Salewa - via ferrata

Hello!

What is your opinion about Salewa gear, which they are currently selling at a good price of 100 eur in Hervis Qlandia in Kamnik. Helmet, lower part of climbing harness and Y self-belay kit. I would use it for visiting Slovenian mountains. Helmet more often, the rest as needed or more for securing harder passages, ascents... On Hervis website there is a flyer - click on Qlandia and then you have the flyer.

Salewa was three decades ago a synonym for quality tents, down jackets and more. Now the firm has turned to a large assortment of products and in quality cannot match other professional firms that are narrowly focused on individual products. So Salewa tents are quite simple with minimal additional seam processing, pockets, poles of smaller Al diameters etc. I heard that someone's pants tore at the seams after not too heavy loading. Finally, I think Salewa is still acceptable for average users, but by no means belongs to top-quality products. For your case, weigh your frequency of use of the product and the still acceptable price for the item. With the diverse offer of mountaineering equipment manufacturers in Slovenia, for a slightly more expensive purchase you can get an incomparably better product than average junk. So I instead of a Salewa tent acquired the renowned Vaude Mark II tent, which will loyally serve me for many years without a torn flysheet or water leaking anywhere.

If you are not a demanding user and if you will use it for what you wrote, it is acceptable.. otherwise no!

Would use it for visiting Slovenian mountains. Helmet more often, the rest as needed or more for belaying harder passages, ascents...

In my opinion and exclusively from reviewing the flyer, both the belay kit and harness are Petzl products, which should be a good enough name as synonym for quality. Although you never know....

Other side of the story:
On this flyer the harness looks quite cheap to me. Also the belay kit is questionable. For Scorpio vertigo wl I would expect absorber from sewn loop, but on flyer it looks like metal plate. Although maybe everything holds (brand, model...), according to some individual tests belay systems with metal plate are quite "stiff" and do not fulfill their task in case of fall. So, much safer choice is system made with sewn loop.

Personally I would rather buy such things at specialized store and separately, not in some kits. Regarding price, it was already written here once, insurance helps buy helmet and harness - if you just tell them you bought it.

Although I'm allergic to Hervis and other similar stores... if you add it all up the value is well over 100 euros, so I think for your needs (visiting Slo. mountains) it's more than enough. Of course if you decide to take "top of the top" you'll pay well over 100 euros. Otherwise I join gepp's opinion! For ZPP in Slovenia yes.

Sometimes sales promotions are done due to selling old stocks or mass orders and thus the price is lower.
In Slovenia we have quite a few specialized stores for climbing gear, where they also know how to advise, teach the user, not just sell (kibuba, promontana, iglu sport-akcija, terra sport). "NOT DOING ADVERTISING BUT HELPING!!" I personally have harness and belay CASSIN, CAMP-CHILD AND EDELRID - quality and price accordingly.

100 eur for such a kit is a good price, so if you don't have all three things yet and need them, it's worth taking. Regarding quality - if all items have UIAA label, the thing is tested and safe and that's all you need from such a product. The harness in the picture is really simpler, obviously intended only for self-belay on ferratas and not for prolonged hanging. That specialized stores advise and don't sell is nonsense, the task of the store (even specialized) is to sell, seller advises exclusively with the purpose to sell.

Thanks for answers! I think there is a mistake in the flyer, and the picture and price are for Salewa, although description for Petzl. They had the same kit in Hervis in City park in Lj for 120 eur. Probably I'll buy it. I estimate I'll need it max 10×/year, so I think it will be good enough and safe. The mentioned Salewa Toxo helmet is more comfortable (for my head) than Petzl Elios.

So there is a mistake in the ad? Actually it's Petzl kit?

Hi.
Has anyone bought this kit perhaps?
@bkobal: It's Salewa kit, which contains Toxo helmet, Via Ferrata Lite harness and via ferrata g4 cobra.

I'm interested if this harness could be used also for climbing and not only for ferratas? I have no climbing experience, but would like to try or learn.

Thanks for help.

best, Blaž

I wouldn't buy it just to have it, I need all that anyway.. but I'd rather give 50 or more EUR, if such a kit is significantly better than these here.. but I'm leaning most towards the Petzl kit.. because you advocate specialized stores like that, but e.g. Camp Rockstar helmet in Iglu 40 EUR, in Hervis 30.. so why buy in Iglu?? just because it's a specialized store and pay 10 EUR more, thanks no.. thanks for all advice, if any..velik nasmeh

Technical gear should be of the same quality in any store, as it must have a quality certificate. Occasionally it happens anyway that the manufacturer recalls certain series of products due to defects (e.g. Petzl's Grigri 2...), this happens to other "big" manufacturers too, for example in the automotive industry.
As for the self-belay kit, I advocate a kit with stretchy slings, so-called ferrata connectors and brake plate; the manufacturer is not even important (my opinion).

I'm also interested in some advice around these safety kits. I already have a helmet, Petzl, but not yet a harness and kit, though I plan to get them soon. Any smart suggestions?
