct, and your proof that only you are right is pointless. But I learned something again and I will never state times again. Yours will hold, that up takes 7.5 hours and down say 6.5 hours, so total 14. Keep enjoying and it's really strange that you never overnight on your tours.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Keko, when we went up in 2002, we smoked everyone behind us. They said: guys where are you rushing to, what's the hurry Now I still arrive at the goal in the indicated time, or sometimes a bit earlier. Even more are those who arrive half an hour - an hour later, those who overnight, not to mention those who turn back, whom I didn't even have in mind. In all guidebooks, for Škrlatica, Jalovec, Razor, Triglav... it will say very long full-day tour, overnighting recommended. There, that's the average based on my experiences with hikers.

He, he, he.... According to your definition you were therefore a racer, since you overtook everyone, but you got caught in your own trap.
| JusAvgustin23. 08. 2013 |
Someone once wrote: "the others were slowpokes compared to me, I overtook them like a Ferrari" Many up here would benefit from a crash course in mountaineering culture! These are all serious full-day tours and if someone underestimates them it's their business, as long as they don't endanger other participants with their behavior! Times are changing, human stupidity remains the same. Whether you resent it or not. The facts remain indisputable!
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Keko, Keko... We were talking about the average hiker and average times. What does that have to do with me in my student years? Yes and looking back, we were young, fast and inexperienced then (fast and bold ). Were we average? No. Back then hikers wouldn't have called us that.

Becar, what if you calmed down a bit, you're everywhere . Or do you think you write such good posts in this forum that we have to read you all the time? Well, I think it's far from that, maybe I'm not the only one

@Juš Juš, here I'll quote you; your post on the Škrlatica topic from 2009: "... so the time on the board in Vrata holds. 6 hours. both directions..." You won't say that you endangered anyone with that or underestimated the tour? Have you been on some crash course since then? No hard feelings. And yes, times are changing. When Zvone Andrejič and Toni Smolej started using trekking poles in the early 70s they marked it as "dangerous" in Planinski vestnik...
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
...and that conclusion regarding trekking poles still holds
| JusAvgustin23. 08. 2013 |
I still claim that, the only difference was that I went completely alone and only met hikers on the descent who were rushing to the top. I also didn't overtake on the right on the secured section of the path. And I didn't underestimate the tour, on the contrary I have great respect for this mountain. I've been on many other crash courses, not just "Ciciban Planinec" There they teach you culture and proper hiking in the mountains. No hard feelings! Everyone should express their opinion, but it should stand for it! That got on my nerves here and still does. But you get used to everything bad Nice day! Oh, btw, I don't use poles, I don't know about that.
| Alesko197123. 08. 2013 |
For climbing which you practice you don't need them either, but to Škrlatica up to the wall entrance most find them useful, even more on the way down. The debate is about the majority and not about YOU. With times it's like this - most signs in valleys are written VERY conservatively. And the average guy completes them in 70% of the stated, many even sooner. Let's not reinvent the wheel. With those above the tree line it's different, generally times hold. With this I conclude, arguing with people who change opinion as needed is pointless.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Poles can be very dangerous for several reasons (this also applies to the path to Škrlatica). Hikers can't fold poles when transitioning from easy path to climbing and due to insisting on poles accidents happen (we saw a hiker fall who was fumbling with poles at the chains on Mangart right in front of us, luckily without serious injuries). Poles can also be dangerous when folded and sticking out of the backpack. If there's an overhang above you, you can hit it with the pole, which with carelessness can be enough for loss of balance. The pole can slip from your hands especially if you don't use straps, you try to catch it and can get injured. It's also dangerous if you use the strap, fall and the strap breaks your wrist. So some 40-year-old advice isn't yet for the trash and shouldn't be underestimated.
| Alesko197123. 08. 2013 |
Poles are NOT dangerous. The one who doesn't know how to use them and fold them into the backpack in time is dangerous.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Well, I assume that PV didn't mean that the stick in your hand will explode.
| Alesko197123. 08. 2013 |
No. If you don't use them because of that, you're mistaken. They won't explode. But if you ask me, they save you ca. 25% of energy in your legs uphill and extend the lifespan of your knees downhill. They are meant for WALKING. Climbing with them in your hands doesn't work. Neither Smolej nor Andrejčič did that.
| jax23. 08. 2013 |
No, the claim that poles in the mountains have only been used since the 70s is of course not true. It's enough to look at some photo of Pipar or perhaps one of Frischauf's guides to the Kamnik Alps. They have been used, so to speak, forever, of course in various forms. It is true, firstly, that I often notice people using poles even where it's no longer safe, and secondly, that they can't walk without them at all. That's why I still advocate the thesis that for a shorter trip, you can go without them, so you don't completely lose the sense of balance.

