We have lots of beautiful hills at home, but at least once a year I like to peek across the border too. On Sunday I decided to visit those mentioned hills, since I hadn't been to any yet. I had ''Akcija'' with me, who as usual chickened out.
In under two hours we dashed to Pecol, where it was already pretty lively. In Brazzi smoke was already coming from the chimney, we continued past the hut on the proper traverse full of hikers. But not far in their company. At the poorly visible junction that I now know well, turned right and immediately we were completely alone. Below the entry threshold to Škrbina nad Tratico he left me too, he was afraid the terrain was too demanding for him there. Of course that's not true, the path does get a bit lost in the lower part, but higher up with a bit more attention you see it's nicely routed and nowhere exceeds grade one difficulty. I reached Škrbina nad Tratico in under 40 minutes. Can't leave the nice saddle, the view from it is exceptional. Head right to the first hill, thin and loose cables left a bad impression. Soon the slope flattens, quarter hour more on easy ridge and you're at the six-year-old bivouac right on top of the mountain. Views extraordinary, though some fog was gathering. Short drop to the notch and along nice path far around the hill, where on SE side left opens wide easy gully that takes you to top of Špik nad Špranjo. Interesting, didn't spot any cairns anywhere. Stayed up there at least half hour, quite a few hikers went toward Škrbina nad dolino 2352, none to the summit though. Back to car same way, it's the shortest.

Tone, congratulations on the nice tour. I know you have long mileage, but still it surprises me that on first ascent to described peaks and with indecisive friend you chose direct approach to Škrbina nad Tratico and that without problem inserted approach to Špik nad Špranjo. When years ago traversed Špiki via Ceria Merlone path I looked to summit of Špik nad Špranjo, but didn't dare decide for ascent. Do you have pic of gully for ascent to summit from Ceria Merlone path?

Sorry, Franc, took lots of pics, but there no shot. Annoyed me that Italians skimp on cairns, though enough stones velik nasmeh

. Also on map between 'Nos and 'Špranja almost straight line drawn, though must circle 'Špranja at least 150 degrees before hitting mentioned gully. Direct from saddle along ridge in my feel several times good III. But all these mentioned distances really so short not worth words.
And word or two on mentioned approaches. From Škrbina nad Tratico last year 14.10. first descended via mentioned path after visiting 'hudih Poljci, 'Tratice and 'Stundicev and liked the little path already then, esp short as leads direct to Brazzi. On ascent to Špik nad Špranjo from mentioned track, let experts correct - bit gravel, bit slabs not too steep, assurance my approach not exceeded I. difficulty.

Thanks for clarifications. Descent from Škrbina nad Tratico to hut Brazza also mentioned several times by Igor. Summit Špik nad Špranjo reached (in summer conditions) also by some others from this forum, but ascent no one described more precisely. Obviously Mihelič's note holds that summit accessible at several places with 100m easy climbing. (Julian Alps -1268 Ceria Merlone Path).

Tone - nice report, and the weather was ideal for nice shots. And one small remark: on the pic it's a goat in my opinion and not a chamois.

Of course, Janez. There were quite a few of those horned ones, mostly around the bivouac and thanks for the warning. All had short horns, so I automatically thought of chamois, which have much thinner and curved at the end.

Today I saw at the intersection /where you turn left towards Rablj/in Trbiž a sign that said something in Italian about Sela nevea...pass, so I thought maybe they're repairing the road..closing it or something... zmeden

On this link you can check road conditions in Italy. In the Citta box enter the town or place you're interested in and get info on road passability there. Helped me when road to Forni Avoltri was closed years ago and road from Pesaris to Sella di Razzo.

Two weeks ago I went to Špik Hude police, and it bugged me where that upper section to Luca bivouac goes, so this Sunday I went myself to check Špik nad Nosom. The path itself extremely nice, views fantastic, only the protection gear I'd leave at home cuz we don't need it for those three cables. Summit full of ibex, no words on bivouac. Just gaped when I opened the door, never seen such nice and tidy bivouac. Obviously Czechs don't come to this end....))))

I picked this up when driving towards Pecol...)))

it is really a pleasure to look into such a bivouac

We started from Pecol as the first at 5:20 and continued past Brazza along the path that branches off after a few steps towards the easiest summit ŠHP. Below the ŠHP summit, the path branches to the right, followed by some descent and then ascent to the saddle, where we equipped ourselves with SVKs and harnesses. From the saddle, we looked towards Viš and Naboj, which were already engulfed in fog. Motivation dropped slightly, but what is, is. The weather forecast has been different many times, and later it proved correct. The entry into light scrambling was blocked by a snowfield, which we easily crossed or bypassed. After a few minutes of scrambling, we reached a smaller steep snowfield, which we carefully crossed, then a somewhat steeper section secured by a cable to the forepeak marked by a large cairn. Followed 15 minutes of ridge walking, where here and there it is still necessary to grab the rock, a bit up, a bit down; from the fog peeks the bivouac dedicated to Luca Vuerich. I won't waste words on it, all superlatives. We reached the summit at 8:50. Soon it completely cleared, and an hour before Viš and Montaž were in fog, now it was just the opposite. Joy was complete, a light breeze was blowing, fogs retreated over the summits, and the temperature was pleasantly nice. Although we were tempted to visit the nearby Špik nad Špranjo, we took a full hour and enjoyed the company of a herd of almost domesticated ibex. On the way, we met only four hikers, while zooming on ŠHP, we couldn't count the visitors due to the crowd. On the return, we put on helmets again, as there was a big risk of rockfall from ŠHP visitors, and ibex are not fully trustworthy either. As for SVK use, I put on the harness and SVK. I didn't need it anywhere. The description says it is recommended, and that's right! It will be useful for many! Day (tour) finger-licking good.
