Like all of you, I like to go to the mountains. I have one question: I'm preparing to buy a camera and now on the market there are lots of brands and models, in short oooogromno offer and very hard choice. So I ask you for advice what you use. Thanks and mountain greetings

For a start I'd suggest from my own experience something simple - a small Canon or some other brand, so as not to do advertising. Now there's so much of this CRAP on the market, no problem. The camera should be light and simple. When you've outgrown it, you know, more money better camera. Ask yourself why you need it and how much knowledge you have - lp Starakapa

Previously I used Canon compact A75. It's light, yes, but color rendition wasn't the best. Now I use SLR Olympus E-510, mainly for color rendition. Downside is small dynamic range (compared to competition). Each brand has its pros and cons, so you'll have to make your own compromise on what suits you best. Very good site http://www.dpreview.com/ with tests for practically all cameras on the market.

Hehe, every beggar praises his own bag, and me too... big smile I used Canon digital Ixus for a long time, when it thankfully retired with a sad look, I hesitated between SLR and bridge version. Just because of compactness (in mountains every extra gram of weight is annoying) I chose the latter and got Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28. So far it has served me excellently, both in "idiot-proof" mode and all possible settings. It's true you have to dive deep if you want to fully use all options it offers - there are plenty (already 18x optical zoom is worth its price). Here's an older review (in English): TEST . I didn't buy it here but on eBay and got it 100.00 EUR cheaper than it was here then (paid 320.00 EUR including shipping), in package with 8GB memory card, extra battery, case and USB reader. If you're a complete beginner in this field, I'd join starekapa's opinion... start with something simpler, then you'll see what you need. And lots of good photos!

I use CANON A2100 (optical zoom 6x) AND SONY DSC H50 (optical zoom 15x) Son has CANON 400D. If you're a complete beginner, really start with a more basic version at first. Then you'll soon find out the shortcomings and wishes and buy a suitable camera. I advise you to thoroughly check specs, tests, reviews on forums. And one more thing - I got it through online shop cca. 70 eur cheaper than in the well-known store even though they promised me a discount. LP

Don't complicate, for posting on net you just need a regular camera, different if you're pro photographer. I got tried and durable Canon PowerShot A590 IS for 150eur, batteries I can buy in any kiosk, if it falls off a wall no big damage.

Viharnik - you don't buy a camera for posting pics on net. Most get it to save a piece of what they experience as memory for themselves. This image documentation (quality level) should be to each one's wish who uses it. Daniel insure it - IT HAPPENS!! Lp

For mountains optical zoom is useful, at least 10x. Usually such cameras are a bit bigger and more expensive and not exactly pocketable. Go to a store with larger selection, weigh them, check and then read tests and forums and decide. I use Nikon D50, satisfied with pics, when I have some € I'll change lenses. It's a bit bigger and sometimes awkward to carry, but weight is offset by praise for good pics. And a question for others: how can I upload pics to forum like davorin and geppo above? Lp, S

My experience is that a light camera is most practical. I use Canon S2 compact 12x optical zoom any settings and idiot mode. But essence is quality, you process photo very simply and quickly in Picasa and they are ready pics for amateur. lp.s

I use Olympus SP550 UZ, and I have to say I won't trade it for any other for now! It has 18x optical zoom, which is very handy in the mountains. And some pics.

I also have compact OLYMPUS SP650UZ and I have to say I'm very satisfied with it. It's great because it has Slovenian menu and is easy to use, I use it everywhere, mostly in mountains. I had it already at -30C degrees.

What settings do you have set when you photograph? Program, vivid colors, it comes out something like the picture below, if vivid colors off, parts of the photo are pale. I have I-contrast function, but it makes too bright when cloudy. AUTO function by turning the dial I don't like at all.

All shots in NEF format, for panoramic stitchings M and manual focus, otherwise A or S, for snow exposure from +0.3 to +0.7. Need to test to slowly find what works best, and of course shoot a lot. As much as possible.