| stefjunior23. 08. 2013 |
I'm reading these posts and just smiling along. Some arguing about who does how many v.m/h. The important thing is only that the person is psycho-physically prepared for the trip they undertake. Whether they use poles or not, whether they are faster than others or not is their business. Hiking has become a Slovenian sport and here's the problem, because people are not informed. Culture/ethics in Slovenia is at a very low level and that's really sad. Throwing various trash, not to mention what hikers leave behind in bivouacs (which are supposedly meant for alpinists) and then there are also, as I read the posts, comments that if you're faster than the timetable you're a racer and endanger the safety of yourself and those around you. WHAT? Is it perhaps just your wounded ego? In conclusion, I'll say this to all you "super hikers" you think you are, 300 v.m/h is very very very bad and I recommend some training!!!

Yes, @stefjunior, I completely agree with your comment.

| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Stefjunior, your statement is already contradictory in itself. Do you ever read what you write? In the first paragraph you say speed isn't important, then read your last sentence. I can only laugh too. But let me tell you fast ones something. In general, you don't realize that your speed also contributes to triggering rocks, because safe walking and fast walking don't go hand in hand in high mountains. I've studied you well and I've already ruined some carefree fast walking day for some. I think next time such a savage triggers a rock at me, I'll give him a bit "behind the ears", because you've made me even angrier with such statements.

Aha Becar, so everyone who walks fast is dangerous... Since this leads nowhere, I call on the administration to delete this "trash", i.e. about 45 last comments, including this one .

Exactly as you wrote urbancek. Eeeee see, you hit the point. Everyone who walks fast in the mountains is dangerous. If not to themselves, then to others. I don't remember anyone who walks patiently and thoughtfully triggering a rock at me, nor have I ever triggered one. Rocks are triggered by racers. Eeeee that's it. That's my experience. And we've come to the point. Otherwise, stand by your statements, since you've already written them, why delete them.

I have 20 years of hiking in the mountains behind me, I have walked practically all marked two-thousanders multiple times, as well as a lot of mid-mountain terrain, and I consider myself an average mountaineer (I don't know where some get the idea that I consider myself a super mountaineer). In this time, I haven't injured myself or anyone around me, not even put on a single band-aid in these years. I have never triggered rocks onto anyone. I am always well prepared for hikes, always complete them in one day, weather or night never surprises me, I never miss gear that I forgot at home, etc. Therefore, I am convinced and know for myself that I hike safely. But in these 20 years, I have seen a lot, met all kinds of mountaineer types. I can quickly see which category some of you here belong to. But I won't say it, because it would be too ugly for the forum, and I'll stop here.

