Hello, I'm curious how fast you hike in the mountains? I admit, I'm one of the slower ones myself. Sometimes it bothers me when I'm hiking up the hill and others overtake me It's not that others bother me, I'm mad at myself because obviously I'm really slow. On certain hills I hike regularly, I go pretty fast. But if I go somewhere new or if there are more than 600m of elevation gain, I pant like h... Can someone tell me what a normal speed is for hiking in mountains for someone with moderate fitness. Thanks.

Some average speed according to mountaineering literature should be approx. 400 vertical meters per hour or about 4 km length (flat) per hour. The question is what normal speed and moderate fitness mean to you. Don't worry at all if people overtake you. Me too

400 vertical meters is already quite a good pace if the tour is “high” more than 1200 vertical meters. For hills up to cca 1200 vertical meters, these 400 per hour could well count as some normal pace.

Thanks for the answers. If it's about cca. 400m elevation gain, e.g. Sv. Primož, I cover that in 50-55 minutes. If it's more elevation, my pace slows down considerably. To Kamniški vrh I already struggle to get there without stopping several times for a minute or two. What else can I do for better fitness besides regularly hiking in the mountains?

Except when it's about catching the time frame to complete the tour (day length), I don't worry about it. If they overtake me, it's a great opportunity for some humor besides the standard cheers. The first goal is to get home safe, including the drive, so you shouldn't burn out while panting to the top. As said above, sustained pace drops with the amount of elevation gain. They taught me something that you need to find an even pace with which you can walk all day, there's probably something to it. In the mountains, fitness-wise, I performed best when I also moved a bit during the week - e.g. bike to work or running or local short hikes. Maintaining fitness and hiking pace suffered during times with more stress and when there were a few extra kilos on the body. Choice of footwear, clothing, backpack and what's in it (content and arrangement) can surprisingly affect pace and feeling on the tour. You don't need to count grams and some ultra quality here, important that the basics fit.

In my youth I could divide all times on the mountain signs by 2 (I used 50% of the prescribed time). Now that I have 6 crosses on my back, the situation is exactly the opposite. I have to multiply all times on the signs by 2 or more. So I have experience with all speeds and ways of walking. But I'm most proud that about 20 years ago I got from the Koča in Kamniška Bistrica to Vrh Grintovca in 2 hours and 25 minutes. In the end you realize that everything depends on which year is written for the specific individual. Life changes a lot depending on the time of life.

Here's my opinion too. There are several different fitness levels, including short and long hike fitness (of course in mountains). Short hike is usually around one hour, to a nearby hill or mountain, long one say three hours or more. If you maintain fitness for short tours, it doesn't mean Triglav won't kick your ass. So, if you plan a long tour (5 hours or more), do at least three tours of about three hours beforehand (say one per month), it'll be much easier. I'm talking only about ascent hours, as written on the red signs. As for speed, just this. There can be only one best, the rest of us are somewhere behind. Where exactly doesn't matter at all, because we don't compete, we enjoy nature, views and good company. Compare only to yourself, of course if you want progress, otherwise don't worry about times. In any case you overtake all those at home on the couch. And one more wisdom. The summit is halfway, the goal is home on the couch.

Some are so fast they have to wait for each other at the top
