Ridge Traverse Bavški Grintavec - Svinjak

Noname, the elevation gain in the opposite direction with all intermediate ascents is about 1000 meters (Svinjak - BG + 1200 to Svinjak), and quite a bit of it is through brush. As journeyman already wrote, I also advise you to rather do the tour in the direction BG - Svinjak, so the brush is mostly downhill, as it's easier and less strenuous that way.

@journeyman, @funnyboy: Thanks to both for the help and advice, it'll come in handy if I decide. You know how it is: the harder/impossible it is, the more it attracts you.

Since the whole ridge might be a bit too much time-wise, I got the idea to first check out one part. The map shows a "poorly marked trail" (as per map legend) somewhere in the middle to Špičica. Maybe someone knows how it is in reality, if anything actually exists or if it's all overgrown? Below map excerpt.

I went that way, but it's about 10 years ago. Back then there was something of the trail, now I don't know. From the ridge you can see where this path joins it, since there's only a little cut brush there. Can't tell you more than that

Yesterday's day, as it turned out in the end, maybe wasn't suitable for this ridge, but what can you do when the desire is too strong. Tour: from upper Trenta to Bavški Grintavec and then along the ridge to Svinjak and down to Kal Koritnica. Approaches from the north to BG (everything converging to the north ridge) are officially closed (faded signs say temporary, but it's clear this temporary will be quite permanent), just wreckage, some fixed protections still usable, at least at key spots... Then along the ridge to the junction of the marked path to Bavšica - in my opinion, big enough challenge for those sticking to marked paths - faded marks, trail hard to follow; in short, call it easier pathless in this site's dictionary. From the junction onward along the ridge first over Vrh ruš - brush here not problematic, sidestep to the north side. From Pri banderi over Vrh ovčje planje to Kozja planja pure poetry, so nice you sit almost too long. From top of Kozja planja deep bypass on south side - thanks predecessors for useful advice. Here and there in steep grass already via ferrata set useful (not critical yet). With lower bypass continue toward Špičica through sea of yellow flowering bushes. Left (few meters) from its summit a clear gully visible, down it to slanted grassy ramp leading to steep grass - right through them a bit below saddle toward next lump. On that first few meters left, then almost directly up. From here on guerrilla style through real brush hell , that doesn't let you breathe till Svinjak. This part best described by Jovan already - for crazies and masochists. First descent as predecessors hinted, down brushy flank. And up over some smaller lumps to Ostra rob, where Andrej caught me first, few minutes later Matej and Urša. How unlikely to meet on such ridge... Together we continued the fight with brush for a while, I started lagging because heat had worn me down properly - this time underestimated tour length, heat and sun and took too little fluids - Matej and Urša helped me. From Ostrega roba we turned down along ridge quite left to brushy gully, down it deep to grass where passage opens to grassy gully, down it to steep grassy passage on south slopes to bypass vertical ridge lump above us. Here via ferrata really comes in handy. From here up - each of us different variant back to ridge. Every time wrongly expecting Svinjak summit . Still quite a few lumps, length almost 0.5 km. All in desperately dense brush. You use some meters of passages, but doesn't help much. Especially if exhaustion plagues you. Finally reach Svinjak summit. From here down no choice but grit teeth and get down as you know and can. At least no more brush to endure

Bravo for this traverse . Definitely a tour that stays with you. While reading your report I remembered what mountain romance I experienced when I hiked up there alone indeed, really interesting and complete tour. Bravo again and good luck in the future

Bravo for the tour. What's the condition of the path from Soča to BG? Been once for first SPP, planning second time this year.

Bravo, bravo who would have thought there'd be such a crowd on this ridge? @trobec, more as a joke than seriously, I'm curious: will Urška forgive you for taking her up here?

Well, she decided to go herself, and she's a bit of a masochist, she knew what awaited her But in the densest scrub there really was a comment "if you pick up more like this I'm not coming along anymore" That kind of crowds I really didn't expect, I admit.