Becar how can you be a mountaineer for 20 years already, when just a bit higher up (today's debate) you claim you were young and inexperienced in 2002 ..as for triggering rocks..during my visit to Oltar I crept down like on eggshells..but still sent such a rock into the depths (of course unintentionally), that I felt quite sick when I thought what would happen if someone was below.... it simply happens sometimes ..and it doesn't matter if you're fast or slow..
| Macesna23. 08. 2013 |
Triggering rocks has nothing to do with whether you're fast or going slowly.
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Oh, it does matter and a lot. Just don't tell me who triggers rocks most often. Those who jump from rock to rock like chamois, with IQ somewhere there too. It's interesting how some of you recalculate years just to blacken me a bit, but math gives you trouble, just like handling my words does. And it doesn't go and doesn't go, yet you still look for something to fan Kek's windmill a bit, but from all that it's just one stinky puff. Sometimes I don't know who is worth explaining anything personal to. So roughly for the bad but persistent mathematicians, I'll say that in 2002 I was a student (which year I won't say on purpose, so you'll have to consider probability intervals too). But I was hiking in the mountains much earlier, in my teenage years, with parents, friends and we didn't go wild. The wild tour was Škrlatica 2002 and Jalovec a year later 2003, that was a life experience that you don't hike in the mountains like that. Some of you will never learn that. From that group onwards I no longer hike with them, well I think they quit then, I hiked alone from then on, or with calm mature people, last few years with my partner... ... this year we experienced on Triglav while descending the ridge a racer "over the back", we were all walking in a column, someone who probably like many here likes to boast about time, just started overtaking the column. As I was just about to step left, my partner pulls me strongly to the right. On the left that racer was overtaking me, I didn't see him, it could have ended very badly, especially for him, and I would have him on my conscience. Then after 20 m he came to a big jam, couldn't overtake anymore, started looking at the watch, his day was ruined... And now that he didn't make it up and down in 5 hours, but in his mind he's already preparing how to boast somewhere. Oh, how allergic I am to such people.

Will there be bad weather again? Interesting reading: 1. "that for a shorter hike you can go even without (poles), so as not to lose the sense of balance." 2. "Everyone who walks fast in the mountains is dangerous." 3. "Racers trigger rocks."

Well, I do like to head to the mountains, IN MY OPINION! I go up half or less of the marked path, at the top I enjoy the view, why? Because at the top the view is better than on the path itself, on the path I focus on the path and don't daydream around, and I build some fitness.. Walk as it suits you and don't overdo it, BUT don't hinder others!!!!! Everyone has their own lifestyle, one drives BMW, another VW, some Renault. And take back that chamois run and dislodging rocks of yours, because it's not true! Every 7th tour a pebble flies behind me and I warn loudly about it and glare. Last time on Mangart I was walking behind some Germans (hail hitler and such), first 20 min of inconsideration, then surprised looks when I overtook them past the wall quickly, ah, and to top it off, I spent 20 whole min dodging avalanches from under their feet. So such things really annoy me, ah and etiquette.. Is it so hard to say hello, good day? Something at least...
| Becar23. 08. 2013 |
Here, another special case, "past the wall beyond the pegs overtook" Hats off! That's it, when a person doesn't even realize they're dislodging rocks and that it's wrong. Exactly such types are the real ones, speed demons, full throttle from the start, end, so that sand flies into eyes behind you. Most often rocks are dislodged precisely in such situations. Because the path is trodden, on the edges rocks wait to go down. There are quite a few such specimens, yeah yeah.

On Saturday, 31.8.2013, we set off on this path to the top of Škrlatica. We did a circular tour (2 days): Vrata - Bivak IV na Rušju - Škrlatica - Rdeča škrbina - Dolkova špica - Križ - Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih - Vrata (čez Sovatno). The first day we hiked 14 hours, so on the second day we only descended back to the valley. Otherwise we planned to conquer Stenar on the second day, but Sunday's unexpected morning rain drove us to the valley. The tour was quite strenuous, but the beautiful views outweighed all the effort Pictures from the hike can be seen on the website of the Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20130831-skrlatica-dolkova-spica-kriz/aljazev-dom-v-vratih-1015m/21051956

Hmmm... I won't guess on your first question because I don't know (tomorrow towards the end of the precipitation, the snow line will drop to 1500m). But for your second question I'll try to answer... maybe at Škrlatica? In the past you could buy it at Zagreb train station LP B

We walked the tour on Saturday. To Bivak IV and to the entry into the wall there is still some snow, but it's not problematic. For the tour winter equipment is not necessary. For the variant through Rdeča škrbina winter equipment is mandatory due to steep snowfields.

