Podgorski Peak (Monte Nebria), 1207m

djimuzl13. 04. 2017 11:28:34
On a pleasant viewpoint above the Canal Valley, Podgorski Peak (Monte Nebria), we started on 7.4. from Ovča vas. The starting point and path beginning are the same as for the - described on these pages - path to Planina Strehica http://www.hribi.net/izlet/ovcja_vas___valbruna_planina_strehica_/1/1528/2649
Marked access to the summit is possible from two sides – via the path to the saddle (Forcella Nebria) and further along the road or along the ridge of the eastern summit. There's also a path from Ukve. We tackled a circular path via the saddle along the road and back via the eastern ridge, which is also described in the guide "Julijske Alpe, 53 selected hikes and mountain tours", author is the Villach lover of the Julian Alps Helmut Lang. For the circular path we needed about two and a half hours of walking.

After morning coffee in Kranjska Goranasmeh, a short hop to Jasna, where it was still all calm and peaceful in the morning. Then we drive to Ovča vas, from where this peak doesn't look very attractive. A loner in the middle of Canal Valley, rising south of Ukve.
A peak of modest height, which I first heard about a month ago, when its summit appearance and view charmed me instantly, so it was just a matter of time when it would be its turn.
Monte Nebria is a hill that boasts three peaks, and from each a different view opens, I can't say from which it's nicer.

I also don't know if the peak is lonely or not, on Saturday no one was seen, just a group of cyclists who temporarily stopped between the western and eastern peak, but didn't climb it.

Monte Nebria is a peak that captivates you and where it's immediately clear that you need to return for its views, because it offers a really special experiencenasmeh.

Monte Nebria in winter garb nasmeh. It's really strange that such a beautiful peak so close to Tarvisio is known by so few people, at least Slovenes. On the same day, crowds of visitors flocked on pilgrimage to Višarje, here we met only a few.

From Ovča vas (Valbruna) we did a nice, fully marked circular variant in three hours. The path to the eastern peak is very suitable for snowshoes, to the western one it won't be so easy with them. Highly recommended.

Parking coordinates: 46.500431, 13.484833

Trail signs are by the road. At the first next signposts we turned sharply right.1

Winter joy :) We had snowshoes but didn't use them due to the track8
The branch to the western peak is slightly hidden. At the first sharp left bend turn downhill, direction Ukve9

The path to the western, higher peak is marked. Mostly we climb along the ridge11
Cross on the western summit, Višarje and Ovčja vas in the background12
This peak is also an excellent viewpoint13
We descended along an easy road, probably from the times of the First World War14
The tunnel dimensions are grossly disproportionate to the road15
One of the tunnel entrances is partially buried in scree, but no problems for walking16

Today we joined the Lip Bled mountaineering section. The above descriptions are excellent and clear, I just add that the path is dry and b.p.
Interesting peak to start the hiking season.

Saturday, 15.6.2019

Due to promises that the heat would peak, we looked for a lower goal close to home. Close because we usually travel much farther, lower goal because we rarely visit such a low summit. We didn't have the predicted heat, but quite some unpredicted rain. The Friday evening forecasts are to be trusted, not the Saturday morning ones. Paths up and down are without features, the crosses still stand, how it is with the logbooks and stamps I don't know, because we didn't sign and stamp anything. The peak of the heat wave I later experienced and survived at home on the couch, with top goodies from the co-op in Ukve and a pint of Guinness velik nasmeh

Today's nice walk along the peaks of Monte Nebria / Podgorski vrh. The path from Ovča vas via Nebria saddle was completely dry all the way to the summit, on the path from the eastern peak to Ovča vas through the forest there was a little snow, which in combination with fallen leaves and frozen ground created a slide in places - Nice morning it was nasmehnasmeh

After a few years we visited Monte Nebria again, a lesser-known peak near Tarvisio. It's of a special kind, as geographically it belongs to the Julians, geologically to the Carnians. It also has a central position above the Canal Valley and is a great viewpoint. So much so that the army chose it as part of the Alpine Wall, a defensive line against possible enemy invasion. It was built for the purposes of the second war, reactivated in the fifties as a NATO defense line against Warsaw Pact forces (read YU).

To Monte Nebria you can ascend in two directions. The military road on the left is gentle and easy, in winter also excellent for snowshoeing. It leads to the equally easy eastern summit (Cima Est). The right, eastern path 658 also arrives here. It goes through the forest and with thicker snow cover not necessarily trodden. The western summit is a story of its own. The ridge to it is narrow and not for everyone, especially in winter. But nothing special, just need some more experience. This time we had snow only a sample and no winter gymnastics nasmeh.
We park a bit outside the village. Sunday campers don't give up and even in sub-zero cold *enjoy* on their chairs.1
We will do a wider circular variant, so about a kilometer of asphalt won't escape us.2
In the background is Monte Nebria, which also has the lesser-known name Podgorski vrh.3
The Christmas village by the road is just being prepared …4
We continue along the track all the way to the signpost. Here we choose path 658.5
We turn right across the stream and past the old fortification go onto the forest path.6
This crosses the slope in numerous hairpin turns all the way to the summit area.7
Above it joins the military road from the Alpine Wall period. The first peak Cima Est is very close.8
The path along the summit ridge runs along the southern side and here the snow has almost all melted.9
On the eastern summit, we will also visit the western one in the background.10
First we must descend a little along the road, then at the markers we turn sharply right.11
The day is short, shadows are already licking Ovčjo vas.12
The ridge to the western summit is short and sweet, but with a thicker snow cover it is not quite easy.13
Memorial on the summit erected by mountain enthusiasts.14
This one is the official one.15
View towards the neighbouring peak where the descent path to Ukve runs.16
These are dressed in winter attire. In winter the sun does not visit them much.17
View of the eastern summit where we were a little earlier.18
We descend along the former military road.19
We are grateful for the warm sun because the temperature is constantly below freezing.20
Tunnel in sight :)21
And this is a Tunnel with a capital T, unusually high and fortified.22
On the other side nature is slowly taking its course.23
The descent is quick and easy. There is little snow and it is powdery.24
The finale is already in deep shadow.25
7 km and 500 m of elevation gain accumulated for us.26

Yippee, here I am again, it was last Friday, third time from the same parking lot up. Past the artificially snowed children's ski/sled area into the forest and at the first junction right. Slowly and easy to the eastern peak, views oh and wow, then a bit back and around the road to the main one. To the main peak beautiful pines, as if painted, from the top views even more oh and wow than from the east. Your eye moistens and your heart warms, it's so beautiful nasmeh Despite more of a walk than a trip, considering length and elevation difference, a short break was welcome, a little snack no less. Since I was in the mountains, like a plane I am and will be, no one stays up there, so I had to go down, no choice. In Tarvisio still an errand, then over Predel to Trento, to see what they're doing and how they are in Zajnci and Na Logu. Also there beautiful and clear, why not, Triglav as if painted, almost freshly snowed. Then over Vršič and soon after end of the fairy tale, which luckily is a sequel, can also be a series, as you like velik nasmeh

Penultimate Friday in February I was here again, up the footpath and down the road through the tunnel. Both on the path and road some snow, more for joy than nuisance, despite cold day and frozen snow no crampons needed. Solitude and peace in abundance, views enchanting, even if lower and shorter very pleasant nasmeh
