Access to starting point:
We drive to Mojstrana, then follow the signs for Vrata Valley. We continue on the toll road, which is closed to public traffic in winter, following it to the large parking lot located a few minutes before Aljažev dom v Vratih.
Route description:
From the parking lot, continue along the gravel road closed to public traffic, passing Šlajmerjev dom to quickly reach Aljažev dom v Vratih.
Bypass Aljažev dom on the right side and continue straight towards Triglav, Sovatna, Luknja... (right Škrlatica, bivouac at Rušje...). Continue on the rough gravel road past the winter shelter to the marked junction at the famous peg (monument to fallen partisan climbers).
Continue straight again (left Tominšek's path) as the easy path leads with fine views of Triglav and the Triglav north face. After a few minutes' further walk, we enter a beech forest where the path over Sovatna branches right; we continue straight towards Luknja and Triglav - path over Prag. A short ascent on the track follows, then markers direct us left to the path approaching the bed of Triglavska Bistrica. Here the path passes the memorial to mountain victims, shortly after reaching the next marked junction.
Left across the stream continues the path over Prag; we go straight on the path which gradually climbs more noticeably. The path to Luknja climbs moderately for a while longer, higher up becoming steeper and more panoramic. A little higher the path leads through a belt of scrub and sparse forest, where a trail branches right to the nearby bivouac; we continue on the wider path which soon exits the forest belt. The path then steepens somewhat, gradually leading to scree slopes below Luknja. The path over the scree is quite slippery, but upon reaching the foot of the walls, fixed ropes assist (easy when dry, especially useful on descent). We ascend steeply right by the wall for a short time, then the path turns slightly right, leading a bit higher to the junction at Luknja from where a fine view opens to the mountains above Zadnjica.
At Luknja turn right following signs for Bovški Gamsovec (left path via Plemenice to Triglav, straight down to Zadnjica) and ascend grassy slopes below the walls of Pihavec and Bovški Gamsovec, where alpine ibex and marmots are usually plentiful. Higher under the ridge of Bovški Gamsovec the path turns left and climbs steeply towards the ridge, somewhat exposed here. Soon we reach the partly grassy ridge, continuing steeply upwards with increasingly fine views of surrounding peaks. This brings us to the final section, technically more demanding, aided by pegs and fixed ropes. A little further the path from Dovška vrata joins from the right (path from Kriške pode or over Sovatna); we go left through rocky terrain to reach the panoramic summit of Bovški Gamsovec in a few minutes.
Starting point - Aljažev dom 0:05, Aljažev dom - Bistrica spring 0:55, Bistrica spring - Luknja 1:35, Luknja - Bovški Gamsovec 2:00.

Along the route: Aljažev dom v Vratih (1001m), Spomenik padlim partizanom gornikom (1020m), V Plazičih (1040m), Izvir Bistrice (1160m),
Luknja (1766m)

Nice ascent, nice summit. The markings just need a little refreshing, as they're no longer there at some key spots. I managed to stray at the spot I think is photo 16 (next to the chamois). Instead of left, after hesitating and with no signs, I took the more visible path right along the wall and after a few meters ended up on a completely exposed narrow ledge a kilometer above the valley. Only the conviction that it should be secured, since it's just SPP, brought me back just in time. Otherwise the markings are faded, though mostly findable.

We also set off for Bovški Gamsovec. I would easily describe everything as OK, but big criticism goes to the invisible markers. The same happened to me as to the colleague above!!! The feeling is not pleasant.

Excellent summit. One of the most beautiful in the Julian Alps (my personal opinion - view of Triglav, Škrlatica...) The markers have really faded a bit, but the path is trodden and mostly well visible. The nicest descent is towards Kriške pode, where the path is better marked and partially secured.

We would go along the path described by the guest before me. I'm interested in comparing the difficulty of the path, I've walked the Slovenska pot to Ledine or Triglav-Dolič. Thank you for the answer.

Based on your previous experiences, I think there will be no problems at all. Caution is always necessary everywhere.

The same happened to my husband and me as described by my two predecessors. First we went right and after a few meters ended up on an exposed path. We returned to the junction and luckily spotted a cairn to the left, which turned out to be the correct one.

The same happened to me and my companion. We went quite a while above the abyss, then up back to the path. It wouldn't be bad to put some marking at the junction.