Probably someone who has been or will go to Škrlatica soon. I myself will go up on 23.8.14, firstly if the weather is right, and I would really like to know how it is with the snowfields - are crampons needed? I'm asking because yesterday I was over Plemenice to Triglav and there is still a lot of snow up there, not on the trail itself, but below Kredarica and all around under Triglav. thanks
| živa sraka9. 08. 2014 |
And one more thing, please, let someone who knows write to me - should I go straight up to Škrlatica and then to Kriške pode to sleep or do the opposite, first to Kriške pode and then to Škrlatica and to Aljažev dom in Vrata. I could do up and down in one day, but I like to sit in front of the hut in the evening and enjoy escaping this crazy daily pace at least for a day
| SunBurned9. 08. 2014 |
In my opinion, it's always better to go to the summit as early as possible. Less hot, clearer views from the top, less chance of showers, fog etc. But from Bivak IV towards Stenarska vrata there is still snow.
| luigi10. 08. 2014 |
I was up there on 9.8 and there is only one snowfield that you cross, so you don't need anything special like an ice axe or crampons. Later after Škrlatica I went to Triglav, but on Tominškova it's a bit tricky because of the snow ;-(

Very nice route and a magnificent mountain worth visiting. The fixed protections are where you need them and reliable. The wall offers very good holds, nevertheless a heaping measure of caution is needed, especially on the descent. At 4 or 5 places the route is very exposed. The route through the wall is very well laid out, praise to those who built it. If I tried to find a roughly comparable tour for difficulty, I might find it in Suhadolnik-Grdi graben-Kokarska koča-Jezerska koča-Zgornji dolci-Suhadolnik. With the difference that here the rock is compact and offers excellent grip. The tour requires good fitness and sufficient liquid in the backpack. Helmet mandatory, self-belaying only useful at two places.
| Domch31. 08. 2014 |
And also praise to the path markers for the nicely renovated markings, which are easy to follow and lead you nicely to the summit.

Picture 34. That looks very narrow and without safety gear, or is it just me? Thanks for the reply and best regards.
| JusAvgustin5. 09. 2014 |
There are no safety features, as you walk along a ledge. Nothing scary, the ledge is wide enough. Best regards
| Matej_K.5. 09. 2014 |
In reality, it's not even remotely as scary as it looks in the picture, so no worries.
| Domch5. 09. 2014 |
That section worried me too. But it's not even remotely as bad as it looks in the picture. The ledge is relatively wide, not much scree on the ground, and you can shorten the corner upwards a bit over the rock where it's less exposed. The rocks are really compact and offer good grip. Of course, you have to consider that it's 3 to 5 hours of walking to get there (depending on pace).
| Keko5. 09. 2014 |
It's a fairly undemanding section, as I don't even remember it. I remember some other sections better, but they aren't overly demanding either. There's not much exposure on this path either.

I usually go from Vrata valley alone, in one day, but early from home, if you're further away. Otherwise, if you go from Kriške pode, or via Kriška stena, a two-day tour is recommended. From Zadnjica to Luknja, then to Bovški Gamsovec and Kriške pode, that's quite enough walking for one day. Best regards
| pohodnik385. 05. 2015 |
I would do it like this: first day from Vrata to Škrlatica then to Dolkova špica from there towards Križ maybe a quick summit, overnight in Pogačnikov dom. Second day Razor which is now more demanding than it used to be descent back to the hut then to Bovški gamsovec maybe you meet some chamois, descent to Luknja and back to Vrata valley to the starting point. Otherwise the weather must be good which is crucial

Thanks to both! Pohodnik38, I think I'll do it exactly as you suggested. just the weather needs to be on my side, which it certainly will.

hi! Yesterday I was on Triglav, route Vrata-Luknja-Plemenice-Triglav in one day. Now I'm a bit tempted to do this Vrata-Škrlatica as well. I'm interested in how this path to Škrlatica compares in difficulty to the one via Plemenice to Triglav. Thanks for the info!

| MANGRT9. 08. 2015 |
tpravslovenc, the path is somewhat easier, time-wise about three-quarters of an hour shorter, most of the path goes through forest, but it's a sunny slope that requires an early start and water. Wishing you a nice day.

Today I was at the summit of Škrlatica - queen of our mountains. For the path to the summit I needed 4 hours, for the descent less than 3 hours. Aljažev dom - bivak IV 1h 45' bivak IV - Zadnji Dolek 1h Zadnji Dolek - summit of Škrlatica 1h 15'. The path from Zadnji Dolek to the summit is poorly equipped with pegs and cables; among such paths that I have walked in our mountains, definitely one of the worse ones. At some places there are simply no pegs at all or too few and climbing is often a matter of improvisation. For the queen of our mountains it would be appropriate to add another peg! I did not notice any falling rocks. Some hikers go up with self-belaying gear, but there are practically no cables, so it makes no sense. The weather in the morning was sunny, around 11.00 it started to fog, so I went down the same path, otherwise I planned to go to Dolkova Špica and past Dovskega Gamsovca.

