Notch behind the Castle

Just like Kugy has been looking at Jalovec from below Kukla for years, I too have gazed up under Pelce every spring, admiring the snowfields beneath them and dreaming of how nice it would be to ski them. Today I finally set off. Zvonko gives me some more tips on the route in Trenta, I greet Simon who arrives over Vršič just then and goes to see how Pogačnikov dom fared over winter. In Zapodnu I find a nice new cabin, right behind it forest, and if nothing before, after a few meters a nice path appears leading me to a small promontory and onwards into a wide gully down which a long snow slab has spilled. I walk along the right edge, then go left and straight up the slab as Zvonko advised me this morning. Higher under the Konj wall I find a nice passage right, then left along the indistinct gully up through beech forest, soon reaching extensive snowfields. Here skis go from the backpack of course, I equip them with skins and ski crampons and a nice ascent begins on broad gently sloping snowfields with even nicer views all the way to the Shelter under Špiček. A short break follows, inspection of the shelter, message to Nada that all is well with her "hut" and onwards into the basin under Mali Ozebnik. I persist on skis a while longer, but since part of the snowfields under the Notch is in shade and frozen accordingly I go on foot instead. From the Notch a nice view opens down to Bala and all the way to Bavšica. I go a bit higher where I sit in pleasant sunshine. All familiar mountains visited dozens of times surround me, below vast untouched snow expanses. I ski down, wonderful, some hard snow in between but tens of meters further pure joy again. I ski down to the basin, chamois watch me condescendingly from below the summit of Zelenice. I climb on foot up above Špiček, chamois move towards Mali Ozebnik. I fit skis and zigzag to the valley. It's 11:15 and I couldn't have better snow. I pick the nicest terrain and so all down to that indistinct gully where skis go back on the backpack. Descent not boring at all, constantly looking at Prisojnik and Razor, lower admiring auricula flowers and suddenly, in 45 minutes at the start. Trenta solitary, romantic, beautiful, ski unforgettable.

22.8.2020. From Loška Koritnica over Brežice saddle to the Notch behind the Castle. Quite a few times postponed tour. On Saturday it finally happened. Koritnica valley is beautiful. Solitary. Still we met some hikers. To Brežice saddle the path is somewhat familiar to me from many years ago. Further to the Notch behind the Castle unknown to all four of us. Just there clouds crept in obscuring the views. Protections ok. Last year they renewed the path. Otherwise some twisted pitons probably damaged by rocks. In the gully quite some scree and need to be careful. Met two guys returning from Pelc above Klonice. Continued to Špiček where we overnighted.
sign at the ramp where you leave the vehicle.1
two more hikers went part of the path with us. 2
the morning was clear.3

we go into the forest6

We went a bit wrong here. The arrow is on the rock.8

and lots of water.10
it's clean.11
we continue past the cairn12

everything is marked.14
here we gear up.15
the views are really nice.16
occasional houses can be seen17
we enter the climbing section.18
which is protected.19
but quite demanding.20
nicely routed path.21
didn't cause us trouble.22
definitely better to have protections.23
you never know,24
something might come from above.25
only one cable is somewhat thinner.26
In the upper part.27
for now protections are in good condition.28
we're already high up.29

the slope flattens a bit here31
The path ahead is overgrown.32
but it was hiding.33
from here there is a wonderful view of Jalovec.34
at saddle Brežice35
we rest a little.36
we still have sunshine.37
we are in a new unknown world38
In the notch39
here they renewed the safety gear and pegs last year.40
then clouds engulfed us41
here the world is really different42
there is quite some scree on the path43
therefore carefully onwards.44
In the gully45
signs are on the rocks.46
and descent over scree47
and some walking among boulders48
to the shelter below Špičkom.49

Darinka, path full of praise! What about those twisted pitons at the start of the path on the wet wall and further ordinary aluminum power line wires driven into the scree, unmarked junction to the climbing part and hunter's path under the wall? That was like last year and I don't believe responsible PD Bovec fixed anything...

Thanks, really a great tour. Last year I inquired about the climbing path? And Božo Vidic wrote to me, who helped last year renewing the cables and pitons in the upper part of the path from Brežice saddle to the Notch behind the Castle. That it's ok. This year some pitons twisted due to rocks damaging them. Markings also renewed last year. One brush forgotten under the wall. That power line wire still attached there in the lower part of the climbing path. One part quite overgrown under Brežice saddle. I think PD Bovec takes care of this path. Anyway we had no problems. It's smart to use self-belay set. There could be some more protection at least in the initial descent part from the Notch behind the Castle. Just my opinion.
The path goes through here.1
This is what it looks like.2
In this vertical wall there were some twisted pitons.3

Those twisted pitons in the lower part of the path have been like that for ten or more years and nobody has tried to fix them so far. But they are right in the wet rock area and especially on descent very unpleasant and even dangerous... I mean, they renewed markings to Brežice saddle some three years ago but didn't mark the junction hunter's and climbing path, consequently many instead of over the wall continue on the hunter's path which is much more exposed to falling rocks than the one over the wall. About the overgrowth of the path I wouldn't...

30.7.2021. Notch behind the Castle today without a cloud. In the morning I headed there. When the sun just peeked out. From Špička nice path. I bypassed the snowfields. Then into the scree which is steep. Met only one guy - Martin on the scree. He was early. Came from Koritnica. Headed to Jalovec and maybe Mangart.

Were at Mali Ozebnik and Špička about a month ago, still quite some snow on ascent over the Notch behind the Castle. Little visited summits, therefore all the more beautiful and pristine.

Thanks Marjan. It was an interesting summit for me. And I wasn't alone. Quite a few ibex were resting on the summits.