...I agree about the markings! The same happened to my father and me - we also took the right side, as it seemed more trodden to us... the view was phenomenal anyway, but I don't recommend it to people who have "shaky legs" on exposed spots

do you really need the full self-belay kit and helmet

In the upper part there are some fixed cables, but the path isn't overly difficult. I think most people go without the self-belay kit.

For via ferratas a self-belay kit and helmet are essential, especially in case of long ascents-meeting on narrow paths, falling rocks aren't uncommon on such paths and lack of concentration on the wall. Occasionally you're surprised by an insect sting or encounter with a viper at a corner, gust of wind, bad weather... Some have also exhausted themselves (concentration drop) and fallen!. Use caution with full gear, especially now when the rock is friable and mountain visits enormously higher than years ago. Good luck!-Rok.

Adding a picture: Once you see this scene, it means you've missed the markings and you've already realized that (just like me).

I walked the route Zadnjica-Pogačnikov stol-Gamsovec-Luknja-Zadnjica. True, the markings have faded a bit, but the path is well-trodden and doesn't descend unnecessary cliffs at all.

Last week I walked the mentioned path. You definitely don't need a complete self-belaying kit here. In good weather, the path is also clearly visible.

Lojz path is quite wide here so you can walk normally (even two abreast). But this is one of the most beautiful parts of the path above the 1000m wall

Last week Johanček and I hiked this trail or rather continued to Pogačnikov dom. Very nice hike, nice weather provided wonderful views. In the afternoon we also went to Razor and admired the sunset. The next morning we went to Križ and Stenar and back to Vrata via Sovatna. We were without safety equipment, but I agree that a bit more concentration is needed on exposed sections. The path is clearly visible all the time. This was something for the soul. I recommend it.

We plan to do a circular route, so I'm wondering on which side it's better to go up, via Sovatna or Luknja? Thanks for the answer and happy trails.

Hi Ana! The answer is relative What is better??? Via Luknja there is quite some scree that slows the pace uphill. Maybe this info helps you decide what is better. Happy trails!

Of course, the path via Sovatna and further is no small matter either. So, it really is relative.

Mountain greetings! This summer I did a tour that also included Bovški Gamsovec (Luknja pass, summit, Kriški podi). Although I haven't gone through Sovatno yet, personally I think it's better to go in the opposite direction. From Dovška vrata to the summit there is some climbing (awkward downhill), and with the markers and scree under the hole there shouldn't be too many problems going down. p.s. At the "key" spot, I almost got lost myself. Happy trails!

Today we went through Sovatno to Bovški Gamsovec and back through Luknja. Personally, I found the direction of the tour better than the reverse. Very nice weather and a great summit. On the way, we met three friendly markers who were remarking the path.

This marking is commendable and at the same time necessary due to poor markings. Best regards and happy trails!

Today we ascended Bovški Gamsovec from Luknja and back via Sovatna. Markings have been renewed. Snow from 2100m onwards. Considerable caution required, especially downhill during descent over snowy rocks towards Dovška vrata. Otherwise a very nice tour. Some photos here:

Hello! Could someone please provide a comparison of the difficulty of the ascent to Bovški Gamsovec and Tominškova pot? (Response desired today...) Thanks in advance!

Bovški Gamsovec is less demanding, both technically and in terms of exposure.

These two ascents are hard to compare. The ascent to B. Gamsovec is considerably easier. Somewhat more exposed from Dovška vrata - but still nothing special. From the Luknja direction it's a bit harder just below the summit. A month ago I did the route from Vrata via Sovatna to Stenar and then down to D. Vratca and on to D. Gamsovec and down via Luknja back to Vrata. Especially beautiful is the path from Gamsovec to Luknja. Wonderful view (especially to the wall) and countless different flowers. Great. Worth seeing.

Thanks for the comments! Yesterday already "done" and I agree with the ratings. We went up via Sovatna and down via Luknja. Precisely because of the (shorter) exposure from Dovška vrata up, it seems to me more appropriate to go up here rather than down. Otherwise: bomb! We only saw marmot holes from the marmots.... P.S. The times listed here are quite "loose". We weren't some super speedsters, but we needed 3.45 via Sovatna. But I wonder more if you climb from Luknja to the top in 2 hours....

LP Andrej! Who knows, but the steepness to Luknja still dragged on me even downhill. Thank God the views of Triglav outweighed it. But this "doubt" of mine is purely subjective, so the marked time will hold.