Yesterday my friend and I did this ascent; regarding difficulty, I'd say it's more due to the length of the path and the elevation gain. Technically it's not that demanding, God forbid I'd say it's doable "with the left hand" by no means, and the climbing section is definitely not for the vertiginous. For more experienced hikers, I can hint that SVK is not necessarily needed and hinders more than helps, but that's ultimately each individual's judgment and I don't want anyone to take this as a statement. Helmet = mandatory (well, that's also individual judgment, like practically everything). As for protection, I noticed a bit higher up in the post that someone suggested adding a peg or bolt; I fully agree, not for popularizing this exceptional mountain, but for safety. Personally, I missed a peg or bolt more where they already are, but there are too few. I'm not particularly tall and during descent I had to stretch several times almost impossibly, and there an additional protection would be welcome, nothing more, there are enough cables. Otherwise, yes, nice path, I enjoyed the most where it flattens a bit from bivouac IV onwards, where there are pastures below Dolkova špica and where you see the Rokavska group, which simply leaves your mouth open. Safe steps to all!

As I already wrote, that is exactly the charm of Škrlatica, that it gives us satisfaction and the necessary "effort" in climbing. I am 164 cm tall, which is small and I had no problems with climbing. This is not a walk and it is not for everyone and let it remain that way. If we try to choose and adapt the tours to our abilities and expectations, we all get that satisfaction that we crave so much and that makes us happy.

Well, I was talking about slight difficulties on descent and not on ascent and personally for me, descent is always more strenuous and difficult than ascent, on ascent you look ahead and see every hold, indentation, peg....on descent however not, at least not there where you go facing the wall...

For the ascent I needed 3 hours and 48 minutes from Aljažev dom. The path is excellently secured, where there are no safety features, in my opinion they are not needed because there are always rocks with good grip and always enough positions where you can find a place for your feet. The descent seemed excellent to me, though you go steeply down, I had no problems. I would warn people to be careful not to trigger rocks (especially in that last climbing part), I encountered quite large rocks several times and even boulders that are actually sitting on the very edge of the path and it's just a question of when something will fall on someone's head, there's constant scree anyway and I see people who are very brave and go without helmets, please folks, use some common sense. @isalkovi, too bad I noticed your comment only today, yesterday I was up there, the dark blue bag was in the mailbox attached to the cross, I quickly checked the contents, logbook and ink yes, but I didn't notice the ID, probably at the bottom of the bag or among the logbook pages. Anyway, it seemed to me that it was some kind of logbook so I put the bag and contents back in the mailbox. Given that today is Sunday and good weather is forecast, someone will come and check the contents more thoroughly, find the ID and act accordingly, otherwise you can go up again yourself. best regards.

Is it realistic if I want to be at the top in less than 3h30min? I'm a former runner. Ran 10km in 36 minutes. Best, Klemen
| čebejla2. 11. 2017 |
Realistic, with a good walking pace you're up in 4:30. But be careful towards the top where at one or two spots you need to be particularly cautious due to icy snow.

| ms_primoz2. 11. 2017 |
If you've never been to Škrlatica before, it's a bit funny that you want to be up there in 3h30min, when you don't even know what the path is like, how long it is,... it's a bit funny to have the goal first to hike 3h30min, and only then choose the mountain That you're a former runner doesn't really have much to do with hiking in the mountains... unless you were a mountain runner. Don't forget you have extra weight on your back...

32 min is for a slightly better recreational runner. The world record is actually 26:17:53.

Klemen for help don't ask this on this forum. The question is only when you ran 10k in that time otherwise I think over three hours you have nothing to look for. I went the first time in 2h50min and I never ran 10km under 40min so I think you shouldn't have a problem.

