With some delay, for possible repeaters. In the first half of April I was in Madrid, which is already relatively high itself, nice mountains are just a stone's throw away and can be visited casually. To the north, the first more interesting group is La Pedriza. In Madrid you can buy area maps (1:25,000) in the sports store barnabas (something like that) on the same street in the center where the El Rastro market takes place on Sundays. There are several outlets there, but only this slightly larger one has maps in the basement. It's less than an hour's ride by bus (bus 724, platform 26 at Plaza Castilla, direction Pinar de Chamartin), which runs quite frequently. Get off in peaceful Manzanares el Real, at the "main" station right after the castle by the road (there's one more by the lake). Across the road is a larger grocery store for possible restocking. Some trails start already here, but almost nothing is marked. Most hikers start at the inn a couple km higher (Canto Coccino), where there are also signs. A free bus from the town goes there several times a day. There are plenty of trails in front and back Pedriza and many are marked. But you have to be careful, as there are lots of shortcuts, unmarked junctions and misleading cairns. The boulder landscape is ideal for some scrambling, and it's also a world-famous climbing area. Almost by the river is the only hut, which is usually open only on weekends. The highest peaks barely exceed 2,000m, the background is slightly higher, so it's usually mostly snow-free here early in spring. On the first visit we did a circular tour to the highest peak in front Pedriza — El Yelmo. To the very summit you have to squeeze through a longer chimney on the north side, for which the II rating (summitpost?) seemed exaggerated to me. A couple of days later a longer circular through back Pedriza, past the ridge/peaks La Milanesa, Dos Torres, sphinx etc. Don't go in summer.
