From Ljubelj to the hut at Zelenica via the ski slope. Regardless that the hut is under construction, the feeling at Zelenica is friendly and pleasant perhaps thanks to the caretaker. After drinking tea we head to Zelenjak. There was little snow on the slope under Palec. In the gully we didn't meet any mountaineer so we experienced a real solitary alpine ascent. A little more scrambling to the top and the goal was reached. Let me say that such tours should REALLY only be done by experienced mountaineers without vertigo and with scrambling knowledge, as the path to the top is very demanding and overhanging, so use your brains. Especially on descent I advise caution at every step. Since the day was still long we also visited the Hut at the source of Završnica. Here too they are still painting the cabin, both interior spaces and rough external wooden parts. Of course they won't refuse you drinks and you can pick some blueberries along the way.

Friday 9.1.2009 we used for a visit to Zelenjak. Full moon invited us to a night tour. Conditions through Suho ruševje excellent. From the saddle to the top of Zelenjak problem only on ascent over snow-covered and icy scree to ridge where in loose snow footprints a bit unstable. Rest of the path pure poetry. On the top, from which the view over Slovenia and Austria was beautiful, we stood at 21:22. Tour in complete solitude, only on return at Zelenica met two ski tourers heading to Žleb saddle. From Zelenica INSANELY GOOD sledding to Ljubelj.

Is the path to Zelenjak really very demanding and EXPOSED, as Guest says; intended only for experienced mountaineers without vertigo with 'climbing' knowledge?? I don't count myself among them, but I'm thinking about this trip. Am I wrong then? Thanks for your objective answers!

The path is not overhanging, but the slope we ascend is very steep and crumbly. Great caution is needed, especially on descent. Otherwise Zelenjak seems a bit harder than Palec to me. Best

Palec and Zelenjak are very similar. Really don't know why climbing experience is needed for these two peaks. The last five minutes are really a bit steeper, maybe you need to grab a rock but nothing worse. Also no talk of excessive airiness of the path. Just boldly and of course cautiously like on other mountains. Good luck.

Edina, I always like your choice of paths very much. I can hardly wait for you to report where you've gone again and describe some of your path variants and photograph the beautiful nature. Keep it up!

Today with a colleague did a morning jump to Zelenjak, from there also to Palec. Mostly cloudy but no rain. So not hot, but due to night rain we were both wet as ducks when pushing through the dwarf pines (scree). On descent we went a bit above the pines over the scree. To me a very nice tour, I recommend it.

Today I take advantage of the last nice day at quite visited Zelenica. After a week of sun exposure, the snow was accordingly hardened and frozen. Many visitors, both alpinists, hikers and tourers, still in the afternoon they came in crowds to do the tour. Conditions will soon change with coming snowfall and become more demanding with larger amount of new snow. Up at the viewpoint jackdaws joined me, which I fed well. As thanks one jackdaw fluttered its wings right over my head and thus announced thanks with cooling. A few more pictures from the wonderful day .

What are the conditions like for walking to Zelenica from Ljubelj?