Come on Klemen don't boast. For Slovenian conditions 32min is the time of our best runners (senior national team for middle and long distances and maybe some older junior). The current state of running in Slovenia is really weak, we have maybe 8 runners at the moment who can run around 32min. On a world scale though, yeah... real recreational runners.

BT88 "I went the first time 2h50min and never ran 10km under 40min so I think you shouldn't have a problem" - what bragging... but in 1h58min you went when you went the second time, and just stepped a bit faster? what all this country carries... omg...

Hi. For the weekend, my friend and I will do the path: Vrata -> Stenar -> Bovški Gamsovec and descent to Pogačnikov dom, and sleep there. From Pogačnikov dom in the morning we would continue to Škrlatica. Which path would be the best or do you recommend?

With a colleague, we went from Vrata to Bivak IV, then the next day to Škrlatica, Dolkovo špica Križ and back to the bivouac. The second day to Stenar (via Križ) and Bovški Gamsovec and via the hole back to Aljažev dom. Especially the view from Gamsovec and the walk through the hole back to the hut is magnificent. Recommended.

From the description it seems as if you're walking on scree the whole time in Zadnji Dolek, but the path turns left into the rocks somewhere in the middle of the scree and later returns to the scree at the junction for Rdeča škrbina, so overall it's a bit easier. If anything, the SVK is "needed" only for the first three meters across the smooth slab, and even that only if the rock is wet. At a few spots, an extra peg could be useful, as you have to make really big strides. I don't know how some kids manage it. The 6-hour walking time can stay as is, especially if you take 15-20 min breaks at the bivouac and 15-20 min before entering the wall, and if there's a crowd in the wall.

I'm reading comments about the route, but I don't know if this is a racetrack up there where someone has a shorter time or a mountain trail where a hiker enjoys the path in nature and fresh air, happy that the mountain accepts him and that he reaches the summit safely?

Since quite a few people have asked what the profile of the path to Škrlatica is like, I'm attaching my old link from the description of the Zadnjica - Škrlatica path. Especially look at the last picture. Pogačnikov dom - Škrlatica - Vrata We went in the morning from Vrata (we slept there) to Kriške pode and Razor and returned to Pogačnikov dom where we slept. The next day to Škrlatica and then to Vrata. Quite a long path with a lot of up and down, "a bit" tricky Rdeča škrbina, and we drank a lot a lot of water ...

Was on Škrlatica on Saturday 5.9.2020, sun, no snow; suggest leaving self-belay in the valley and save strength with less weight - cables are only about 30 meters and no panic, as rocks are very grippy too. Something happens to you sooner where there are no cables It says 6 hours from Vrata to summit, I needed 5:15. Other hikers overtook me, many with backpack on rope straps - wonder how they manage up and down with half a liter of water, since no hut in between. I carried 4 liters of fluid and drank it all. Don't they treat themselves to a rest and sandwich? For a day trip, recommend hiking poles, after so many hours legs already suffer. Next one to Prisojnik

matp, Congratulations on the completed tour . Regarding your other thoughts, I advise you not to worry about them. There will always be faster and also slower ones than you, likewise more and also less thirsty ones than you . Everyone walks according to their abilities - some need breaks and sandwiches in between, some only at the top or not at all. Happy trail to Prisojnik .

Opinion Špik vs Škrlatica? Škrlatica much harder?
| ppegan9. 09. 2020 |
Well, yeah, I also struggled quite a bit on Špik via Lipnica, walked a bit less than 5 hours. To Škrlatica I went from Pogačnikov dom, where I slept, so I went up and down several times - what surprised me most was that the secured part is quite sparsely secured. If you have no issues with that, then there shouldn't be problems or if you didn't have them on Špik in the last part below the summit, where there's also nothing secured and it's all steep and crumbly, then it'll be fine here too Good luck!