Hello. Is Bovški Gamsovec suitable for ascent if I head there alone (I would also have a self-belay kit with me). I am aware that we shouldn't go to the mountains alone but the situation turned out such that I urgently need the mountains company unfortunately can't make it. Thanks for the opinion. I would ascend to it from Kriških podov. Best, Maja

Was there yesterday. Through Luknja to the top, the path is dry except for small patches of snow, which are not worth mentioning. In the sun it was really pleasantly warm. Descended through Sovatna. Here along the path there is a bit more snow especially on shady sides, the snow is frozen, so caution is not superfluous!

I was yesterday, though in the opposite direction and with a slightly extended path. So: Sovatna, Križ, Pogačnikov dom, Bovški Gamsovec, Luknja. The tour was really excellent and one of the best we've ever done. Truly unique views, we also saw ibex, some chamois, one viper, but no marmots . The path from Dovških vrat to Gamsovec is really very exposed in places, the view of the cliffs can be frightening and dizzying for many. But no panic. Start from Vrat at 5:45, we returned at 16:00.

Really nice path, but on a few meters (at least one ledge) it's quite exposed; a via ferrata cable would be appropriate. The path first from the top towards Kriški podi is well secured.

Hello What's the trail to Bovški Gamsovec like, through the Luknja. Is it icy anywhere at this time. Is extra caution needed anywhere? Otherwise it's on the south side and the sun warms it up. Tomorrow I plan to go over Gamsovec to Stenar. Back via Sovatna. If anyone knows, I'd be glad for an answer.

From what could be seen from the mulatjera there can't be much snow. But there might be on some part of the path so it's good to have an ice axe. For example in Bovška škrbina snow remains. Well maybe elsewhere too. The snow is southern. It's nice to walk on it. And safe ascent I wish!

And what's the trail from Gamsovec towards Sovatna like, and how much time do we need to the top of Sovatna. The day is already short. I know ...but the larger half has trouble getting up early. Definitely from Vrata at seven o'clock.

Yesterday we went up this path to the summit, then to Stenar and back via Sovatna. The path is really exposed in some places, but you can avert your gaze. I had SVK in my backpack, but didn't use it, and on the most exposed spots there's no possibility to use it either (from the Dovških vrat direction there are more options). To me, it doesn't matter which path up and down. Both are steep, but via Luknja you reach the saddle about 400m earlier and get to the direction change sooner. The descent via Sovatna drags on quite a bit. In eight hours, it added up to 14km and 1735 elevation meters.

Here, another successful hike. The entire path from Aljažev dom in Vratih (via Luknja) is shown. No snow anymore, so winter gear no longer needed, for via ferrata gear it's optional... Personally I'm afraid of heights, but for this path I didn't use the full set (I had it with me because it's recommended). On the more exposed sections, a more careful step is needed, and sometimes you can't clip in at all (not many such sections). If you have children with you, keep them leashed. I highly recommend a helmet, especially because there were already many of us triggering rocks. Extra caution is never too much. I hope this video convinces you to take the time (assess if you're ready) and visit Bovški Gamsovec. You're nicely rewarded with the view at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NekpSnn52h4&list=PLCxvFZAu2k7ZlICujW4asZmxFO7md7THq&index=5&t=0s

Today we used the described route for the ascent to Bovški Gamsovec. The last 10 meters or so below Luknja are a bit awkward, but nothing critical. Between Luknja and the summit there is another somewhat exposed section where you need to be careful. To the summit without issues in 3 hours. We descend towards Dovška vrata (25 min), from there towards Pogačnikov dom (25 min). For the descent we return to Dovška vrata, from where we descend to the valley in just over 2 hours. On the way from Dovška vrata to the valley we encounter a group of older gentlemen and a lady (approx. 60-70 years old) who were visibly struggling with the ascent on the section with fixed cables. They decided to rest at the bottom of a small gully, after which one of the hikers above them dislodged a large rock that flew towards them. They just stood there watching it fly towards them. So they had time to move away, but they didn't realize . Backpacks on the ground, some without helmets, reaction time a few seconds. In short, don't rest in gullies because you are exposed to falling rocks, especially if there is a crowded trail at the top of the gully. Nice circular route otherwise

On 26.9. I walked this path, and I can only say WONDERFUL ..views of Triglav and surroundings are worth every meter over scree to Luknja. Then descent to Dovška vrata and on to Stenar and also Križ, return to Vrata via Sovatna (lucky I didn't choose it for ascent ). SVK is not necessary for this tour (I took it on the trip ), as there are only 5 wire ropes in total, but in some sections you need to watch your feet!!!, as there are exposed places.