There are still snowfields below the bivouac and below the entry to the wall as well as on a few traverses. Possible without winter gear. But it depends on the individual. On descent, they're good for sliding down

I agree. Waterrrr, at least 3 liters... to Pogačnik you're thirsty. Marking is OK, was yesterday on Škrlatica and two weeks ago on Razor. And if you have a helmet it wouldn't be bad to use it, you have one head

You can visit Dolkova špica and Križ on the first day if you go via the upper variant from Škrlatica to Kriške pode. Nothing special. To Razor on the second day in the morning, but you have to return to Kriške pode to continue the path as you planned. Or maybe jump to Razor on the first day in the evening, second day easy to the valley.
| Kawasaki22. 07. 2022 17:50:20 |
How long would it approximately take to hike from Škrlatica to Dolkova špica and Križ to the hut at Kriški podi? Yes, Razor and Planja are in the other direction from Stenar and Bovški Gamsovec if I'm right. So maybe better to leave Razor for another time.
| mirank22. 07. 2022 18:39:28 |
He already wrote it's about 4h. You visit both peaks along the way, as they are not far off the path.
| dprapr22. 07. 2022 18:44:47 |
Both peaks are right by the path and worth visiting if it's your first time there. From Škrlatica to Kriški podi about 3 to 4 hours of walking. From Vrata thus about 8 to 9 hours.

Thanks everyone for the help. 1.Day: Vrata-Škrlatica-Dolkova špica-Križ-Kriški podi 2.Day: Kriški podi-Bovški gamsovec-Stenar-Vrata I think this would be a decent tour for hiking approx. 1st day 9-10 hours (say) and 2nd day approx. 4-5 hours. ?

On 31.8.2022 we went to Škrlatica due to favorable forecast (not too hot and cloudy). Right decision, because the path is really long and if it were hot, I would have drunk more than 5 liters of water (we had 7.5 with us). The climbing part is not as scary as it looks in pictures, it was my favorite part of the path, even a bit easier than on Jalovec. Self-belay kit is unnecessary, because there is really very little wire rope. As one before me wrote, better take water than SVK. Helmet highly highly recommended. We reached the summit in 3:45 hours and were alone up there for 10 whole minutes, which I didn't expect at all given the occupancy of the parking lot in the morning in Vrata. Views magnificent, feeling upon reaching the queen even better, descent tough on knees to go crazy - to me it seemed like the path back was twice as long as uphill.

25.8.2022 Today we went to Škrlatica from Aljažev dom in Vratih for the first time. We took 4 hours for the path to the summit, including breaks, so it would be possible to reach the summit faster too. For the descent to the starting point we took approx. 2 hours and a half, with constant pace and without breaks. Nice ascent, only no views from the top due to clouds

It's hard for us to answer such questions, since we don't know who we're dealing with . Such questions always get a bunch of comments, so that one knows even less afterwards... In short, there aren't that many steel cables, there are more pegs, but still, if you're a beginner and not quite sure-footed on such terrain..., then it's definitely better to have it with you (for safety), otherwise it's a matter of decision.

Janez, Janez... Remember how you were wise-cracking about gear some 15 years ago, then your buddy stuck you with a picture of you climbing an easier alpine route without a rope and the rest of the "prescribed" gear? Have you forgotten that already, will it be necessary to refresh it so you think a bit? And then we can say something about the value of life at that picture, if you want, what do you say? Or won't it be necessary? p.s.: I don't intend to argue, just writing this for your consideration

Nice path, aids in good condition, one bolt missing for descent before that exposed section (pics 65-57). On this section especially for less experienced a safety lanyard is useful, elsewhere not enough cables or no such exposure. No problem for experienced mountaineers. Missed signposts with times at both junctions (at bivouac IV and upper junction), only arrows.

You still have about a week this year for a visit on a completely sunny day. Up 5 hours, down 3.5. Larger groups are hiking these days. And they will show you the path, no worry about slipping or getting lost. Just start early at dawn. But it's insanely demanding. Tuesday it will rain and no longer suitable.

Hi, Has anyone been up there in the last few days and could provide more info? I'm planning to go for the first time and any information would be useful, I've checked the weather on all possible sources and it seems suitable for early Thursday morning. I'm a beginner, with only a few 2000ers and 5 via ferratas behind me. The last two ascents were Storžič (through the gully) and Valvasorjev dom - Potoški stol - Stol, which took me about 3h20min. I have plenty of gear from footwear, helmet, poles, climbing set to multiple layers of clothing. Food and drink I always take too much anyway. 😅 I'd appreciate any info, experiences, opinions.
